1 Marine Corps League South St. Louis Detachment 183 The Scoop July 2017 Commandant s Corner: Bob Scannell Greetings to all! July is well upon us and I hope everyone took advantage of the nice days that we had in June and early July. They are the best in a while; however, it s St. Louis and our weather has changed (of course), and it is HOT! July has been busy. We marched in the Fourth of July Webster Groves Parade. We also had a very nice picnic that was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Charlie Dooling, the Ladies Auxiliary, and of course Rick Frazier and Bill Rinehart for cooking and also to all that pitched in to help with the event. Volume 3 Issue 7 Commandants Corner 1 Chaplain s Desk 1 Ladies Auxiliary 2 On June 25 th, our Detachment Color Guard was on the field to represent the Veterans at a Special Cardinal Baseball game. Your Color Guard did us proud. Myself, Eddie Reece, Ed Dodson and Mike Lee. We have many more events coming up and we would ask that you participate and not sit on the sidelines. Please contact me or one of the Officers and sign up to help with one of our events. The Marine Corps Birthday Ball will be here before we know it. We always need extra help. The work is easy and very rewarding. This Month In Marine Corps History Upcoming Events Flag Ceremony At Busch Stadium To all, stay safe and don't let yourselves get too hot outside. Not many of us are 20 years old anymore, and I think that even our members that came back from Afghanistan would challenge us to adjust to this heat. Marine Corps Ball 5 For Your Health 6 Chaplain s Desk: Ken Dieckmann As I reflect on this beautiful summer day I often think about how fortunate we are to live in St. Louis. We have so many diverse activities that we are blessed with for all to enjoy. The Gateway Arch built in 1965; the center final piece was placed while I was in Viet-Nam. Forest Park is such a gem with sprawling public space and a boat house, my wife and I enjoy taking our dogs there for lunch. The St. Louis Zoo is all part of it and also a part of our day with walks thru the wild animal exhibits and a petting zoo that opens the eyes of children so bright and shining. Lord God, Creator of all times and places we thank You for the gift of summertime. Thank You for the beauty that surrounds us everywhere we look: the flowers, the deep blue sky, the surface of lakes, the laughter of children at play. Families and friends gathered at our Marine bar b-q picnic to spend quality time with all our brothers and sisters as well as their children and grandchildren for a day of enjoying our Marine families together. As we open our eyes and ears to the landscape of nature we open to receive our hearts and all the gifts provided. Give us the insight to see You as the Divine artist. Help us to realize and appreciate that You are keeping us all in existence. Warm our souls with the awareness of Your presence. Let all the gifts we enjoy this summer deepen our awareness of Your love. So that we may share this with others and enjoy a summertime of togetherness. Amen. 2 Page 3 LADIES AUXILIARY MISSION: The Marine Corps Auxiliary was formed for the purposes of promoting the interests of the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps League and to protect and advance the welfare of Marines and their dependents. Auxiliary members participate in a wide variety of programs that benefit and preserve the fundamental rights and freedoms of every person of this Nation, young and old. The Scoop Ladies Auxiliary: Carol McCarthy There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. Tuesday, June 27 was a great day! Our Auxiliary had the privilege of hosting a Bar-B-Que for some of our men and women Veterans who have spinal cord injuries. This is one of the many high lights of our year. Every summer we do a traditional Bar-B-Que for lunch at BLDG #52 at Jefferson Barracks. Our Veterans have a chance to eat homemade foods made with love and appreciation by our Auxiliary. We serve and dine with the Veterans. We had a record number of Veterans to serve this year. Our Auxiliary worked like a well-oiled machine. We work as a team. Whether filling each plate with every dish the Veterans want to eat, helping them choose a place at the table of their choice, helping feed some of the Veterans, or engaging them in conversation, our Auxiliary brings love and joy. Marine Bob Jost was our King of the Grill. Marines Bill Frazier, Hal Holmes, Bob Jost and Ed Lyston are always extending a hand of friendship and encouragement to all the Veterans. We appreciate them and their ongoing support.. The Webster Groves 4th of July Parade was so much FUN! It was heartwarming to see every man, woman and child along the parade route show so much RESPECT, JOY and APPRECIATION as Our Marine Color Guard marched into view. The bystanders stood up, clapped, cheered, waved, saluted and many had their right hand over their hearts. The crowd smiled and shouted THANK YOU over and over again! GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS! GOD BLESS OUR AUXILIARY! GOD BLESS AMERICA! Our Detachment Picnic took place Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Watson Trail Park. