3 Introduction As a Parent, welcome to the Duluth High School Navy Junior ROTC program! This Unit was Chartered in 1993 with XX Cadets. During the school year, we anticipate that XX Cadets will participate in our program. As a parent, we invite you to become an active participant in the Unit. Parent involvement can mean many things. The purpose of this handbook is to introduce you to the NJROTC Unit and inform you of the many ways that you, as a parent, can be a vital part of this Unit. During the course of this school year, your Cadet will be involved in many activities within Duluth High School, our community, county, state, and neighboring states.

4 NJROTC Mission Statement The Purpose of NJROTC is: Promote Patriotism Develop informed and responsible citizens. Promote habits of orderliness and precision. Develop a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, and self-discipline, and leadership. Promote an understanding of the basic elements and requirement for national security. Develop respect for and an understanding of the need for constituted authority in a democratic society.

6 Cadet Activity Groups Duluth NJROTC provides many opportunities for Cadets to participate. Cadets selected to participate on Special Teams have demonstrated their commitment to the success of the NJROTC program. They have qualified according to Duluth High School and NJROTC guidelines. These Cadets practice hard to enjoy the competition and triumph of Victory! DRILL TEAMS: Armed Platoon Basic: Team marches using various movements and formations using the NJROTC rifle Some movements are relatively easy while a few are difficult Team designed for Cadets who are new to ROTC or who may not be ready for Exhibition Teams Performed with verbal commands Unarmed Platoon Basic: Team marches in various movements and formations without using the NJROTC rifle These movements are relatively easy Team designed for Cadets who are new to ROTC or who may not be ready for Exhibition Teams Performed with verbal commands Unarmed Platoon Exhibition: Consists of stationary / marching drill movements Consists of unique movements All performed without verbal commands Cadets are the some of the best in the Unit Armed Platoon Exhibition: Consists of stationary / marching drill movements Consists of rifle maneuvers that are to be considered as tricky and well-practiced Performed without verbal commands Cadets on this team are the best and most experienced in the Unit Color Guard Teams: Consists of two teams four cadets each Each team consist of 2 color bearers and 2 rifle bearers Cadets have the privilege of carrying and presenting our flags at various events (parades, athletic events, community events, special occasions, etc.) Cadets perform various drill movements during the presenting of the colors Cadets on these teams represent our Country, NJROTC Unit, school and community when performing Cadets are dedicated to their responsibility to the Flags

7 Cadet Activity Groups (continued) Rifle Teams: Team members participate in NJROTC Shooting Sports compete at area, regional, and state rifle meets Team members also participate in non-njrotc Shooting Sports events throughout the school year Marksmanship is a Varsity Sport Marksmanship is recognized by the Georgia High School Association Safety is the primary focus in Rifle training and competition Walther Precision Air Rifle Team: Team consists of the best and most experienced shooters with the Unit Team members are dedicated to the NJROTC and other Shooting Programs as set forth by the Unit Team members participate in various shooting sports events with other schools in the county as well as NJROTC competitions within Georgia and neighboring states Team members undergo and maintain strict safety training and guidelines while practicing and participating in practices and / or competitions Team members are responsible for their equipment while practicing and participating in competitions Avanti Air Rifle Team: Team members consist of Cadets who are not experienced shooters or who may not be ready for the Walther Precision Air Rifle Team Team members consist of Cadets who express and exhibit a dedicated desire to participate in NJROTC and other Shooting programs Team members are dedicated to the NJROTC and other Shooting Programs as set forth by the Unit Team members participate in various shooting sports events with other schools in the county as well as NJROTC competitions within Georgia and neighboring states Team members undergo and maintain strict safety training and guidelines while practicing and participating in practices and / or competitions Team members are responsible for their equipment while practicing and participating in competitions

8 Cadet Activity Groups (continued) Orienteering Team: Competitive form of land navigation Cadets use map and compass to navigate between various checkpoints Cadets utilize an accurate, detailed map and lensatic compass to find points while on the orienteering course Cadets compete in NJROTC competitions with other Units Academic Team: Cadets on the Academic team complete in local, regional and national Academic competitions Teams consist of 4 10 members Each team member will answer exam questions from the Naval Science Curriculum Cadets selected for this Team have demonstrated outstanding Academic skills and grades Cadets must maintain a personal GPA of XX to participate in the Academic Team Athletic Team: Cadets compete in physical fitness events at Drill Meets Events include: Push-ups Sit-ups 1-mile run Relay Events Other events as determined by the Drill Meet requirements Cadets selected for this Team have demonstrated outstanding athletic ability and dedication to physical training Team will train with Orienteering Team

