8 Michigan Department VFW Auxiliary CHIEF OF STAFF/EXTENSION GUIDE SHEET National Theme: Catch the Dream for Our Veterans Department Theme: Strength and Unity for Our Veterans PROGRAM GOALS Maintain Current Auxiliaries Establish New Auxiliaries What is the Extension program? First, let s look at the word extension. We use the word extension in a lot of ways in our lives. Painters add an extension onto a pole to make it longer so they can reach higher places. A person might add hair extensions to enhance their hair style. Computer programmers can add small software programs, called extensions, which can modify and enhance the functionality of the computer s browser. Notice the overlying theme, extensions make everything better! The VFW Auxiliary Extension Program is here to do just that. As Chief of Staff/Extension Chairman it will be my mission to assist you in any way that I can to help you remain a Healthy Auxiliary, and to look to our bachelor posts to establish new Healthy Auxiliaries!! What are some things we can do to maintain our current Auxiliary? Two words that come to mind are publicity and mentoring. Publicize your Auxiliary activities and programs so that your community will look positively at the VFW and perhaps have an interest in joining you in your mission. When you speak to potential members let them know there is something for everyone in the VFW Auxiliary. Discuss our programs and how they can get involved. With the addition of male members in the VFW Auxiliary we have seen new life and vitality in our organization. Now is the time to let our communities know what we do for our veterans, their families, and the children in our neighborhoods. When you speak to members, mentor them and encourage them to get more involved. Really listen and assist them in finding something they can do to enjoy themselves and feel needed. In the National Program Book, National Chief of Staff/Extension Ambassador, Jane Ziebarth states, I believe mentoring is vital to the health and success of our organization, today, tomorrow and in the future. How can we help bring in new VFW Auxiliaries? One easy way we can help is to talk to VFW Posts without VFW Auxiliaries and encourage them to start one. Let them know what an asset the VFW Auxiliary is and how we support our Posts and veterans.
