2 Classroom, Training Area, and Range Requirements Instructional Guidance b. Other materials as direct by RSP Unit SOP Organizational Classroom Before presenting this lesson, instructors must thoroughly prepare by studying this lesson and the identified reference material. This instruction is fast paced, and repeated in one form or another throughout a Soldiers assignment to RSP. It is literally the RSP Soldier s first opportunity to learn that his/her actions and personal organizational skills will be put to the test. This class is instructor heavy with little or no input from the students. It is absolutely imperative that the instructor show respect to the newly recruited Soldiers by being prepared, organized, and on time. Have a copy of and be familiar with local RSP SOP and post, camp, fort policy. Be prepared to recite those points during this lesson plan. Since policy and procedure are different from location to location, it cannot be published in this lesson plan; however it is important to point out any local hazards, to include off limit areas, civilian visitation, use of civilian automobiles, etc. Prior to drill, inventory Battle Books to ensure all items are in them. Prior to drill, write drill dates for following year on a flip chart to be shown during Battle Book instruction. 2

INTRODUCTION SHOW Slide 1 (STRM) Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio is: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 5 minutes Media: Slide Presentation Motivator Terminal Learning Objective Safety Requirements Risk Assessment Level Evaluation Instructional Lead-In You are an Army National Guard Soldier. It is the job of the RSP to prepare you for IET (initial entry training). Our goal is to ensure you are Mentally Prepared for the task at hand, Administratively Correct, so as to properly support your families and provide for any personal needs, and Physically Fit to have confidence you need, to successfully graduate from Basic Combat Training. SHOW Slide 2 (Terminal Learning Objective) Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements. Low Risk Assessment to be produced locally IAW FM 5-19, August None The intent of the Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP) is to ensure Soldiers successfully complete Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training by introducing newly enlisted ARNG Soldiers to the military environment and to ease their adjustment into that training. The mission is to prepare non-prior service enlistees, for the physical and mental rigors of initial active duty for training (IADT); instill the seven Army values in each individual, and verify that RSP Soldiers are mentally, administratively, and physically prepared to meet shipping requirements. 3
4 SECTION III. PRESENTATION 1. Learning Step / Activity 1. Welcome Brief Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: Slide Presentation SHOW Slide 3 (Generic Picture of RSP Soldiers) The following verbiage is for the convenience of the instructor, with the purpose to provide welcoming remarks to the new RSP Soldiers and a brief overview of expectations and future drill weekends. Instructors do not have to abide by this scripted welcoming and/or are encouraged to develop their own welcoming remarks that they are comfortable with. Welcome to RSP. You are to be applauded for your decision to join the most elite military organization in the world. You are coming to the Recruit Sustainment Program, or RSP, for one weekend a month for the next several months, until you leave for Basic Combat Training, or BCT. The RSP program was created so that, from the very first moment you enter the Army National Guard, you are immediately involved in gaining basic knowledge and skills necessary to get you thinking and acting like a true Soldier. It s not uncommon for an RSP Soldier to reach BCT with the advantage of having actually done things that are taught in more advanced phases of training. For instance, you will learn first aid for a bleeding extremity and proper splinting techniques, and how to use a map to determine your location as well as that of an enemy position. These tasks will be repeated in BCT, but you will have had the opportunity to familiarize yourself with them immediately, giving you the advantage at your first military assignment. In addition RSP prepares you for Advanced Individual Training, or AIT. At AIT you will learn your specialized skill to perform in the military.. What we call your Military Occupational Specialty, or MOS. That may be infantry, supply, mechanic, medic, military police, or any number of opportunities the Army National Guard provides. When you finish AIT, you ll be MOS-Qualified, or MOSQ. Don t worry if all these acronyms and terms are a little confusing. You ll pick them up very quickly. For now, just write down these and any other terms you want to remember. As we go through the next two days, we ll also be giving you additional information as well as a Battle Book to help you remember the material we ve gone over. And as I m teaching you this information, if you re unclear about any terms, don t be afraid to speak up and ask for clarification. Let the students be aware that apprehension is normal; in fact it s normal to be wary of the unknown. It s mentally and physically draining but confidence will come with knowledge and practice. The following will provide a synopsis of training activities during the Soldier s assignment to RSP. Introduce the instruction by stating the following: The Recruit Sustainment Program will incorporate instruction in; Academic, Physical Readiness, and Common Task Training. Each of you will be screened for administrative problems as well as height/weight and physical fitness. You will progress through at least three phases of Soldier Training Readiness Modules (STRM) while attending the RSP Course. Here is what to expect. 4
