1 Seven Feathers Chapter Golden Sun Lodge Order of the Arrow Proudly Presents: The 23 nd Annual Merit Badge University March 3, 2018 Southeast Community College Beatrice, NE
2 MBU Schedule 8:00-8:45 AM Check-in (Kennedy Center Commons Area) 8:45-9:00 AM Welcome 9:00-NOON Session #1 NOON-1:00 PM Lunch (Kennedy Center Snack Bar) 1:00-4:00 PM Session #2 4:00 PM Depart for Home Registration Due to demand and planning more accurately for the numbers of units wishing to participate, registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is open until February 28, No late registrations will be accepted at the office or at the event. We will make no exceptions to this policy!!! Late registrations or walk-ins are not accepted in order to accommodate Scouts and arrange merit badge classes. Adults be sure to check out the opportunities to register for leader trainings. Event Size Limit There will be a limit to the total number of Scouts in each class, which then also limits the size of the entire event. Depending upon the merit badge, Scouts might be allowed registration in each class. Depending upon the merit badge offered we are reserving the right to have a lower class size potentially for some merit badges. We realize some units may not get to participate or have their first choice of merit badges. It will be important to have your registration in early due to the dynamics of on-line registration. Check-In Procedures When your unit arrives at Southeast Community College, each unit will send one (1) adult to the registration table to register the unit and pick up any necessary materials. Please note the leader needs to have knowledge of the youth attending and their registered classes. Each unit will receive an information packet that includes wrist band(s), a list of classes that unit youth are registered for and other information materials. Please remember, no one will be allowed to register the day of, or switch merit badge classes on site. PLAN ACCORDINGLY! Adult leaders are responsible make sure their scouts are attending their classes. Merit Badge Requirements Attention! Merit badge requirements used, will be the most current, accurate, and official. Your best resource for finding the most up-to-date requirements will be found on the BSA National Website. We purposely do not list prerequisites in order to encourage youth to follow the procedures in the Guide to Advancement and to Look At The Badge Requirements for the Merit Badge they wish to take, prior to arriving on site. If logs or journals are a part of the requirement you will need to bring them with in order for the prerequisite to be signed off. Photo documentation may work to if the items are too valuable or too large to bring. The Key, is to look at the requirements PRIOR to arriving at the event.
3 Merit Badge Classes Below is a listing of the merit badge classes that we will be offering this year at the MBU. Please be aware that not all requirements can or will be earned in a three-hour class period. Scouts will be instructed which requirements will need to be finished outside of the Merit Badge University. In many cases for a Scout to have their merit badge completely signed off, they will need to complete the requirements and schedule time with an approved Merit Badge Counselor. Only a registered Merit Badge Counselor, who is registered for that particular Merit Badge may sign off on the work. National requirements have changed on who may sign off on a Merit Badge. More information can be found in The Guide to Advancement. Starting in 2017, Units will now have on-line access to the requirements youth completed at the Merit Badge University. Instructions will be found in your information packet received at check-in Merit Badge University: Offered Merit Badges Citizenship in the Community Emergency Preparedness Programming Citizenship in the Nation Engineering Search and Rescue Citizenship in the World Finger Printing Scouting Heritage Communication Fire Safety Veterinary Medicine Crime Prevention Personal Management Dog Care Photography Electricity Physical Fitness ***NOTE*** Classes appearing in bold at the time of printing have confirmed Merit Badge Counselors Merit Badge University: Offered Leader Trainings Computer Lab Online independent trainings The computer lab will have limited accessibility for adults to take or renew any available online training. Merit Badge Classes have priority for these resources. Council Training has been asked to provide adult leader trainings. Check online to see classes as they are added. You will need to register to save your place. CPRHeartsaver Standard First Aid, CPR and AED - A layperson course based on the 2015 International Consensus Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiac Care (ECG), Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED. Approximate Time: minutes. Receive direction on how to perform CPR and use an AED during an emergency. Current information on injuries and illnesses: Core information for first aiders presented in a clear and straightforward formal New and updated content on the use of hemostatic dressings, application of tourniquets, administering epinephrine and more. Class size 6 per instructor. If additional certified help or another Instructor is found additional space may open up. $20.00 Fee Requires registration to participate. National Rifle Association: Range Safety Officer (RSO) Training Course content consists of RSO's roles and responsibilities, range standard operating procedures, range inspection and range rules, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, and Range Safety Briefings which include procedures to follow in the case of an emergency. RSO's who have successfully completed the course then have the ability to become a Chief Range Safety Officer, someone essential to training and supervising NRA Range Safety Officers and developing range standard operating procedures. How this helps with Scouting Upon complete of this course the RSO will be able to assist and is expected to assist at Camp Cornhusker during range activities as well as Council sponsored shooting event, like day camps and Cub Scout Day of Awesomeness. $30.00 Fee
4 Requires registration to participate. A Scout Is Prepared: What Should I Bring? The Field Uniform is the appropriate attire for this event for everyone attending. Some refer to it as Class A, an unofficial nickname for the scout uniforms. Youth inducted into the Order of the Arrow if you could bring your OA Sash with you we could use help directing Scouts and adult leaders to their class locations. Bring your Merit Badge Pamphlets, known as the Booklet, for help in discussions and researching information. You can purchase the Merit Badge books at the Scout Shop at the Outdoor Education Center (recommended). We will also have a small trading post selling Merit Badge Books at the MBU while supplies last. Be early if you will use this option. Items sell out fast. A pen and/or pencil to write with. Spares are great if you lose one. Paper for notes is advisable. Merit Badge Workbooks are a great tool and work great for notes and making lists or possibly writing a short report. Workbooks are not so great for requirements that ask to you discuss or show. Do not fall into the trap of filling out the entire workbook and believing your MBC will look at it quickly and sign you off. You still have more work to complete the requirements. Workbooks cannot be required to be used by a Counselor. Lunch: Bring a sack lunch or you may purchase lunch at the food court in the Kennedy Center. Instructions For Online Registration Get online at Cornhuskercouncil.org and follow the prompts for registration. Fill in the name of each Scout planning to attend and then select the top four choices for each Scout. Not all merit badges will be offered morning and afternoon sessions. Registration Fee: If received between January 11 Midnight February 28th, 2018 $10 For more information, feel free to contact: Position Name Phone Number OA Chapter Advisor Christy Wendland H: (402) C: (402) MBU Adult Advisor Scott Fitzwater H: (402) C: (402) Senior District Executive: Seven Feathers Sam Bates W: (402) W: (402) x 206
