Take Pride in Yourselves This Independence Day We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. - The Declaration of Independence These are not just words. This sentence embodies the very foundation of America. It captures the essence of what it means to be an American citizen. Our forefathers dedicated their lives and fought gallantly to leave a legacy of freedom and equality for generations to follow. The 13 original colonies of the United States declared independence from Britain on July 4, They grew weary of the problems the people faced under the rule of King George III, whose dictatorship extended 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. The people were tired of unfair taxes and an oppressive government. Angered by their lack of a voice in government, Americans determined to govern themselves. It would take eleven long years before our Constitution and Bill of Rights were created in Today the fight continues to establish freedom around the globe. We currently fight a faceless enemy who attempts to enslave through the use of terror. They fight against the freedoms of speech, press and Lt. Gen. R. Steven Whitcomb Third Army/USARCENT Commanding General You -- Soldier, Airmen, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Soldiers in Slacks -- are fighting every day, making significant personal sacrifices for duty, honor and country. religion that we so richly enjoy. You - Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Soldiers in Slacks - are fighting every day, making significant personal sacrifices for duty, honor and country. You, like our forefathers who fought so hard to establish America and the Declaration of Independence, are the patriots of today that ensure our children s children enjoy those same freedoms. You represent the best of our nation and you represent that same liberty and the spirit of independence established by our forefathers on July 4 th, What you are fighting for is worth it. Because of your efforts, America s sons and daughters will not be denied the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You are the protector of your families, your communities, your Nation and represent to the world what is right about the United States. Remain steadfast in your commitment to defeat our enemies who attempt to take away our earned freedoms and live the values of our Army every day. Remember, America is the land of the free because of the brave. As I think of you this holiday, the one feeling that rises above all others is an intense sense of pride. I could not have asked for a more dedicated and professional team you are truly superb! Desert Voice July 5,

Reaching for the Stars Photo by Sgt. Thomas L. Day Colonel Patrick A. Murphy became the newest officer promotable to the rank of Brigadier General in the Iowa National Guard, June 23. Iowa Guard officer reaches career milestone Sgt. Thomas L. Day CFLCC PAO/ 40th PAD The month of June marked Col. Patrick A. Murphy s twentieth consecutive month deployed with the Third U.S. Army in his 29th year in the Army. His career began in 1977 as an enlisted supply clerk. He served in the Guard while attending Iowa State University graduated Officer Candidate School in 1979 and finished his Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy (field-crop production and soil management) in 1982 before heading off to his first duty assignment as a rifle platoon leader. 4 Desert Voice July 5, 2006 During his nearly three decades in uniform, Murphy has flown helicopters, commanded a platoon, company and a battalion, and earned two master s degrees. His already impressive resume earned him a phone call June 23rd from Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Mark Zirkelbach of the Iowa Guard s Adjutant General s office. The Senate had confirmed his nomination to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. The position I m in right now, I have daily contact with Soldiers and that s what I enjoy. That s not going to change with my promotion, Murphy said. Murphy has no idea what his next duty position will be or when he will pin on his new rank. Currently he is based out of Atlanta assigned to the Third U.S. Army as assistant chief of staff for National Guard affairs. It s going to be a challenge. Murphy s promotion comes at a time when National Guard Soldiers have been sent into battle as frequently as their active duty counterparts. According to Murphy, two-thirds of the entire National Guard has been activated since Sept. 11, 2001, for homeland security missions, deployment to Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world. Many of the National Guard Soldiers have Murphy continued on Page 10

The Sun Sets: Japanese Troops Redeploy From Iraq After Two and a Half Years in OIF. They reflect on their contribution to the Coalition. Spc. Debrah A. Robertson Desert Voice Magazine Staff Writer Mission complete. Long hours stretch into long nights. Missing family, friends and home, Japanese soldiers work hard to improve the lives of Iraqi citizens. After nearly two and a half years of hard work, Japan s Ground Self-Defense Forces will be moving out of Southern Iraq and into neighboring Kuwait on their redeployment back to Japan. The Japanese media has reported that the troops will be out of Iraq by the end of July, but Maj. Gregory Willingham, a country officer at Task Force Gator, disagreed. There is a set window for the movement of the troops out of Iraq, but there is not an exact date for all of the troops to arrive in Kuwait, he said. The movement of equipment is expected in the coming weeks, said British Maj. Sebastian Muntz, a British military spokesman in Iraq. It will be some time before the camp is in a condition to be handed over to the Iraqis. [The Japanese troops] are expected