5 Expound on the following as appropriate (what, why, and how accomplished). a. Red Phase: The Soldier's first RSP drill weekend begins with the Red Phase. In this phase you will be in-processing and you will receive classes that will introduce you to initial Soldier skills. You will also receive a Physical Fitness Assessment. b. White Phase: The Soldier s second RSP phase. In this phase you will continue learning Soldier skills that will prepare you for Basic Combat Training. This will include Land Navigation, Tactics, and other classes to make you a better and more prepared Soldier. c. Blue Phase: This phase takes place just prior to shipping to BCT/AIT and provides an overview and review of what each Soldier should expect at Reception Battalion and Basic Combat Training (BCT). This phase will also be a last check to ensure you are mentally prepared, administratively correct, and physically fit. d. Green Phase: This phase is for Soldiers who enlisted in the Split Training Option (STO) Program and have completed Phase 1 (BCT). Green Phase Soldiers may serve as student leaders while they receive additional physical readiness, leadership, and BCT refresher training in preparation for Phase 2 (AIT) with additional emphasis on BCT skills sustainment (often referred to as sustainment training). e. Gold Phase/Battle Handoff: The Soldier's first drill after successful completion of Initial Active Duty Training (IADT) is his or her final weekend at the RSP. Gold Phase teaches Soldiers what to expect at their unit of assignment, as well as what will be expected from them. Most importantly, it provides the Battle Handoff from the RSP to the Soldier's new unit/sponsor through a formal rite of passage ceremony attended by RSP Soldiers and the gaining unit leadership. Transition into next learning activity by stating, We will cover these subjects in greater detail as we continue your initial indoctrination into the RSP, so let s take a look at your Battle Book, and explain its use, and how it can benefit you. SHOW Slide 4 (Battle Book) 2. Learning Step / Activity 2. Battle Book Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 5 mins Media: Slide Presentation Have students open the Battle Book box and take all the contents out. Inventory the items as follows. Comments on sections will not be annotated with, however they will be in bold print. You are encouraged to add your own thoughts and comments on the various sections of the Battle Book. You have approximately 5 minutes. a. Battle Book Inventory. (1) Pen. (2) Binder. (a) Planning Section. The Battle Book has daily and monthly calendar pages, allowing for note taking and comments. Start by turning to the Planning Section. Tell students to refer to the previously completed flip chart in front of them and copy down Drill Dates for the following year. Enter important dates, like projected Basic Combat Training ship date. This would be a 5
6 good time to interject standard operating procedures for drill attendance, to include names and phone numbers of the immediate chain of command. (b) Resource Directory. List of useful web sites. (c) Address Book. Have students turn to the address book and write copy down the immediate chain of command information, to include rank, name, and telephone numbers. (d) Supplemental Guide. After the Address Book you ll find the Supplemental Guide. It has numerous chapters on topics like Strength Maintenance, Leadership, Training, and Fitness. We will be going over some of this information this weekend, and some in the months to come. Remind the students that this is the time to ask questions on issues they are confused about, or just didn t catch during the presentation. Check on Learning QUESTION: In what phases will RSP Soldiers be required to take a Physical Fitness Assessment? ANSWER: Red Phase, White Phase, Blue Phase. (Be prepared to explain the difference between PFA and APFT) QUESTION: What does the acronym M.A.P. stand for? ANSWER: Mentally Prepared, Administratively Correct, and Physically Fit. Now let s discuss the procedures of for the remainder of the RSP Weekend. 3. Learning Step / Activity 3. RSP In-Process Overview Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 15 mins Media: Slide Presentation The following is an overview of steps, briefings, counseling s, and checklists the RSP Soldier, will encounter during this and following drill weekends. It should be emphasized that these inprocessing procedures will be repeated during each drill weekend, and some of them at MEPS on ship day. Explain to the students that these procedures will be repeated at ensuing drills to ensure they are mentally prepared, administratively correct, and physically fit. Though every RSP Cadre member is interested in the success of individual Soldiers, you must understand that you and you alone are responsible for your actions. If, by this point the Soldiers have found no reason to provide any self incriminating statements or items to turn in, continue with the rest of the Learning Activity. Stress to students that any and all alibis must be addressed before shipping to IET, not after. Over the course of the day, as well as in following drill weekends, you will be counseled by one of the cadre members. You have the right to speak to an RSP cadre member in private. This counseling will be a formal counseling and will explain generally what is expected of you and what you should expect from the RSP Cadre. A part of this counseling will include questions referencing any changes or corrections to your records since giving the information to your recruiter or at MEPS. Those corrections will be, but not limited to the following: a. Amnesty. SHOW Slide 5 (Amnesty) 6
