Introduction The first key milestone of the Strategic Planning Committee is to redevelop UH Hilo s mission and vision. It is clear from the outcomes of the survey consultation and listening tour that many at the university believe its identity is confused part of that confusion is due to the vision and mission not now accurately reflecting the university s current activities or direction. The job of the is to consider all evidence gathered from the preplanning stage, the quantitative data available on the strategic planning website, outcomes from WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) reviews, and other relevant information, to identify UH Hilo s current situation, purpose, and potential future direction. 2. Work Plan The table below suggests a work plan for the to follow in development of the mission and vision. It builds in time for consultation with stakeholders, endorsement by key leadership and governance bodies, and updating the UH System Board of Regents at their March 17 th 2011 meeting. Notes: This work plan will remain flexible to accommodate unforeseen circumstances. The work plan will be updated with dates of Hanakahi Council meetings when available The plan identifies meetings of key governance and other planning bodies to ensure appropriate consultation and endorsement is sought from these groups. 1

Also bring in outcomes from survey consultation, listening tour companion survey, WASC review outcomes and quantitative data. Consider mission/vision related questions (e.g. who do we serve? what do we do? where do we excel?) Dec 7 th 5 th meeting Focus on identifying core directional points related to mission and vision. The aim is to identify such points and consult on those with stakeholder groups. Dec 8th drafting sub-committee meeting Take the outcomes from the fifth meeting and develop a consultation paper to be issued electronically to stakeholders and form the basis of town-hall discussions. Dec 10 th Congress meeting Ensure Congress are made aware of s initial thinking re: directions from Dec 7 th meeting. Dec 13 th 6 th meeting Approve consultation paper and plans for town-hall discussions Dec 14 th issue online consultation Issue as press release (which will also go through announce ), via Ohana, and push out to advisory committees, alumni and other community groups. Invite campus governance groups Congress, UHHSA and Hanakahi Council to make formal written responses to the consultation.