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. Great location! Great food! Great people! Great bingo! Great raffle! Marine Corporal Jonathan Rode with Grey Eagle donated A FOLDS OF HONOR GOLF BAG and A YETI GRIZZLY COOL- ER for us to Raffle. Thank you Jon, for helping us support our Veterans and their families! Our Auxiliary awarded Scholarship Certificates to Evan Morris and Jack Holmes. We wish them well as they are beginning a new chapter in their life. We pray they make good choices and follow their instincts. Thank you Commandant Bob Scannell and Dave and Delana Winkler for installing a new air conditioner in our Auxiliary Room! We appreciate you! We appreciate how selfless you are! You will be in our thoughts as we gather in our COOL AUXILIARY MEETING ROOM! Thank you very much! At our Auxiliary meeting held on July 11 we had the privilege of meeting Louis Haynes. He was representing Healing Waters. It is a wonderful group helping our Veterans. They teach our Veterans how to make FLYS and teach them how to FLY FISH. We are all on board with finding ways to help our Veterans deal with Anxiety and Stress. Our American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held at the Detachment on Saturday, September 30, This will be our 11th Blood Drive. Because of OUR MARINE CORPS LEAGUE BLOOD DRIVES we have saved 594 LIVES! Be a Hero and Be Selfless. Give the Gift of Life. What a wonderful way to help people and make a difference in our community and our world! THANK YOU!!! You are welcome to join us at our next Auxiliary Meeting, 8 August at 19:00 Hrs July Dinner Meals by the Ladies Auxiliary. Cost $7.00 The dinner bell rings at 1800 hrs. Baked Lasagna, Salad, Garlic Bread (and of course) Dessert!

3 This Month In Marine Corps History 4 July 1801: President Thomas Jefferson reviewed the Marines, led by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, LtCol William W. Burrows and the Marine Band, on the White House grounds. The smartly uniformed Marines performed drills and fired various salutes in observance of the new nation's 25th anniversary. 6 July 1990: One of the oldest and most versatile attack aircraft in Marine Corps history, the A-4 Skyhawk, retired from the Corps' active aviation structure after over 30 years of service. The last two Skyhawks from MAG-32 flew their final flight from Cherry Point to NAS Patuxent River on this date. 7 July 1941: The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Within a year of activation, the Wing would participate in the Marine Corps offensive at Guadalcanal. That bitter campaign would be the first in a series of legendary battles in which the Wing would add luster to its reputation. The 1st MAW would earn five Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry in campaigns spanning World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. 11 July 1798: President John Adams approved "An Act for Establishing and Organizing a Marine Corps", and it became law. The following day, the President appointed William Ward Burrows the Major Commandant of the new Corps. In August, Major Burrows opened his headquarters in Philadelphia, at that time still the capital of the new nation. 14 July 1993: The USS Iwo Jima was decommissioned after over 30 years of service in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The ship was named for the World War II battle during which three Marine divisions ousted 20,000 entrenched Japanese troops. The Iwo Jima was commissioned 26 August 1961, and it was the first ship specifically designed as an amphibious assault ship from the keel up. 18 July 1918: The 4th Brigade of Marines began an attack near Soissons, France, as part of a three-division counterattack against the Germans. In the first two days of battle, the brigade sustained 1,972 casualties. 24 July 1944: The V Amphibious Corps, commanded by Major General Harry Schmidt, landed on Tinian, in the Mariana Islands. The following morning, the 2d and 4th Marine Divisions began a shoulder-to-shoulder southward sweep of the island. Organized enemy resistance faded within a week, and on 1 August, MajGen Schmidt declared the island secure. naval campaigns. 