US Army Combined Arms Center The Operational Environment Changes in the Character of War Lethal, Contested, Complex Terrain Degraded Operations Adversaries, including super empowered individuals with access to WME, cyber, space and NBC Contested in all domains, increased lethality, enabled by autonomy, robotics and artificial intelligence the potential for overmatch Operations among populations in complex terrain including dense urban areas Trans regional, hybrid strategies regular, irregular, criminal, terrorists attacking our weakness, mitigating our advantage; Systems Warfare, Preclusion, Sanctuary, Isolation and Reflexive Control. Increased speed of human interaction, events and action rapid proliferation of capabilities, constantly co evolving Potential to be Out-gunned, Out-ranged, Out-protected, Outdated, Out of Position Out of Balance 5
Building and Maintaining Readiness to Win in a Complex World BG Maria Gervais DCG, CAC-T 6
US Army Combined Arms Center CTC Modernization & Initiatives The CTC Modernization Program ensures that the Maneuver Combat Training Centers (Mission Command Training Program, National Training Center, Joint Readiness Training Center, and the Joint Multi-National Readiness Center) provide the most realistic training to prepare Brigade Combat Teams, leaders, and Soldiers for Decisive Action Operations supporting Unified Land Operations against a hybrid threat and New Generation Warfare tactics in a multi-domain operational environment. MCTP: Increased UAP participation in a joint environment; integrating CEMA and space; EDRE conditions with multiple DATE scenarios and locations, realistic air-to-air and indirect fire engagements. DIRT CTCs CTC Instrumentation System: Provides real-time objective feedback at all echelons in the form of after actions reviews for Brigade Combat Teams, leaders, and Soldiers performance. Instrumentation IADS Integrated Air Defense System: In process of determining how best to replicate / stimulate IADS at CTCs; low cost emitters, innovative test equipment, etc. in training roles to train Army and Joint Aviation. Opposing Force (OPFOR) Surrogate Vehicles: Provides both track and wheeled near-peer threat vehicles to replicate threat vehicles in a multi-domain operational environment. OSV Cyber Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA): Must be able to replicate / stimulate tactical environment for BCT in degraded Electronic Warfare, Cyber and Space modes. CEMA DUT MBT Dense Urban Terrain (DUT): Expand/thicken urban operations facilities to include DUT sub-section and populations. 7
US Army Combined Arms Center Warfighter Collective Training Capabilities Allow training at the point of need. Units train as they fight, replicating where they will fight. Replicate megacities and multi-domains. Provide multi-echelon and combined arms training. Give commanders full use of Mission Command systems. Improve exercise design and execution. Keep pace with technological changes. Synthetic Training Environment (STE) the Army must look to the future and new, emerging technologies that could change the way soldiers fight even as it 8 continues to build its readiness to fight today. CSA, GEN Milley
US Army Combined Arms Center STE and ST Challenges Ability to generate, update, and distribute global terrain meshes, to include enterable and reducible urban terrain with high fidelity realism (clutter, non-sterile environments) Real-time/concurrent, high speed entity-level interactions with 1,000 25,000 players 1 million+ AI entities with high fidelity, complex behaviors Network support to provide updates at < 30ms latency 9
