2016 JROTC Semester Final Review Mission Of Army JROTC The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. You are the focus of Army JROTC s mission. In fact, you are the whole point of Army JROTC it is devoted to your growth, both as a student and as a person. This program is a cooperative effort on the part of the Army and the host institution to give you an opportunity for total development and improve yourself in many ways. National Defense Act Enacted in 1916, this act officially created the Reserve Officers Training Corp of which Junior ROTC is a part. Leadership education and training goals are for cadets to: Graduate from high school. Be good citizens by knowing and exercising the rights, responsibilities, privileges, and freedoms of good citizenship. I am an Army Junior ROTC Cadet. Cadet Creed I will always conduct myself to bring credit to my family, country, school and the Corps of Cadets. I am loyal and patriotic. I am the future of the United States of America. I do not lie, cheat or steal and will always be accountable for my actions and deeds. I will always practice good citizenship and patriotism. I will work hard to improve my mind and strengthen my body. I will seek the mantle of leadership and stand prepared to uphold the Constitution and the American way of life. May God grant me the strength to always live by this creed. Hooah!

Battalion Commander (Cadet Lieutenant Colonel) This position is the most demanding in a cadet battalion. The instructor staff selects the cadet for this position based on demonstrated leadership ability and academic standing. The appointed cadet must be able to apply common sense and judgment in the solving of problems that affect the entire cadet corps. Responsible for all the battalion does or fails to do The Battalion Coordinating Staff Officers are divided into five different categories. 1. Battalion Adjutant (S-1) The battalion adjutant is the administrative assistant to the battalion commander. The adjutant is also responsible for performing other administrative duties as assigned by the battalion commander, battalion executive officer, or the instructor staff. 2. Battalion Intelligence or Security Officer (S-2) The battalion S-2 assists the battalion commander and the instructor staff in matters pertaining to unit security and enforces the provisions of the security requirements for the battalion. 3. Battalion Operations and Training Officer (S-3) The battalion S-3 assists the battalion commander in the preparation, conduct, and supervision of all training activities of the cadet battalion. Additionally, the S-3 keeps the commander advised on the progress of training within the battalion. 4. Battalion Logistics or Supply Officer (S-4) The battalion logistics or supply officer is responsible for the maintenance, security, record keeping, issue, and turn-in of all U.S. government property (except ordnance). The S-4 coordinates the securing of property with the S Battalion Public Affairs Officer (S-5) This officer acts as the contact between the corps of cadets and all news media and student publications. This officer publicizes as many of the activities of the Army JROTC program as possible to create an outstanding image of the cadet battalion and to reinforce the image of the school. Battalion Command Sergeant Major (CSM) The battalion command sergeant major is the principal cadet enlisted assistant to the battalion commander. As the senior enlisted member of the cadet corps, the command sergeant major supervises the other noncommissioned officers (NCOs) of the battalion and companies. Signs of Success White Blue Yellow MERIT UNIT HONOR UNIT HONOR UNIT WITH DISTINCTION
The Stars and Stripes The stars represent the states collectively, not individually. The colors used in the flag are white for hope, purity, and innocence; red for hardiness and valor; and blue (the color of heaven) for reverence to God, loyalty, vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The stripes would represent the first 13 colonies, and the nation would continue to add a star for each state that joined the United States. The Union is the emblem on the flag symbolizing unity such as the blue rectangle and stars on the flag of the United States. The branches of the military service use different names for the flag. These names include Color (or Colors ), standard, or ensign; however, the term flag is correct regardless of size or use. The three most commonly displayed flags at state and federal government buildings and on military installations are the garrison, post, and storm flags. The garrison flag is 20 feet by 38 feet. Government buildings and military installations fly this flag on all national holidays and for special occasions, such as for special days or events proclaimed by the President. The post flag is 10 feet by 19 feet; it is for general display on days when it is not appropriate for the garrison flag. The storm flag is 5 feet by 9-1/2 feet. State and federal governments fly this flag only during stormy or windy weather. Leadership Defined Leadership is the ability to influence others to accomplish a mission in