28 July 1918: Brigadier General John A. Lejeune assumed command of the 2d Division, U.S. Army in France, and remained in that capacity until August 1919 when the unit was demobilized. He was the first Marine officer to hold an Army divisional command in combat, and following the Armistice, he led his division in the march into Germany. 8,2288 Honors total Honors Volume 3 Issue 7 Honors and Color Guard: We need members for the Honor Guard. please contact Charlie Dooling at (314) Charles Dooling: Sr. Vice Commandant Upcoming Events 29 July Flag Ceremony at Busch Stadium, 40 Members to hold the Flag on the Terrace August MCL National Convention 30 September Ladies Auxiliary Blood Drive 7 October Trivia Night October Midwest Division Fall Conference 28 October Halloween Costume Party November 242nd Marine Corps Birthday Ball November Toys 4 Tots Collections 2 December Toys For Tots Collection 16 December Christmas Party Page 3 Three Spent Shells, One for Country, One for Duty, One for Honor. They may function as clinical or specialty technicians, medical administrative personnel and health care providers at medical treatment facilities. They also serve as battlefield corpsmen with the Marine Corps, rendering emergency medical treatment to include initial treatment in a combat environment. Don t Bug Me! Common infections carried by summer critters We love summer- except for the sunburn and itching part. Bites by mosquitoes and ticks are very common. While most are just inconveniences, a few are fairly dangerous. Here is a summary of 2 of the dangerous ones and how to avoid them. (for mosquito and additional tick borne illnesses, there is a more comprehensive article at the Detachment) Tick borne illnesses- While there are a wide variety of tick borne infections, the ones most common in our region are Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Tularemia. The tick needs to be imbedded for over 24 hours to transmit the disease- if it does not imbed, or if you remove it in less than 24 hours there is very little risk of becoming infected. These are bacterial (not viral) and therefore need antibiotics to treat them. Doxycycline is generally the best antibiotic for these. All of these infections can cause any combination of flu like symptoms including fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and tiredness. All except Lyme can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Any can potentially cause a rash. However if you develop these symptoms with a recent tick bite, with or without a rash, you should see your doctor immediately. Lyme Disease- while not fatal, Lyme disease is the most common tick borne illness and can have long term complications if not treated. Symptoms can begin 3-30 days after a tick bite. Short term symptoms include the flu like symptoms and possibly a classic rash- the rash looks like a bullseye Over time if untreated, more of these rash spots may appear along with increasing joint, muscle and bone pain. It has the potential to cause nerve problems such as paralysis and nerve pain, and in rare cases can cause inflammation in the heart, eyes and liver. Doxycycline should be started as soon as Lyme is suspected, with or without a rash. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever- carries the highest risk of death of all tick borne illnesses if not treated with doxycycline in the first 5 days of symptoms. Within 2 to 14 days of an infected bite, flu like symptoms can develop (fever can be high, up to 103) along with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. Light sensitivity and paralysis of some nerves are possible. The rash that develops is not itchyit consists of lots of small, flat red spots. It generally starts on hands, wrists and ankles and then spreads to the rest of the body, although a small percentage never develop a rash. The key to tickborne illnesses is prevention. Bug spray with DEET is effective to keep ticks away. While wooded areas are the most prone to high tick populations, 2017 has shown a large number in nontraditional areas- many have been found in urban parks and even backyards. Try to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts, and tuck pant legs into socks if possible. Always check for ticks when you have been outside for any length of time. Remember, if you remove it in less than 24 hours the chance of getting an infection very low. A bite even without transmitting an infection can still be itchy- you can soothe it with hydrocortisone and take an oral antihistamine like Benadryl or Claritin. Applying a cold pack will help with itching as well.
