FORT POINT, SAN FRANCISCO, CA.: A HUGE SUCCESS, COVERAGE ON PAGE TWO & FOUR. Fort Point was a major success this year, Close to 150 Union re-enactor s showed for the two day event. The hourly event schedule was completed from the Flag raising to Flag lowering ceremonies. There was a huge public turn out and the weather was clear sky s, Alcatraz island and the City of San Francisco was clear to the vision. The temperature was cool, with hardly no wind factor until 2:30 pm where winds picked up and it did become a bit chilly. Sunday, Feb 1st, most re-enactors participated on Saturday, so the following day, the reenactor count was estimated to

C O O K S C O R N E R : GREEN TURTLE SOUP,, 2-lb. green turtle meet, 2-QT Water, 3 eggs (hard boiled), ¼ whole Lemon, 1 gill Sherry Wine. Two pounds of turtle add two quarts of water, put to boil on a slow fire and cook down to three pints. Season while boiling with pepper & salt to taste. Take three hard boiled eggs, slice very thin and lay in tureen: slice one fourth of a lemon and put in tureen also. Then pour in tureen one gill of Sherry Wine. Then pour hot soup and send it to the Table. Quantity for a dozen guests. Saloon Solutions: Stone Fence : 1 wine glass [ about ¾ c.] Bourbon Whiskey. Sweet Cider, - Add the whiskey and two or three lumps of ice to a large bar glass. Fill up the glass with the sweet cider and serve. 3

January 31 st 2009: The Photo below is the personnel participating in the Installation ceremony that occurred at estimated 2:30 pm on the lower south-west floor of the old fort. Department Commander Jerry Sayre, performed the ceremony and authorized personnel to install the officer s who could not make the Fort Point event at their next camp meeting. SAN JUAN BAUTISTA, CA., February 7 th, 2009 : Lincoln 10 s GRO-Surgeon Colonel: Don Fuselier deployed his Hospital/Medical tent on the turf in the center of San Juan Bautista s Historic plaza & participated in their 19 th Living History Day. Don reported that the weather at that event was also clear sky s & with a good public turn out. SALINAS-MONTEREY, CA., February 12 th, 2009 : To celebrate President Abraham Lincoln s 200 th Birthday, Lincoln 10 s S&T: Tim Reese, wore his 8 th Calif. Inf. SVR uniform to work & delivering Valentine flowers for Swenson & Silacci to the General public in the Salinas Valley & the Monterey Peninsula. 4

7 Marvin McPherson Shaw: was born in Superior, Nebraska, on July 21 st, 1930, he was a farm boy that grew up in Nebraska attending small local schools while working on the family farm. Brother Shaw graduated from High school about 1949 and during the Korean War, joined the United States Navy. Brother Shaw was trained as a Hospital corpsman and later served with the Marine corps as a corpsman, during his 8 year service he married his wife Jennette who was a nurse from Santa Cruz. Marvin Shaw left service after his enlistment expired, he and his wife & two daughters moved to Santa Cruz, where he worked for Lone Star Cement - Plantronic s and as a landscaper/gardner in Los Gatos. During his working years, he remained active in the Naval reserve and retired after 20plus years as a Hospital corpsman 1 st class. Brother Shaw joined the American Legion in the early 1990 s and served in most offices including about 6 years as its commander in Santa Cruz. Brother Shaw served as a Officer for the United Veterans Counsel. At the time of his death he was serving as Adjutant for American Legion Post # 64. Marvin Shaw promoted actively in programs involving Junior High and High Schools, the Flag Program for the local Elks Lodge, Participating in Parades and other Patriotic events, and participated devoutly to the 4 Chaplain Services at Fort Ord and the 194 Tank Battalion Memorial in Salinas. Brother Shaw cam from a long tradition of family Military service stretching back to the Revolutionary War. He was active in the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, his Civil War Ancestor was: Captain Columbus D. Dillen, enlisted as a Private in Company G of the 7 th Iowa Infantry in 1861 and was discharged with the rank of Captain in Brother Marvin Shaw was attached to Camp Abraham Lincoln 10 in 2002, served one year as Junior Vice Commander, and 4 years as Patriotic Instructor. He was a devoted in his participation at the Flag Ceremonies at the Memorial Day Ceremonies at Evergreen Cemetery in Santa Cruz. He indeed participated at the 2008 Memorial Day event at the cemetery, months later he succumbed to a stroke, and his condition became worse and passed away on November 29 th, His presence will be missed. 7
