Word Wall Vocabulary: Franklin D. Roosevelt: US President at the time of US entry into World War II Japanese imperialism: Japanese takeover of Korea, Manchuria, and French Indochina Kamikaze: Japanese pilots who committed suicide by flying into US warships during the Pearl Harbor attack Pearl Harbor: US Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Attack on December 7, 1941, was the reason for US entry into WWII Yamamoto: Japanese emperor during WWII
What happened prior to World War II? When the global depression struck, many civilians blamed the government. Military leaders won control of Japan The Japanese army seized Manchuria for their oil and coal Four years later, Japan invaded China (the Rape of Nanjing) Japan hoped to gain resources from European colonies in Southeast Asia
Turn and Talk The Japanese allowed a military government to take control after the global depression. How is this similar to Hitler s rise to power? ANS: The global depression caused unemployment and fear. People were willing to give up their civil liberties in order to be protected. Germans let Hitler take power because he was able to end the global depression in Germany. Japanese let a military government develop for the same reasons.
Attack on Pearl Harbor US knew about Japan s plans for colonies in Southeast Asia and sent aid to China Roosevelt then cut off Japanese oil supplies in 1941 Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941
Attack on Pearl Harbor
Attack on Pearl Harbor Within two hours, Japanese had damaged 19 ships (including 8 battleships) More than 2,300 Americans were killed On December 7 ( a date which will live in infamy ), 1941, the US declared war on Japan
Turn and Talk Why is Pearl Harbor significant? ANS: It marks the beginning of America s involvement in World War II
Guided Practice: Summary In the bottom portion of your c-notes, complete a summary over Japanese imperialism and the attack on Pearl Harbor For help, use the following sentence stems: Some examples of Japanese imperialism before World War II are Pearl Harbor is significant because
Fun Fact Kamikaze were Japanese airplanes that were loaded with explosives for the pilot to purposefully fly into and destroy enemy supplies Three sailors aboard the USS West Virginia were found months later- they had survived for 16 days underwater before they ran out of air
