Naval Command Campaign Hunt for Red October Based on the novel by Tom Clancy Introduction This campaign guide allows players to play engagements inspired by the novel and the movie The Hunt for Red October. The guide contains a number of scenes from the novel re-created for use with the Naval Command rules. The Red October Modified Typhoon Class Submarine Captain Marko Ramius Modified Typhoon Class Submarine [1981] FP: 9 Max Speed 4/8 EW 6+ Damage Levels 4/5/6 Missile Defence - Target 5+ UEW 8+ Damage Control 7+ Air Defence 8+/1 Special Features: ASW Weapon Range CS Damage Ammo Sturgeon Missile N 20/9 Torpedoes /12

Special Rules Experienced Captain The Red October s Captain Marko Ramius has years of experience, he is one of the Soviet Union s most highly regarded and trusted submarine commander. This experience and knowledge allows the submarine to re-roll one failed dice roll per turn. Caterpillar Drive The Red October is fitted with a revolutionary magnetohydrodynamic drive known as the caterpillar. This propels the vessel through water using only electric and magnetic fields. The drive has no moving parts therefore making the submarine almost impossible to detect with sonar. The caterpillar drive must be switched off in order to fire weapons and to surface. When the drive is engaged the Red October s UEW score increases to 9+ USS Dallas Los Angeles Class Submarine Commander Bart Mancuso Los Angeles Class Submarine FP: 4 Max Speed 5/8 EW 6+ Damage Levels 1/2/3 Missile Defence - Target 7+ UEW 6+ Damage Control 7+ Air Defence - Special Features: ASW Weapon Range CS Damage Ammo Harpoon SSM /16 Tomahawk Missile (Land Attack) /16 Torpedoes /16 Special Rules Expert Sonar Operator The USS Dallas sonar operator Petty Officer Jones or Jonesy as he is known to the crew is one of the most talented Sonar operators in the US fleet. The USS Dallas receives a +1 bonus to all detection rolls using Sonar.

V.K. Knovalov Alfa Class Submarine Captain Viktor Tupolov Alfa Class Submarine [1977] FP: 5 Max Speed 5/9 EW 6+ Damage Levels 1/2/3 Missile Defence - Target 7+ UEW 7+ Damage Control 7+ Air Defence - Special Features: ASW Weapon Range CS Damage Ammo Torpedoes /16 Special Rules Expert Training The Knovalov s captain was trained by none other than Marko Ramius. He benefits from the immense expertise passed to him by his former teacher. This training allows the submarine to re-roll one failed dice roll per turn. Aggression Although expertly trained, Captain Tupolov is hot-headed and aggressive. The Knovalov must fire its torpedoes at any viable target that comes within 12cm.

Scenario: Escape into the Atlantic The Red October has departed for its maiden voyage and is sailing through the Barents Sea bound for the open waters of the North Atlantic. Soviet high command has received a personal letter from Captain Ramius informing them of his intention to defect. The whole Soviet Navy has put to sea to apprehend him. Captain Ramius Red October (Typhoon Class) Soviet Fleet The Soviet Fleet is chosen from the Russian fleet lists in the Naval Command core rules. 15 Fleet Points are available to spend. Battle Area and Deployment Ships are deployed as blinds. The soviet fleet deploys first in a 20cm deep area at one end of the table while the Red October deploys anywhere within a 20cm deep area at the other end. EXIT Soviet Navy Red October Red October Victory Conditions The Red October must safely evade the Soviet ships and exit the battle area at the edge of the table within 10 turns. Soviet Victory Conditions The Soviet Fleet must cripple or sink the Red October within 10 turns. Soviet ASW Rocket

NATO Fleet EXIT Scenario: The Hunt (NATO) The Red October has broken out into the Atlantic. NATO has no idea whether the ship intendeds to defect or launch a nuclear strike on the US mainland. The US and NATO fleets have been given orders to intercept and sink the sub. Captain Ramius Red October (Typhoon Class) Nato Fleet USS Dallas (Los Angeles Class) The remainder of the NATO Fleet is chosen from the US and British fleet lists in the Naval Command core rules. 15 Fleet Points are available to spend. Battle Area and Deployment Ships are deployed as blinds. The NATO fleet deploys first in a 20cm deep area at one end of the table followed by the USS Dallas that deploys anywhere in the area that is not within 12cm of another vessel. The Red October then deploys anywhere in the area that is not within 12cm of another vessel. Red October USS Dallas Red October Victory Conditions The Red October must safely evade the Soviet ships and exit the battle area at the edge of the table within 10 turns. NATO Victory Conditions The NATO Fleet must cripple or sink the Red October within 10 turns. A US Anti-Submarine Frigate

EXIT Soviet Fleet Scenario: The Hunt (Soviet) The Red October has broken out into the Atlantic. With the knowledge that the captain intends to defect the Kremlin orders that the submarine must be found and destroyed. The Soviet fleet therefore has been given orders to intercept and sink the sub. Captain Ramius Red October (Typhoon Class) Soviet Fleet The Soviet Fleet is chosen from the Russian fleet lists in the Naval Command core rules. 20 Fleet Points are available to spend. Battle Area and Deployment Ships are deployed as blinds. The Soviet fleet deploys first in a 20cm deep area at one end of the table. The Red October then deploys anywhere in the area that is not within 12cm of another vessel. Red October Red October Victory Conditions The Red October must safely evade the Soviet ships and exit the battle area at the edge of the table within 10 turns. Soviet Victory Conditions The Soviet Fleet must cripple or sink the Red October within 10 turns. Soviet Kara Class Cruiser

The NATO fleet (Including Red October deploys first in a 20cm square area at the center of the table. The Knovalov then deploys anywhere in the area that is not within 12cm of another vessel. Knovalov NATO Fleet Special Rules Captain Ramius does not receive his Experienced Captain special rule as during the battle he is attacked by a crew member loyal to the Soviet Union who has remained hidden onboard the Red October. NATO and Red October Victory Conditions The Red October must survive for 10 turns. Soviet Victory Conditions The Soviets must cripple or sink the Red October within 10 turns.
