Volunteers from the Boy Scouts, CERT, Civil Air Patrol and TEXSAR joined together to educate themselves for service within the community when emergencies arise and emergency medical help is delayed. 3 FORT BEND COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS PAGE Community Preparedness in Fort Bend began the New Year right with its January Disaster Drill. CERT members polished old skills and learned new ones preparing for the annual CERT Rodeo coming in February. A primary focus was team building and incident management skills coupled with rescue and response. Responders then focused on tactical awareness and squad dynamics while practicing crew resource management. The American Red Cross CPR/AED training course allows students to learn how and when to use an automated external defibrillator. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions with breaths to help preserve brain function until help arrives for persons in cardiac arrest. AED (automatic external defibrillation) For each minute that defibrillation is delayed, the chance of the patient s survival is reduced by approximately 10%.

7 FORT BEND COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS PAGE 7 Fort Bend County Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Preparedness (PHP) program and the Harris County Public Health Emergency Preparedness program are training together, preparing our region in the event of a mass casualty radiation emergency. Before, during, and after a radiological and/or nuclear disaster, public health professionals play a crucial role in population monitoring, a procedure for theoretically persons exposed or contaminated with radioactive material that requires both calculating effects and assessing patient conditions. Community Reception Centers (CRCs) is where this this monitoring takes place. This cooperative program, long in the planning stages, began joint training sessions this January to distinguish, circumvent, warn, and advise both the public and shareholder organizations of protective and therapeutic actions.
