1 Jayhawk Area Council Boy Scouts of America National Youth Leadership Training Dear Scout, Congratulations on registering to attend the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course for The course will be held at Falley Scout Reservation at 8602 Kingman Rd in Oskaloosa, KS. You should plan to arrive on Sunday, May 28, between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM. Please eat lunch prior to arriving at camp. Your parent(s) and Scout Leader(s) are encouraged to return on Friday, June 2 th. They should plan to arrive no earlier than 7:00 PM for a parent(s)/scout Leader(s) meeting with the NYLT leadership. A course completion recognition closing assembly will follow for you and your fellow course attendees after a short hike to Inspiration Point. During the week of the course you will have a chance to try many new Leadership Skills that you can use in the program of your own Troop, Team, or Crew. Since you are a leader in your unit you will naturally want to know how to perform your leadership role better. Developing your leadership ability, acquiring new skills, and building lifelong friendships are at the heart of the NYLT course. During the week, you and other youth leaders from all over Jayhawk Area Council will be living, camping, and working together as members of a scouting team. A very fine staff has been recruited to assist in the training. Enclosed is a list of equipment you will need to bring with you. If you have any problems with this list, check with your Scout Leader for help. Also, all outstanding fees must be paid to the Jayhawk Area Council Scout Service Center before the first day of the course. Please complete the Annual BSA Health and Medical Record available here: Click on the one titled Are You Going to Camp. Parts A, B, and C are all required. You will also need to sign the Participant Code of Conduct. These forms should be completed and submitted at check in on the May 28 along with a copy of current health insurance coverage documentation. Please note the medical form requires both a parent s or guardian s signature with current medical information and a physician s examination. The physical examination must be no earlier than 1 year prior to the first date of the course. We look forward to an exciting week! 3 NYLT Jayhawk Area Council Boy Scouts of America PARTICIPANT CODE OF CONDUCT By signing this code of conduct, all participants and their parents agree to the conditions of the statements contained within. It is further understood that serious misconduct or infraction of rules and regulations may prevent you from completing this course and require your parent(s)/guardian to provide transportation home should your participation in the program be terminated. As young men/women, you are responsible for your own behavior. A SCOUT IS.... TRUSTWORTHY I will arrive at all classes and scheduled programming on time. I will tell the truth in all situations. I will respect the privacy of others, and enter another campsite only when invited. I will inform NYLT staff if I find an item left in a program area. LOYAL I will support my team leader, youth leader(s), team guide, and adult leaders. I will wear the Scout/Venture uniform when asked, as a sign of loyalty to the Boys Scouts of America, and my fellow Scouts/Venturers. HELPFUL I will demonstrate that I care about others through my words, actions and deeds. I will readily and gladly volunteer to help others without expecting payment or reward. FRIENDLY Camp brings together people with diverse backgrounds; so, I will be friendly to all. COURTEOUS I will treat others with courtesy. I will respect my fellow Scouts/Venturers, and the youth and adult leadership of NYLT. I will show good manners at all times. KIND I will not call fellow Scouts/Ventures, staff members and adult leaders names. I will treat other persons and their property as I would like to be treated. I will be kind to all of nature s creatures, and to our environment. OBEDIENT I will obey all appropriate requests made to me by people in leadership roles. I will obey all the rules of Camp Jayhawk. CHEERFUL I will be cheerful in all situations. THRIFTY I will recycle all appropriate materials. I will make best use of the food and other materials entrusted to me. I will observe quiet time at the opening and closing of each day. BRAVE I will do what is right, regardless of what anyone else may say. CLEAN I will keep our campsite and my personal gear clean. I will keep my clothing clean. I will be clean in my speech. I will not use alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs. REVERENT I will respect the beliefs of others. 