1 1 Merit Badge Midway Schedule (First revision/update: 02/01/2017) Preregistration for merit badge class sign-up will close on Monday March 13, 2017 Saturday-March 25, 2017 (Held at the LDS Church, Plummer St. Northridge, CA (corner of Plummer St. & Amestoy Ave) Additional merit badge (MB) classes may be added to this schedule (particularly in the afternoon). Continue to monitor the Balboa Oaks District webpage at: balboaoaks.bsa-la.org as badges, requirements and/or schedules may change. Review all of the following information carefully before preregistering for a class: All Merit Badges marked with an (*) are outdoor & may be CANCELLED if it rains. To successfully sign up to reserve a seat for a merit badge class (called Preregistration) scouts (not a parent or leader) must: (1) the MB counselor for the desired merit badge in the session of their choice to confirm the merit badge pre-requisite requirements and (2) must receive a confirmation back from the MB counselor confirming his preregistration for that MB. (NOTE: youth protection requires the scout to cc a parent or adult leader on any communication with a MB Counselor. Failure to do so will prevent preregistration). Don t wait to register as class space is limited. NOTE: If any scout decides for any reason he is not going to attend a class for which he has registered, he must notify the Merit Badge Counselor and cc: rward4wb@yahoo.com - a failure to do so will trigger future restrictions (which is a bar from preregistering for a Balboa Oaks Midway for the next two midway events). Preregistration ends Monday March 13, 2017 at 9:00 PM. After that date/time any remaining open seats will be filled on a first come first serve basis on the morning of the Midway beginning at 8:00 AM with check-in (follow class schedule updates for closed classes and those with open seats). Current MB class information, i.e. openings & closings, can be found on the Balboa Oaks District website at: balboaoaks.bsa-la.org. There is No Fee charged to attend this Midway. Please read all the special instructions/important information and MB requirements on the pages following the class schedule. Proven Very Popular & Offered again at this Midway is the opportunity for scouts to meet with a counselor for guidance or to review completed merit badge work and have a Blue Card signed (selected merit badges only; see a list of badges following the class schedule and don t wait to make your appointment). NOTE: Scouts should not expect to register for a MB class and meet by appointment with a counselor at the same time the class is in session. Please be considerate of your counselor and his/her time. They are busy so don t panic if it takes them several days to respond to your request to sign-up for a class. They will take your request in the date/time order in which it was received. Please do not double book classes "just in case"... You will be discovered and you may end up cancelling yourself out of all classes. AND, if any scout decides for any reason he is not going to attend a class for which he has already registered, immediately notify the Merit Badge Counselor and cc: rward4wb@yahoo.com. (see Additional Information section for the consequence of failing to make proper notification)

2 2 the Midway Coordinator Ralph Ward at if you have difficulty understanding the schedule of classes, the Midway workings or have other questions. Class Sessions: ***Scouts, you have a responsibility to come to class fully prepared if you expect to earn the badge for which you have registered. Do not forget to bring your Signed Blue Card to class! Additionally, you are responsible for the information in the Merit Badge Book (MBB). Reviewing the MBB prior to doing preparation work and attending class will ensure that you get the most out of these class opportunities. The MBB is a wealth of information that can make earning a merit badge a lot easier. It contains many of the answers and solutions needed or can at least provide direction as to where you can find the answers. NOTE: All classes have as a primary prerequisite requirement: read the Merit Badge book whether or not that reading requirement has been restated in the below class/counselor listed prerequisite requirements. Special Note: COMMUNICATIONS is an all-day class. Cooking will run three sessions (1, 2 & 3 including lunch). New for this midway event: if any scout preregisters for a class and then fails to show for class without giving advance notice of cancellation to the merit badge counselor and midway coordinator (rward4wb@yahoo.com), that scout will be restricted from preregistering at the next two midway events. Be considerate of others; please do not leave the class with an empty seat. For the American Business Merit Badge to be signed off as completed at the midway, the scout must complete the following requirements before class and turn your written reports in class for: #2 a; #4 a; #5 a & b (or a 4-H, FFA or JA project can be used); Additionally, scouts are expected to be prepared to discuss the following requirements in class: #1 a & b; #2 b, c, d & e; #3 a & b; #4 b & c; #6 a, b & c. Do 5 a, b and c; requirements d through h will be done in class. Do 6a, b and c; requirements d through f will be done in class. It is expected that scouts will be creative in meal planning; and remember that this is cooking not heating up premade food. In addition to the above, scouts need to know and discuss five (5) different spices and their effects on food and also know what carmelization is and how it is achieved. Scouts will be cooking several meals and everyone needs to be prepared and participate. See you at the midway. The Fingerprinting Merit Badge requires that a scout come to class with the first three requirements completed (#1-3). Requirements 4 & 5 will be completed in class. It is suggested (not required) that scouts use the Fingerprinting Merit Badge workbook found at to write their notes on for the first three requirements. It is strongly advised that they read the Merit Badge Pamphlet prior to completing requirements one through three as all the answers to the requirements may be found in that Pamphlet. Scouts must "Be Prepared" to discuss those answers with the instructor in class. The First Aid Merit Badge class moves at a rapid pace. It is presumed that any scout attending this class is thoroughly knowledgeable of all first aid class rank requirements. Scouts must also read the First Aid MB book, complete the First Aid Workbook, and bring both the MB book and Workbook to class along with one of three first aid kits listed in the requirements. Merit Badge Counselor Training for adults. The purpose of this training is to provide interested adults and council or district approved and registered merit badge counselors with understanding of the methods of counseling and their role in the advancement program of Boy Scouts of America. The merit badge counselor s role is to bring about learning on the part of the Boy Scout. As a coach, the counselor advises the Scout concerning steps he should take to fulfill the requirements for the merit badge. As a counselor, he evaluates the Scout s performance and determines whether or not the scout has satisfactorily completed the requirements of the merit badge.

6 The Music Merit Badge requires that a scout completes the following prerequisite requirements: 1. Be prepared to play or sing musical selection of your choice. EXTRA CREDIT: Create a one page "personal resume" of yourself that you could use to obtain a job or employment. The requirements for the Pioneering Merit Badge have been recently updated; find the revised requirements at: The most significant change is there are no specific rank achievements required; however if possible, please complete the Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class Knot requirements prior to Midway. Additionally, Requirement #7 has been changed and Scouts no longer have to build a Scale Model. Bring your MB book (not worksheets) to class. Note: to comply with BSA Internet Safety rules, please make sure to always add your parent or a scout leader on your conversations with Merit Badge counselors. The Stamp Collecting Merit Badge requires a $20 fee for materials. In return each scout will receive a notebook, trade tools and stamps valued at $30. Discover more about Lt.
