In 2016, the Michigan State University Police Department accomplished objectives to further enhance the safety of Michigan State University campus. 6 Page : A YEAR IN REVIEW The Uniform Division participated in a comprehensive safety campaign to promote harmony in mobility. Through social and print media, public interaction, enforcement and partnerships, the Move Safe campaign focused on educating our community how to move safely on MSU roadways, bike paths and sidewalks. Members of the Support Services Division completed more than 20 emergency plans consisting of more than 1,500 pages to pursue university accreditation from the Emergency Management Accreditation Program in Within the Investigative Division, officers were added to the Special Victims Unit, Behavioral Threat Assessment Unit and the Digital Forensics and Cyber Crimes Unit. The Special Events Unit transitioned event scheduling for civilian employees to a new web-based portal that will allow direct event management for payroll and invoicing, which substantially reduces hours spent in administrative duties. The Digital Forensics and Cyber Crime Unit received international attention after successfully gaining access to a fingerprint locked phone to assist with a homicide investigation. The Digital Forensics and Cyber Crime Unit received assistance by researchers at MSU Department of Computer Science and Engineering to develop a 2D fingerprint. The Support Services Division obtained a meteorologist s on-site presence at all home football games for weather monitoring and live-time updates in the event an evacuation or seek shelter order is needed. In 2016, the Administrative Services Unit was able to follow through with a plan of consolidating training class information, training certificates, and employee involvement into one system, which is SRMS.

7 Page : A YEAR IN REVIEW Investigative Division Lieutenant completed the FBI Police Executive Fellowship Program in the Cyber Division making Michigan State University Police Department the first University police department to participate and complete the program. The Uniform Division participated in 78 community outreach activities and 67 crime and safety presentations during In addition to these activities, the division focused on building positive relationships with the HEP/CAMP program, Neighborhood Partner and CORE Team groups, RA s, Athletics and employee groups such as the Physical Plant. Cora, a Vapor Wake canine, was added to the Canine Unit. Currently, Cora is one of four Vapor Wake trailing dogs in the state. Officer Adam Atkinson attended three months of training in Alabama to become certified with Cora, the department s second Labrador Retriever. Canine Cora was utilized at several football games as well as the Silver Bell s in the City parade in Lansing. The Investigative Division created a Communications and Digital Strategist full-time position to focus on the department s brand and internal and external communications. The Fire Marshal Unit created safety training that is disseminated and acknowledged before each Fall Semester on fire safety and evacuation procedures for all instructional staff. Three members of the Regional Crash Investigation Team became certified users with the FARO X 330 3d mapping equipment. This was used to assist the Crime Scene Investigation Unit on four investigations and also on many crash scenes. Officers were trained on FARO s newest accident software, FARO Reality in October of A Racial Healing Conference for the MSU community was held that 85 people attended. Approximately 230 Officers attended a Bias Awareness Forum from MSUPD and the surrounding community.