to remain in Kuwait no more than 30 days prepping equipment for its shipment home, said Willingham. While at Camp Virginia the soldiers will be resting and recuperating as well as readying their gear for departure back to Japan, and although ground troops are departing, the Japanese air force intends to remain in Kuwait and expand its mission, Willingham continued. Japan can continue to support Operation Iraqi Freedom with air power, he added. The [Japanese] air force is a great help to us. We trust them to do well when we leave, said 1 st Lt. Kazunori Yanagawa, the welfare and public relations officer of Japan s 5 th Task Planning and Liaison Unit. Dubbed the riskiest and most ambitious overseas mission the Japanese army has faced since the Second World War, Tokyo has sustained its ground force of approximately 550 troops in the southern city of Samawa, Iraq, since January It s very dangerous, said Willingham. For a lot of them it s their first deployment overseas. The Japanese army has been conducting a reconstruction and humanitarian effort in Iraq, a purely noncombatant mission, he said. Engineering to improve the quality of life for Iraqi citizens has been their main objective, said Maj. Hiroki Yamakami of the 5 th Task Planning and Liaison Unit, a Japan Iraqi-Reconstruction Support Group. The Japanese offered support to the efforts in Iraq including water supply issues, the construction of schools for Iraqi children and road construction, said Yamakami. They also offered instructional classes to Iraqi citizens on essential issues in Iraq, such as medical instruction. I believe that in five to 10 years, when the children [of Iraq] grow up, they will think about the Japanese support, said Yamakami about the humanitarian efforts of the Japanese army. I want to express my profound respect and gratitude to the Self-Defense Forces who sweated in tough conditions with the strong awareness they were conducting their activities in Iraq for all of the Japanese people, said the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at a news conference on June 20. I m happy that [the prime minister] is proud of us, I m [also] proud of the mission, said Yanagawa. We can go back to Japan with pride. Although the mission for the Japanese army is now complete, it was a complicated process at times. The British army directs a multinational contingent in the area that includes Japanese troops, and Japan had to rely on them and their See Sunset on Page 10 Japanese equipment has already begun to trickle into Kuwait on its way to the Kuwait City port. 6 Seeing Through the Fog of War From a Childhood on the Battlefield of Sarajevo, Sgt. Admir Aganovic Finds a New Home in U.S. Army. Sgt. Patrick N. Moes Assistant Editor, Desert Voice Magazine Walking back from a childhood friend s house after a day filled with soccer, swimming and kids being kids, a 7-year-old boy hears a gunfight erupt in the distance. Running through the field that separates the boy s house from his friend, Admir Aganovic hears the sounds of gun shots snap as they scream past him. Aganovic is trapped in the middle of war-torn Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. An infantry sergeant with A Company, 2nd Battalion, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Brigade, Aganovic came to know the complexities and the horrors of war long before he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Aganovic said he remembered seeing big riots in 1991 while he walked to school. He also saw planes flying overhead. When he reached school, he was told there would be 6 Desert Voice July 5, 2006 no class today, tomorrow, nor any time soon. War had started in Aganovic s backyard playground. A child s understanding of war can not comprehend the devastation and destruction happening all around and Aganovic was no exception. I was scared, but just a kid, said Aganovic. I d hear gunshots and go back to playing basketball. Boyhood curiosity led Aganovic to follow United Nations soldiers and their humvees around Sarajevo. He said there used to be a group of four kids from his neighborhood that would go everywhere together. They d go to the U.N. compound every day looking for candy from the soldiers, but all too often, received only boiled eggs. Not the best tasting candy for an energetic kid, Aganovic said with a look of disbelief. The candy-chasing boy dealt with war first-hand as well. His dad was an electrician Photos by Sgt. Patrick N. Moes by trade but would leave for months at a time to fight in the war. He put down his tools and pliers and picked up an AK-47 machine gun, said Aganovic. His dad was injured in 1994 when a mortar attack landed near his position wounding his left leg and arm. The attack occurred shortly before the market place bombing that killed 68 people in February of the same year. The aftermath of the deadliest of three market place bombings allowed for Aganovic and his family to seek asylum in the United States. He said there was a lot of attention toward the victims of the bombings to grant them asylum in the U.S. Aganovic and his family were fortunate and received sponsorship by a Pakistani family from Milwaukee. Boarding military fighting vehicles in the heart of Sarajevo, the family left the city and its war for the airport. After a brief two-week stay at a U.S. military base in Germany,

