INTRODUCTION SHOW Slide 1 (STRM) Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio is: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 5 mins Media: Slide Presentation Motivator Terminal Learning Objective Safety Requirements Risk Assessment Level Evaluation Instructional Lead-In Everything in the Army starts with leadership. Without competent leaders the Army cannot be successful in facing the challenges of the current security environment. The Nation and the world look to us to define leadership and provide examples of this application to determine who a leader is and what a leader should know and do. SHOW Slide 2 (Terminal Learning Objective) Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements. At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will: Action: Conditions: Standards: Understand basic concepts of Army leadership In a classroom and garrison environment with access to real-life scenarios Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Army leadership concepts Conduct a safety brief prior to training as needed and IAW unit and installation policies. Low - Risk Assessment to be produced locally IAW FM 5-19, August None Army National Guard leaders today have to be agile, adaptive and multi-skilled at home and around the world. As leaders represent the United States, they may be called upon to act as an ambassador in the morning and a warrior later that afternoon. The ability to learn, think, influence, motivate, adapt and overcome challenges is the crux to achieving the Army s purposes. The Army understands that leadership is the key to success, and strives to develop leaders and leadership skills at all levels. 3

4 SECTION III. PRESENTATION 1. Learning Step / Activity 1. Leadership Defined Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: Slide Presentation a. How do the Army and Army National Guard define leadership? SHOW Slide 3 (Leadership Defined) (1) The ability to influence people by providing purpose, direction and motivation, while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. (2) The Army s strategic objectives clearly state the Army s purpose: provide relevant and ready land power for the 21st century security environment; train and equip Soldiers to serve as warriors and grow as adaptive leaders; sustain an all volunteer force composed of highly competent Soldiers; provide an equally high quality of life; and provide infrastructure and support to enable the force to fulfill its strategic roles and mission. The crux of this strategy is people, more specifically, leaders. These leaders represent the means for the Army to achieve its desired end. b. Army and Army National Guard culture is a product of customs, traditions, ideals, ethos, values and norms of conduct that have existed for more than 230 years. This culture promotes certain norms of conduct, and leaders who manage operations affected by the law of land warfare, require the highest level of individual and organizational discipline and moral values. c. The law of land warfare, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and the standards of conduct structure the discipline imperative to which leaders must adhere. The moral and ethical tenets of the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Army Values characterize the Army s professionalism and culture, and describe the ethical standards expected of all Army leaders. 2. Learning Step / Activity 2. The Army National Guard Leader Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 15 mins Media: Slide Presentation a. Who is the Army National Guard Leader of today? SHOW Slide 4 (Who is the leader of today?) (1) We are all in positions to be leaders. It is not just your duty position or rank that makes you a leader. An Army leader is anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people to accomplish organizational goals. Reinforce that each Soldier can be a leader, and that the Army National Guard encourages and expects Soldiers to work on developing their leadership skills. SHOW Slide 5 (Competent Professionals) (2) Leaders motivate people both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization. 4

5 (3) Army National Guard leaders are knowledgeable professionals who are competent (technically and tactically), full spectrum war-fighters, able to communicate, coordinate, and negotiate with a variety personnel and in ambiguous, dynamic and politically sensitive environments. Discuss what types of leaders, leadership styles and/or techniques, and leadership experiences the Soldiers have already observed since joining the National Guard. (i.e.: RRNCO s RSP Cadre, Drill Instructors, Student Squad Leaders, civilian contractors, Officers, WO s and NCO s. Who displayed different techniques, what were they and why do you think they used that technique in that particular situation? Were you in any leadership positions? What was hardest part of being the leader and what was the most rewarding and why? What are some key traits that you think are important to be a successful leader?) SHOW Slide 6 (Leadership Roles and Techniques) Facilitate this discussion and capture notes or key observations to review later. b. Several years ago, throughout the Army, Soldiers from the combat arms would not have foreseen the need to become adept at detainee or stability operations. Neither would members of the Guard or Reserves anticipate the level and intensity of their deployments. Changes in the threat environment such as the transition from symmetrical to asymmetrical operational areas, may require subordinates to assume responsibility and take initiative for leadership actions not normally designated to his/her position. It is imperative that each Soldier in the Army National Guard strive to develop their leadership skills and abilities. c. As the military shifts focus from conventional warfare to counterinsurgency and stability operations, we must shift our leadership mindset and develop the force accordingly. Leaders must empower subordinates to use their critical thinking skills versus allowing subordinates to become overly dependent on checklists or seeking clear guidance before taking action. Leaders must be willing to take calculated risks and accept the possibility Soldiers may make mistakes. 3. Learning Step / Activity 3. The Soldier s Creed and Army Values Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: Slide Presentation SHOW Slide 7 (Soldier s Creed) a. The Soldier s Creed tells all Soldiers who they should be and what others expect of them. Note that the Warrior Ethos is embedded in the Soldier s Creed. The Warrior Ethos refers to the professional attitude and beliefs that characterize the American Leader and Soldier. It reflects a soldiers and leaders selfless commitment to the Nation, mission, unit and peers. Recite or read the Soldier s Creed aloud for added emphasis and comprehension. SHOW Slide 8 (Warrior Ethos) b. The Warrior Ethos is core to our role as Soldiers. It is the rallying credo that defines what makes a warrior a leader. We saw the Warrior Ethos embedded in the 5

6 Soldiers Creed. I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. SHOW Slide 9 (The Army Values) c. Character matters for all Army leaders. It is who you are inside. The Army is known for leaders of strong character. Sound character will carry you if you don t have some knowledge or know how to do something. Everything done is based on character. Personal beliefs are reinforced through one s character. If you lose your integrity/character you don t have much to fall back on. d. The Army values are enduring as the foundation for Army leadership. Leaders learn them during basic training or pre-commissioning programs. The first initials spell out leadership: LDRSHP: (1) Loyalty Bear true faith and allegiance to the US Constitution, the Army National Guard, your unit, and other Soldiers. This means supporting the military and civilian chain of command, as well as devoting oneself to the welfare of others. (2) Duty Fulfill you obligations. Duty is the legal and moral obligation to do what should be done without being told. (3) Respect Treat people as they should be treated. This is the same as do unto others as you would have done to you. (4) Selfless service Put the welfare of the Nation, the Army, and subordinates before your own. This means putting the welfare of the Nation and accomplishment of the mission ahead of personal desires. (5) Honor Live up to all the Army values. This implies always following your moral compass in any circumstance. (6) Integrity Do what s right legally and morally. This is the thread woven through the fabric of the professional Army ethic. It means honesty, uprightness, the avoidance of deception, and steadfast adherence to standards of behavior. (7) Personal courage Face fear, danger, or adversity (physical or moral). This means being brave under all circumstances (physical or moral). 4. Learning Step / Activity 4. The left hand side of the model shows what leaders today must BE and KNOW. They must have character, presence, and intellect. The Army values are the starting point for building character. Under each of these areas are specific attributes that leaders should possess. b. On the right side of the model are the core leader competencies. They are what a leader does, the actions he or she takes. These show how a leader accomplishes his or her mission by leading, developing, and achieving/getting results. 6