31 Coordinator Responsibilities Fundraising RESEARCH THESE IDEAS FOR OTHER FUNDRAISERS: Patricia Spirit Wear embroidered bags like Chesney s City of Duluth Freedom Fest - craft & fun festival like BB Harris or Mason did at the Town Green call to get details; or: highly visible parking lots (Blockbuster / Cedar Creek, etc.) We can rent out spaces to others crafts, etc. We can have our Canteen sell Y-Ties, Bags, etc. ESTABLISH ACCOUNT AT RECYCLING BANK have each Cadet responsible for their own accounts (taking things to the center getting businesses to donate their cans, etc.) MAKE THIS A CONTEST! SPAGHETTI DINNER & ENTERTAINMENT: Check with Cafeteria lady regarding use of Café for Spaghetti dinner (donations for Silent Auction rolling auction) Krispy Kreme possibilities and profit.call / check website BOX TOPS / SOUP LABELS MAKE THIS A CONTEST! Do not schedule on a night when there is a Home football game Book the Big Ballroom (Ballroom A ). The small Ballroom only holds approximately 80 people and is not really workable for the Unit Sports Banquet package works best for the Unit There is a drastic price-difference between Friday and Saturday night events at Winfield Hall A deposit of approximately $ will be required at the time of the booking. The microphone and podium is available for a small charge from the Hall Reservation Sales / pricing: Begin selling reservations early to avoid financial conflicts with Cadets XX per Cadet ($5.00 more than per person cost) XX per couple Deadline for reservation sales at lower price is: After XX date, only single tickets ($5.00 higher) will be available Keep accurate listing (see example) of sales Reservation list will be given to Parent Chaperone the day of the event to take to Winfield Hall Music Audition or interview several DJ s Make sure they understand the quality of music to be played during the event Check prices, services, insurance, times, etc. What is expected of the DJ

40 Event Timeline / Guidelines Coordinator Responsibilities Winter Navy Ball Media Presentation The Media Coordinator and Cadet will work together to create a slideshow to be shown at Winfield Hall during the pre-ceremony. Have Gunny check out the LCD projector to take to the Hall the afternoon of the ball Things to Do: Order wrist bands from Office Depot (have Gunny order through school) Secure Parent Chaperones to maintain sign-in table to allow Cadets to participate in event Determine which Cadets (usually only a few) will need a Vegetarian meal The week of the event, contact Winfield Hall to see what time we can have access to the Ballroom for decorating Find tiara's and crowns for royalties announced at event POW / MIA Table Setting Ceremony Chaperone Responsibilities: Specials: Guest speaker will be determined by the Commander / Unit Send invitations to: Pat Blenke Mayor Lasseter American Legion Contact Commander & Mrs. Salley Decorations: Winfield Hall provides: White table Covers Choice of linen napkin colors Hurricane globes & candles Square mirror base for globes Silk rose petals to go around globes Podium / microphone ($50.00 charge) No glitter / no confetti to be used

Responsible for: Securing location (unit or cafeteria) Pot-luck list (call parents) Tables Ice, drinks, etc. Games / activities White elephant gift exchange for fun

42 Coordinator Responsibilities End-of-Year Picnic Event Description: The End-of-the-Year Picnic is scheduled in May as a Cadet fun-day. Event is usually held at the Baseball Field Use of the Concession Stand is usually available Parents are in charge of the food and keeping the Concession Stand secure during event (no Athletic Department items are to be used) Parents are also responsible to secure the Concession Stand once the event is finished Responsible for: Securing volunteers to assist with Picnic

46 POW / MIA Table Setting Ceremony Script Narrator 1: As you entered the banquet hall this evening, you may have noticed a small table in a place of honor. It is set for one. This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst. They are commonly called POWs or MIAs, we call them "Brothers." They are unable to be with us this evening and so we remember them. This Table set for one is small:symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his oppressors. Remember! The Tablecloth is white: Symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their country's call to arms. Remember! The single Red Rose displayed in a vase reminds us of the families and loved ones of our comrades-in-arms who keep the faith awaiting their return. Remember! The Red Ribbon tied so prominently on the vase is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn upon the lapel and breasts of thousands who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing. Remember! The Candle: the candle is lit: Symbolizing the upward reach of their unconquerable spirit. Remember! The Bible: The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. Remember! A Slice of Lemon is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate. Remember! There is Salt upon the bread plate: Symbolic of the families tears as they wait. Remember! The Glass is inverted: They cannot toast with us this night. Remember! The Chair: The chair is empty. They are not here. Remember! Remember! All of you who served with them and called them comrades, who depended upon their might and aid, and relied upon them, for surely, they have not forsaken you. Remember! Remember! 51 Individual Parent Responsibilities As a Parent, we recommend the following responsibilities to assure that your Cadet has a successful year: 1. Uniform(s): Standard Uniform Days: Please make sure your Cadet has a clean, pressed uniform on Standard uniform days, which are Thursdays unless advised by the Unit. Summer dress will be until XXX. Winter Dress will be effective from XX to XX. Summer dress will resume on XX. 2. Uniform EVENTS: The Unit will advise the Cadet of the Uniform to be worn for specific events 3. Transportation: Please make sure that your Cadet has timely transportation to and from Unit events. The Unit runs on a strict time schedule, especially when a travel event is planned. It is essential that the Cadet arrive at the designated time so departure times may be kept. This includes rides home from after-school activities. 4. Supplies: Your Cadet will need specific supplies for various events and activities throughout the school year. Please assure that these are available. 5. Calendar: Please keep a copy of the calendar available to coordinate family events, church, school, etc. 6. Communication: Please feel free to call anyone on the Parent Contact list if you have any questions, concerns, or need assistance with anything in regards to NJROTC. If a Cadet is scheduled to participate in an event and emergency arises, please utilize the phone list to contact the Unit Commander and Gunnery Sergeant prior to the departure time of the Unit. This call will alert the Unit that the Cadet is unable to attend and will allow for substitutes to prepare and participate in the event. 7. Telephone Numbers: Please make sure that the Unit and the Parent Support Group has current and emergency telephone numbers. The Unit has a Telephone Tree which is utilized by Instructors, Cadet Officers and the Parent Support Group. 8. Both groups need this information to provide you, as a parent, important and timely information. 9. School Attendance / Behavior: Your Cadet reflects the Unit in his / her every action.
