2 This page intentionally left blank Trail Life USA Freedom Award Procedure Guide Supplement for Youth and Adult Eagle Scouts

3 Youth Freedom Award Process To earn the Trail Life USA Freedom Award, a Trailman in the Adventurers program is required to complete his Horizon Award, four real-life hands-on Freedom Experiences in our Majors and Minors Program, Troop involvement requirements, a Faith Building Activity, and a Servant Leadership Project. The Freedom Experiences are experiences in active citizenry that help prepare a boy for the real majors and minors program at college or life in the world as an active Christian man. A youth who holds the BSA Eagle Scout Rank upon transfer to Trail Life USA (TLUSA) is deemed to have credit for the Horizon Award, three Freedom Experiences, sixteen Troop activities, and a Servant Leadership Project. He may qualify to earn the Freedom Award as a youth by doing the following: 1. Joining the Adventurers program as a registered member of Trail Life USA. 2. Earning the Journey Award. 3. Completing one Freedom Experience while a registered Adventurer to establish his major for the Freedom Award. His participation in this Freedom Experience must be pre-approved by the Adventurers Advisor from the Course List of Freedom Experiences identified in the Freedom Experiences Course Catalog. 4. Maintaining active participation as an Adventurer to the satisfaction of the Adventurers Advisor. 5. Complete a Faith Building Activity Option for Adventurers Advancement. This may also be fulfilled by transferring one of the TLUSA recognized high school Religious Recognitions if completed while a high school student. See the Faith Building Activity Options for Adventurers document for specific requirements. 6. Successfully complete an Advancement Conference with his Advisor and Troopmaster as outlined in the Freedom Award Procedure Guide. 7. Submit a Youth Freedom Award Application along with the standard Award Binder documentation as modified below (see pp. 7-8). An Eagle Scout transfer youth will use the modified application on pages 7-8 INSTEAD OF the standard application in the Freedom Award Procedure Guide (FAPG). 8. Successfully complete a Freedom Board of Review as outlined in the Freedom Award Procedure Guide. The application, Advancement Conference, and Freedom Board of Review procedures will be as described in the Freedom Award Procedure Guide (FAPG) except for the following differences as specifically outlined here in this Supplement to that Guide: Include proof of Eagle Scout Rank and a printout of the BSA-to-TLUSA Transfer Module with the Youth Freedom Award Application (for Eagle Scout Transfers from BSA). Trail Life USA Freedom Award Procedure Guide Supplement for Youth and Adult Eagle Scouts

4 There will be no Servant Leadership Project documentation needed because an Eagle Scout is credited with completing this project when transferring to TLUSA. The Freedom Award Review Board will not be reviewing the Eagle Project completed in the BSA. Only the body of work that the boy completes in Trail Life USA will be assessed. Thus, the two parts of the Award Binder for a transferring Eagle Scout will contain the following: The first part contains the application materials, including: 1. Youth Freedom Award Application (see pp. 7-8) Attach proof of Eagle Scout Rank and printout of the BSA-to-TLUSA Transfer Module. 2. Life Ambitions Essay (See Advancement Conference in Part III in the Freedom Award Procedure Guide): His ambitions for life beyond graduation His key leadership responsibilities in Trail Life USA that have helped pre- His key leadership responsibilities in other organizations that have 3. Reference letters collected by the Trailman: Four to six reference letters should be included in the binder as instructed in the Reference Letters subsection of Part III in the Freedom Award Procedure Guide. The second part contains all the documentation establishing completion of the Freedom Award requirements. 1. TroopTrack advancement report showing Journey Award, Horizon Award and Trail Badge completion dates. 2. Copy of Freedom Experiences log from handbook (or equivalent) and completion documentation with 3. Copy of Freedom Award Activity log from handbook (or equivalent) may be included, but is not required for Eagle Scout transfers. Note: Troop meeting attendance is verified at the Advancement Conference. No records related to meeting attendance should be submitted in the Awards Binder. 4. Completion certificate or letter for the selected faith-building activity and any relevant summary material such as a testimony, summary report, etc. 5. Copy of sign-off for the Freedom Award Advancement Conference. After reviewing all available materials, if questions remain about this process, please contact your Troop Leaders for assistance. Troop Leaders will seek assistance of their Area Team if needed. Trail Life USA Freedom Award Procedure Guide Supplement for Youth and Adult Eagle Scouts

Founders usually take initial troop leadership positions such as Charter Organization Representative, Troopmaster, Committee Chair, Treasurer, Chaplain, Ranger, Trailmaster and Advisor, however, being picked to be one of those positions does not necessarily make one a founder.
