Individual Highlights: New Hires 2 Promotions 2 Birthdays 3 K-9 4 Safety Tips 5 Deputy of Month 6 Events 8 Events 7 EBRSO formed the FIRST EVER Junior Deputy program in 1948 and the rest of the country has modeled programs after it. The EBRSO group was discontinued in the mid 1980s and has not been in place until this year when Sheriff Sid Gautreaux reinstated the program. The program, which strives to teach children to be civic minded, was called to assist the school after it received substantial damage from Hurricane Gustav. Lt. Don May oversees the program that currently has 35 registered Junior Deputies and is still recruiting. EBRSO accepts Junior Deputies between the ages of 12 and 18. They attend classes that introduce them to numerous Law Enforcement Topics and specialized divisions. The Junior Deputies also participate in a Marksmanship Program where certified Rifle Instructors teach them to shoot properly and safely. Chaplin s Corner: Verses for October If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don t ever trust yourself. In everything you do, put God first, and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success. Proverbs 3:5-6

EBRSO s New K-9 Unit Returns from Training EBRSO s new K-9 unit just returned from their three month training course in North Carolina. Lt. James Cooper and his K-9 Balt, a German Shepard, and Sgt. Shawn Anderson and his K-9 Jeager, a Dutch Shepard, are the first members of the new unit. Both K-9s and their handlers are trained in Tracking, Area Searches, Articles Searches, Criminal Apprehension and Drug Detection. Copper and Anderson both went through a Master Training Course and a Handler s Course. They received certification through the course and both K-9s were certified through the American Working Dog Association. Anderson was also certified as a trainer/decoy. Balt and Jeager are EBRSO s first multi-purpose K-9s. Sheriff Gautreaux hopes to expand the unit soon. Congratulations to both trainers and their K-9s for all the hard work!

Trick-or-Treaters Safety Tips Carry a flashlight Walk, don't run. Stay on Sidewalks Never go into stranger s house Stay in familiar neighborhoods Don t cut across yards or driveways. Make sure costumes don't drag on the ground. Avoid wearing masks while walking Carry only flexible knives, swords or other props. If no sidewalk) walk on the left side of the road Wear reflective clothing or tape Only go to lit houses Avoid strange animals Call Sheriff s Office or police in your area with any suspicious activity in your area. Tips for Parents Come Trick-or-Treat with EBRSO Deputies! Oct. 31 st 5-9 p.m. meet at the BREC Park on Elvin. Deputies Page 7 will of 8 take kids and parents to Old Hermitage Subdivision and escort them for trick-or-treating. There will be hay rides, door prizes and costume contests for the kids. Younger children must be accompanied by adults. We need volunteers from EBRSO to help out. For details contact the Public Information Office at Young children should be accompanied by an adult. If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material. Older children should know where to reach you. Set boundaries for areas to trick-or-treat ahead of time with kids. Inspect candy before your children eat it. Toss out anything with open wrappers or that looks suspect.

Deputy of the Month EBRSO Parish Prison Deputy Elbert Hill was nominated for the Deputy of the Month October at Parish Prison A-Shift Security. Deputy Hill was nominated because his coworkers feel he is an "All Around Deputy" that has worked in almost every position at the prison. They feel that his versatility has been an asset in training new deputies. He has a positive outlook and is always eager to assist. Warden Grimes said Hill is an asset to his team at the Parish Prison. EBRSO To Host Hunter Sight-In East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office will be sponsoring a Hunter s Sight-In for the 2008-hunting season. The sightin sessions will run from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm, beginning October 28 th through November 2 nd at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Firearms Training facility, located at 999 West Irene Road in Zachary. You can just show up or contact the staff at (225) for more information. Ten Ways to Stay Safe This Hunting Season!! 1. Assume That Any Gun, at Any Time, is Loaded. 2. Always Point a Gun in a Safe Direction. 3. Keep Your Finger off the Trigger. 4. Know What You're Shooting at. 5. Be Familiar With Your Gun. 6. Don't Shoot at Hard Surfaces (Including Water). 7. Don't Rely on a Safety Mechanism. 8. Don t Load Your Gun Until You Need to. 9. Use the Right Ammo. 10. Pay Attention!

EBRSO HOSTS STATEWIDE SEX OFFENDER CONFERENCE EBRSO hosted a three day conference this month to generate sex offender awareness, educate units of sex offender laws statewide, and promote a cooperative effort among all law Registering Sex Offenders is one of the most important jobs that law enforcement officials have. - Sheriff Gautreaux Registering sex offenders is one of the most important jobs that law enforcement officials have, Sheriff Gautreaux said. In properly registering child predators we are trying to protect victims and prevent further victimization. Since taking office, Sheriff Gautreaux has more than doubled the size of EBRSO s sex offender registry unit. enforcement agencies in Louisiana. The conference was targeted at those charged with the responsibility of enforcing sex offender and child predator laws. More than 200 attended from jurisdictions across the state, including probation and parole, department of corrections, prosecutors and law enforcement. Some members of the EBRSO Sex Offender Registry Unit at the Conference: Cpl. Patti Freeman, Dy. Crystal Andrews, Lt. Terry Mathis, Sgt. Angela Banta and Capt. Bryan White October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Along with the changing of the seasons, October also brings National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is a health problem that all women, and some men, are at risk for. It is a serious condition that women need to watch for and do monthly breast exams. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Louisiana has a higher than average mortality rate for breast cancer and the second lowest mammography screening utilization in the nation. But there is great hope--early detection saves lives! When breast cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is 96 percent. Please be sure to conduct self-exams and schedule your mammogram.