the manner desired by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. purpose something set up as an object or end to be attained. direction an explicit instruction. motivation provides a need or a purpose which causes a person to want to do something. Sexual Harassment / Assault Some types of sexual harassment that are happening in schools across the nation include: Inappropriate comments, jokes, gestures, or looks Sexual pictures, photographs, illustrations, messages, or notes Sexual messages/graffiti about someone on bathroom walls, in locker rooms, and so on Sexual rumors about someone Calling students gay or lesbian Spying on students in dressing rooms or showers Flashing or mooning others Touching, grabbing, or pinching others in a sexual way Pulling at clothing in a sexual way Intentionally brushing against someone in an inappropriate way Pulling someone s clothing off or down Blocking someone s way or cornering him or her in a sexual way Forcing someone to kiss you Forcing someone to do something sexual, other than kissing
Anger Management learning to control and manage the emotion of anger; managing your anger so it comes out in a healthy and constructive way. Assertion the ability to clearly communicate personal thoughts and feelings Empathy the ability to accurately understand and constructively respond to the expressed feelings, thought, behaviors, and needs of others. Cadet Etiquette Etiquette is a code of behavior or courtesy based on rules of a polite society. Manners are socially correct ways of acting as shown in prevalent customs. Manners are based on kindness, respect, thoughtfulness, and consideration. Good manners are timeless, whereas the rules of etiquette may vary with the changing times. Monopolize to take exclusive ownership or control Toasting The custom of toasting is universal. It is a simple courtesy to the person being honored. It is not proper to drain the glass at the completion of each toast; therefore, know how many toasts are being given so that you will know how much to drink with each toast. It is also not proper to raise an empty glass to make a toast. Toasts are made standing up. One person will present the toast by saying, Ladies and Gentlemen, the president of the United States or Ladies and Gentlemen, I propose a toast to the president of the United States. All will then raise their glasses and say the president or to the president, respectively. Nutrition- You are what you eat. The building blocks of protein are the amino acids. These chains of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen linked together in different ways control all of the body s chemical activities. Water soluble vitamin a vitamin that is dissolved in the water of tissues Referenced Daily Intake (RDI) standards developed by the U.S. government for the regulation of vitamin and mineral requirements Saturated fats fats that do not melt at room temperature and can raise the blood cholesterol level Water - About 60 to 70 percent of your body is water, with most of your blood, brain, and muscles being water and even 20 percent of your bones. Use & Effect of Drugs, Alcohol, and Substances Alcohol Alcohol, which is legal for those 21 years of age and older, is the most widely consumed and abused drug in the United States. It is socially acceptable in our society for adults to drink in moderation. In excess, however, alcohol is a dangerous drug. Drinking and driving remains the number one cause of death among high school students. Liver Damage Alcohol interferes with the liver s ability to break down fats. As a result of heavy drinking, the liver begins to fill with fat. The excess fat blocks the flow of blood in the liver, and the fat-filled liver cells die. Cirrhosis of the liver is a disease in which useless scar tissue replaces normal liver tissue. Because there is no blood flow in the scarred. Heavy drinkers suffering from cirrhosis may have high blood pressure, get infections easily, have swelling of the abdomen, and show a yellowing of the skin and eyes. Cirrhosis is the last stage of liver disease and can result in death.
Cocaine is a stimulant that affects the nervous system providing short bursts of euphoria, a feeling of excitement, increased blood pressure and pulse rate, and alertness. People often use it to increase mental activity and to offset drowsiness, fatigue, or as an appetite suppressant; however, the intense high of cocaine is followed by an intense low. Rohypnol is used legally as a medical sedative in Europe and Latin America. As a drug of abuse, it is called roofies, the forget pill, and the date-rape pill. Amphetamines Similar to cocaine, amphetamines are stimulants. They stimulate the nervous system, increasing physical activity, energy, mental alertness, self-confidence, and producing euphoria. Medically, amphetamines are used to treat obesity, narcolepsy, and hyperactivity in children. Heroin is a concentrated form of morphine and is so addictive that it is illegal in the United States even for medical use. Unfortunately, it is the most abused narcotic in this country, and its use is on the rise as of the late 1990s.
