Officers spent several hours attempting to locate the vehicle. At 0307 hours on April 3, Officer Matero located the defendant's vehicle. The 5 defendant was eventually taken into custody after the vehicle crashed at 5 West Granada Blvd (Ormond Beach Walmart). The defendant, who 6 was operating the vehicle at the time, was taken into custody on several warrants out of Broward County. However, due to the engine fire and intrusion from the collision, the vehicle could not be 8 fully searched and was towed to 68 Railway Street (Daytona Wrecker Service). 9 0 After the vehicle's metal had the opportunity to cool, Lieutenant Mays responded to the wrecker compound to attempt to locate an firearms or other contraband or valuables. While searching the driver's portion of the vehicle's interior, Lieutenant Mays could feel a hard object under the floor mat. Upon removing the floor mat from the hooks that secure it in place, he discovered a Taurus.357. The defendant's 7 feet would have to directly upon the uneven surface created by the firearm being hidden there. Additionally, with the way the matt was secured, there 8 is no way the firearm slid under the matt during the collision. Due to the lack of blood under the matt, the firearm was placed there prior to the 9 collision. 0 The defendant is a 0 convicted felon in the State of Florida. His latest conviction was on October 7, 04, for the charges of Burglary and Commission of a nd Degree Felony While Wearing a Mask. 3 4 Lieutenant Mays took photographs of the area the firearm was located and the firearm itself.