7 In your own words explain the purpose of Amnesty during RSP drill, or say the following: Amnesty affords you the last opportunity to get your record straight before proceeding to Basic Combat Training, as well as rid yourself of any unauthorized or prohibited items. You will often hear Amnesty referred to as Moment of Truth. Today, you will be asked to turn over any of the following items. Frankly, in the future simply do not bring them on your person or even in your car. That way, there will be no chance of mistakes or misunderstandings. The following matrix provides you with a good idea of what not to bring to drill. Prohibited Items will be seized and not released until the end of drill weekend. PROHIBITED ITEMS (Do not bring these items or put them in the Amnesty Box) Weapons (i.e. knives, multi-tools) Drugs, Narcotics, or Alcohol Tobacco Products Counterfeit Money/Food or Candy Pornographic Items or Materials Gambling Devices (including cards) PROHIBITED ITEMS (Turn these in for safe keeping/lock in wall locker if applicable) High Dollar Value or Sentimental Items Non Prescription Medications Hats and Clothes Electronic items (cell phones, ipod, MP3, etc.) Note: A doctors note is required for prescription medications Scented lotions, cologne Magazines b. Sample Recurring Personal Questions/Events. (1) Age. Have you had a birthday since your MEPS physical? (2) Physical Condition. Has there been a change in your physical condition since your MEPS physical? For instance have you had any surgery, been seen by a medical doctor, become pregnant? What information can you provide? (3) Law Violations. Have you received any tickets of any kind, have you been arrested for any reason, have you received jury duty notification, do you have any unpaid fines for any violation since your MEPS physical, or have you remembered any previous law violations not already declared? Do you still have a driver s license (photo ID)? (4) Education. Has there been any change in educational status, failed any previous year s courses, received a GED, graduated from college, or completed an additional year of college? If so, documentation is necessary. 7
8 (5) Marital Status. Have you changed your marital status since your MEPS physical - Divorced, married, or remarried? If so, RSP needs a copy of the court certificate. (6) Dependent Status. Have you had a child since your last MEPS physical formally adopted, lost a child? Transition from Amnesty or Moment of Truth issues by giving Soldiers a 5 minute break to allow students to weigh the importance of the above, or by asking for questions and stating that in addition, this weekend, the RSP students will do and observe the following. (7) Height and Weight. You will be measured and weighed to determine if you are within Army Standards. Have a chart available and be prepared to give correct height and weight information to each RSP Soldier in the class. (8) Physical Fitness Assessment. Explain to the students that to get a true indication of the Soldier s level of physical fitness, he or she must give one hundred percent effort during the assessment in order to get guidance on improvement. (9) Issue Uniforms per Local RSP SOP. (10) Cell Phone policy per Local RSP SOP. (11) Physical Security per Local RSP SOP. (12) Financial Issues. Financial issues are typically not a major difficulty at RSP; however it is important to reiterate to students that pay becomes an issue if they do not report dependency, education, or even real estate purchases. Issues not reported could very well become major issues further down the road. Proof/documentation of these issues is required. The following briefings will be given throughout this weekend, and are a part of the regulatory briefing requirements given to all Army Soldiers here and abroad, usually on an annual basis. (13) Initial Briefings. (a) Equal Opportunity. (b) Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP). (c) Suicide Prevention. (14) Ensure Soldier has access to and knows the passwords to AKO and MyPay. If not, make a note to contact his or her recruiter during the following week. 8
9 Remind the students that this is the time to ask questions on issues they are confused about, or just didn t catch during the presentation. Check on Learning Question: Why would it be necessary to tell the RSP Cadre about the birth of a child? Answer: Though any number of answers could be generated, it is important to get that child on DEERS so that the child may be seen by military medical personnel while you are on active duty. Question: Same question regarding traffic violations. Answer: Though any number of answers could be generated, it is important to understand that the violation may be adjudicated prior to ship, or perhaps the ship date might have to be set back until all legal requirements are met. Ask a similar question about a serious injury that occurred since last drill and then a question about a sprained ankle since last drill. 4. Learning Step / Activity 4. Stripes for Skills. Soldiers who enlist as PV1 may be advanced one pay grade prior to the Soldier reporting to IET. The Soldier must demonstrate proficiency on every task prior to being recommended for advancement. b. Stripes for Buddies. Soldiers will be promoted to E-2 if they refer one qualified non-prior service or prior service applicant who enlists. If they refer two non-prior or prior service applicants who enlist, they will be promoted to E-3.