4 National Youth Leadership Training Personal Equipment List Notes: All are expected to be wearing a complete official BSA uniform appropriate for your Home Scout Unit when they arrive at check-in. The complete uniform includes shirt, pants, socks, and belt. Pictures will be taken when you arrive. Before coming, see that all badges and insignia are properly placed on the uniform (refer to the enclosed Uniform Inspection sheet as a guide). No clothing with non-scout logos, such as advertising slogans, or school & sports team emblems will be worn. Any scouting or plain-colored T-shirt is acceptable. Non-Scouting T-shirts will be worn at specified times only. Backpack or duffle bag should be used for gear. It is NOT recommended that suitcases, footlockers, or trunks be used at the campsite. NO cell phones, ipods, radios, game devices, or other electronics are to be brought to camp. Only exception is a GPS unit. NO snack food is to be brought with you. There will be no place to store it and NO FOOD is to be stored in personal gear. DO NOT BRING anything that should not be brought to a Scout Camp. 5 Uniform Inspection Sheet Boy Scout/Varsity Conduct the uniform inspection with common sense; the basic rule is neatness GENERAL APPEARANCE Allow 3 points for each: Good posture Clean face and hands Combed hair Neatly dressed Clean fingernails HEADGEAR All troop members must wear the headgear chosen by vote of the troop/team. SHIRT & NECKWEAR Official long- or short-sleeve uniform shirt with green or blaze orange shoulder loops on epaulets. The troop/team may vote to wear a neckerchief, bolo tie, or no neckwear. In any case, the collar should be unbuttoned. The troop/team has the choice of wearing the neckerchief over the turned-under collar or under the open collar. PANTS/SHORTS Official uniform pants or shorts; no cuffs. (Units have no option to change.) BELT Official Boy Scout web belt with BSA insignia on buckle; or official leather belt with buckle of your choice, worn only if voted by the troop/team. Members wear one of the belts chosen by vote of the troop/team. SOCKS Official socks with official shorts or pants. (Long socks are optional with shorts.) SHOES Leather or canvas, neat and clean. REGISTRATION Current membership card or temporary certificate on person. UNIFORM POINTS Total points from above (70 possible) INSIGNIA* (Allow points for each) Correct placement: left sleeve right sleeve left pocket right pocket merit badge sash Correct shoulder epaulets Use the checklist on the reverse of this form to help determine score. *For more information about insignia, see the Insignia Guide, No TOTAL UNIFORM INSPECTION SCORE A perfect score is 100 points. 6 Uniform Inspection Sheet Boy Scout/Varsity 30 Official Placement of Insignia Conduct the uniform inspection with common sense; the basic rule is neatness. MERIT BADGE SASH (not shown) If worn, merit badges are attached to front (and back, if needed) of sash. Venturing/Varsity letter is attached at bottom front corner. Temporary insignia may be worn on back. SHOULDER EPAULETS Green shoulder loops identify Boy Scouting (all members of a troop). Blaze (orange) loops identify Varsity Scouting. RIGHT SLEEVE U.S. flag emblem centered directly below shoulder seam. Only the most recently earned Journey to Excellence Award may be worn below patrol emblem or below the National Honor Patrol star (if earned). LEFT SLEEVE Council shoulder emblem, unit numeral, and veteran unit bar are worn as shown and touching each other. On official shirts with left-sleeve pocket, the badge of office is centered on pocket and the trained emblem is centered at top of pocket s flap. On shirts without left-sleeve pocket, the badge of office is centered below and just touching the unit numeral, or centered 4 below shoulder seam. The trained strip is worn just below the badge of office. On the official uniform shirt, the veteran unit bar (2, 0,, 60, 6, 70, 7, or 80 years) is positioned above and touching the troop numeral; below and touching the council emblem. Den chief cord is worn over the left shoulder, under epaulet. RIGHT POCKET Jamboree insignia (only one) is worn above BSA or interpreter strip. Order of the Arrow lodge insignia is worn on pocket flap. Temporary insignia is worn centered on the pocket or hung from the button. The Varsity or Venture strip is worn above the BSA strip or above the interpreter strip. Nameplate, if worn, is centered above the BSA strip, interpreter strip, and Venture or Varsity strip. If no Order of the Arrow lodge emblem is worn, the name plate is centered on the pocket flap. LEFT POCKET Service stars are centered above the pocket, ¾ inch from top point to top point and 3/8 inch from either the pocket or embroidered knots. Embroidered square knots are worn centered above the pocket in rows of three. No more than five medals may be worn, pinned centered immediately above the pocket (extending over knots if both are worn). The wearing sequence for knots or medals is at the wearer s discretion and lead color is to the wearer s right. Badges of rank are worn centered on the pocket above the Arrow of Light Award, as shown. The World Crest emblem and (optional) 1910 World Crest Ring are worn centered horizontally over the left pocket and vertically between the left shoulder seam and the top of the pocket.