Aganovic and his family landed in the United States. Adjusting to life in America was a difficult process at first for the now 10-year-old boy. He said he recalled one of the first days he went to school and his sponsors had given him money for lunch. Upon arriving at school, Aganovic approached the teacher with money in hand. With the only English words he knew, the charismatic boy tried to give the money to the teacher by saying money, lunch with a thick Bosnian accent. Aganovic said he assumed the teacher kept saying no, no, we have tickets for lunch. English came to Aganovic by form of pictures at English as a Second Language classes and by playing sports. By the following school year, the sixth-grader was now able to communicate with his teachers and his peers. He had learned the language and was now ready for life in America. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Aganovic said he wanted to serve the country that had given him so much. He also wanted to do something that would challenge him. Wanting to continue working on his education, he joined the Wisconsin National Guard in January Aganovic completed his training at Fort Benning, Ga., and returned to Milwaukee where he joined his unit. After being called to active duty, Aganovic and his unit trained at Camp Shelby, Miss., in The infantryman had only one thing left to do before he deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom - get his citizenship. Aganovic is a practical jokester at heart, said Sgt. Dan Constantineau, a friend in his unit. He s been known to use markers to draw on sleeping Soldiers, he recalled with a smile, only for them to realize what he did later while in the dining facility. Constantineau said he has also heard Aganovic talk about war on the other side of a conflict and the situation here. I know how they feel, said Constantineau. They don t have anything. Although the fields of Bosnia are long behind Aganovic, the journey his life has taken has brought him through the war in Bosnia, a deployment to Kuwait, U.S. citizenship, the opportunity to play basketball during Operation Hardwood II and meeting Fox Sports reporter and magazine covergirl Leeann Tweeden. Aganovic and his family imigrated to the United States in 1994 shortly after his father was wounded in an Rocket Propelled Grenade attack. In 2002, he enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard as an infantryman. Desert Voice July 5,

History on the Walls: The Story Behind the Unit Posters at Zone 1 Arifjan Gym Photos by Spc. Debrah A. Robertson A day at the Zone 1 gym takes on special meaning for Frank Chatmen, who worked for a number of units represented on the walls surrounding the basketball court. Spc. Debrah A. Robertson Desert Voice Magazine Staff Writer They loom overhead, glossy and colorful, a picture of pride and motivation. The unit boards at Zone 1 and Zone 6 fitness centers at Camp Arifjan have hung proudly since the late summer of Although relatively new, the boards are of historical importance because they have survived the dissolution of Camp Doha earlier this year. The boards were brought from Doha to Camp Arifjan shortly before the camp officially closed its gates. Sheryl VanLandingham, the Morale, Welfare and Recreation manager at Arifjan, transferred from Doha after its closure. She has seen the unit boards move from their old home to Arifjan and knows what they mean to the Soldiers who were at Doha. They re meaningful to servicemembers who rotate through and see their unit boards on display, said VanLandingham, especial- Unit posters featured at the gym include calling cards left by units from the famed 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Special Operations units and even European Coalition partners. ly those who have rotated through more than once. The boards represent units from division sized elements down to a sevenmember detachment. I think they were very proud of what they accomplished while they were here, said Frank Chatmen, a retired noncommissioned officer who is currently working at the Military Professional Resources Incorporated office at Camp Arifjan. While enlisted, Chatmen offered support to many of the units that were in Doha, and now he is able to see their unit boards preserved. The unit boards were previously housed at Uncle Frosty s, a popular hangout for troops at Doha. After the closing of Frosty s, 98 boards were taken to Arifjan s Zone 1, while the remaining 75 were hung at Zone 6 several-months-later, where they can be viewed 24 hours a day. 8 Desert Voice July 5, 2006

Five Forks Finishes Radar, Armor Upgrades Spc. Christopher Jones Desert Voice Magazine Staff Writer The Five Forks, a 150-foot landing craft utility boat docked at the shipyard at Kuwait Naval Base, is nearly ready to unveil several upgrades, including the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information system (C4I), a high-tech, highly automated navigation program. Armor and weapons upgrades are also currently being added to Five Forks, said Chief Warrant Officer Two Michael Mitchell, vessel master. C4I offers a visual presentation of the ocean and its activity, but unlike some earlier programs, the data is collected from several sources: synthetic aperture radar, electro-optical sensors and infrared sensors, said Mitchell. Pulling data from so many sensors reduces possible errors while also offering backup systems in case another malfunctions. With the advanced tracking systems included in C4I, another benefit is being able to track other nearby ships far ahead of time, reducing the threat of collision while allowing for more direct, effective routes. These are very good tools, said Mitchell, a member of the Army Reserve s 481st Transportation Heavy Boat Company out of Vallejo, Calif. They give us a better idea of where we re at and expected time of arrival, so they allow us to plan our courses more efficiently. Besides the Army, the Navy and Coast Guard also have vessels equipped with the C4I System. The final outcome, said Mitchell, is it basically improves mission readiness. The Five Forks, whose name is drawn from the Civil War battle in Virginia, runs logistical support missions for troops in