1 National Convention AUGUST 8 1 1, 2015 Convention Program

2 Welcome from the President

3 Denver Facts 1 Denver is known as the Mile High City. The 13th step on the west side of the Colorado State Capitol Building is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level one mile high. The dome of the Colorado state capitol is plated with real 24 karat gold. In 1893, while on top of nearby Pikes Peak, Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write the words to America the Beautiful. Denver brews more beer than any other city in the nation, with over 200 different beers brewed daily. Denver is one of the 12 U.S. cities to have teams from four major sports (baseball, hockey, football and basketball). Denver has the largest city park system in the nation, with 14,000 acres of mountain parks and 2,500 acres of natural areas. The Denver mint is the single largest producer of coins in the world. You can tell if a coin is made in Denver by a D mark. ALERT: While you are here, drinking plenty of water is the number one way to help your body adjust easily to the higher altitude. The low humidity in Colorado keeps the air dry, like the desert, so you need about twice as much water there as you would drink at home. Complimentary water will be available for the duration of the event, provided by Denver Water in recognition of our nation s disabled veterans and their families. Source: denver-facts/

23 DAV Mission Statement 21 We are dedicated to a single purpose: empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America s injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life. This mission is carried forward by: Providing free, professional assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services earned through military service and provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies of government; Providing outreach concerning its program services to the American people generally, and to disabled veterans and their families specifically; Representing the interests of disabled veterans, their families, their widowed spouses and their orphans before Congress, the White House and the Judicial Branch, as well as state and local government; Extending the DAV s mission of hope into the communities where these veterans and their families live through a network of state-level Departments and local Chapters; and Providing a structure through which disabled veterans can express their compassion for their fellow veterans through a variety of volunteer programs.