theater. It has the capability to haul virtually everything, from humvees to tanks to large storage containers. Over the last nine months since Mitchell and his crew of 12 have been docked at KNB, the Five Forks has sailed virtually everywhere in the Persian Gulf. While installing C4I, it has been docked for its longest period this year: six weeks. Photos by Spc. Christopher C. Jones (Top) Tracy Hixson (top left) balances a piece of armor as Larry Hayes welds it to a ledge on the Five Points Army ship. (Bottom) Larry Hayes, a DoD contracted welder, checks an armor wall to see that it will fit along a ledge on the upper deck of a ship docked at Kuwait Naval Base. Department of Defense contractors from Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Tex., have been installing the up-armor shields. By next week, they should begin installing the platforms for the weapons systems, which will include two 50-caliber machine guns and two M249 squad automatic weapons. Sunday afternoon, Chris Stone, Tracy Hixson and Hayes, welders from Red River, finished attaching the armor plates on the upper deck, where the M249s will be. The system, including the weapons upgrade, should be complete by August. Desert Voice July 5,

EMF Kuwait Celebrates Hospital Corps 108th Birthday HM1 David Crain and HM2 Kellie Milton Expeditionary Medical Facility-Kuwait Sailors with the Expeditionary Medical Facility-Kuwait based at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait recently celebrated the 108th Birthday of the Hospital Corps with a 108 mile run in the desert heat, a birthday luncheon and evening ball at several camps in two countries. The run event was organized by Hospital Corpsman Third Class Brian Sellman, a General Duty Corpsman from Naval Medical San Diego. Starting on the morning of June 16 with HM3 Lonetta Odom running the first mile, the event ran continuously for the next 24 hours, covering 108 miles, split between participants at Camp Arifjan and Camp Buehring in Kuwait and Camp As Saliyah in Qatar. One of the runners was Hospital Corpsman First Class Jean Hallmark, of Naval Hospital Lemoore. An avid runner and fully acclimated to the desert heat, he ran one mile during the mid-afternoon with temperatures approaching 124 degrees while wearing full Desert Camouflage Uniform along with Kevlar, flak jacket, and his M-1 Medical Bag. Later in the evening he ran more miles minus the extra gear. Throughout the day and night, the run was supplemented by other activities such as football games, softball games, and cookouts. At 6:00 a.m. on June 17, more than 60 EMF Sailors joined with the commanding officer, Capt C. Forrest Faison, to run the final mile. With Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Eric Faulkner calling cadence, the group made their way through Camp Arifjan, calling notice to the Hospital Corps. Faison wrapped up the ceremonial run up by thanking the Corpsmen for their distinguished service. You are the Pride of Navy Medicine, carrying on, in every time zone Murphy continued used up their mobilization time, so the idea of resetting the force and being prepared for the next round of potential deployments is going to have to be met somehow. It s going to be a challenge. Sergeant Maj. Bradley W. Murfitt, Murphy s top enlisted soldier, holds faith in his boss that he can help the Guard stay ready. He has a lot of experience and knowledge that he s shared with me since I ve been here, Murfitt said of Murphy, for whom he has worked for since April. 10 Desert Voice July 5, 2006 Photo by HM3 Debra Hanson Captain C. Happy Birthday Corpsmen! The birthday celebration was capped off by a moving tribute to the Hospital Corps by several speakers including two combat seasoned corpsmen during the evening Birthday Ball organized by Sellman and the Senior Enlisted Association of EMF Kuwait. During his remarks, Faison recounted his most memorable experiences with Hospital Corpsmen in the field, describing that special bond he saw between a Corpsman and their patients, often Marines, found nowhere else. He ended by telling corpsmen that the caduceus they wear represents hope and life to countless thousands around the world who owe their lives to a group of heroes who have always put others before self: Navy corpsmen. Sunset continued Australian counterparts for protection during their deployment to Iraq. Working with American officers was exciting but at the same time challenging, said Yamakami. I learned from my counterparts, received their support and gained friendships, Yamakami said of Maj. The Japanese [officers] are really independent. Throughout their moving accounts were events that illustrated the time honored tradition of heroism under fire to deliver battlefield care to save the lives of their Marines, events that have occurred countless times in all parts of the globe over the 108-year history of the Hospital Corps. Attendees stood at attention as the names of the 19 Hospital Corpsmen killed in action during OIF and OEF were read by Seeley and Dupuis. For all participants in the various birthday activities across Kuwait and Qatar came a renewed sense of respect and pride for the many years of honor, courage and commitment displayed by the Hospital Corps. know what they re doing, added 1 st Lt. Blackwell, Platoon Leader of 377 th TSC. I enjoyed the opportunity to work with [the Japanese army], said Willingham. They are very professional and efficient. I learned a lot working with the Ground Self- Defense Force, and I formed friendships with the liaison officers. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-maliki has said publically that he wants Iraqi troops to take over the Muthanna governorate, where most of the Japanese delegation had been operating from, by the end of this summer.
