ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Once accepted applicants must prvide: A valid Transprt Canada Marine Medical certificate stating fit fr sea service r fit fr sea service with limitatins. In the case f an applicant with a certificate fit fr sea service with limitatins, the applicant will be reviewed fr admissin. A list f designated physicians can be fund by ging t the Transprt Canada website ( and entering Designated Physicians int the search bx. EDUCATION & TRAINING C-perative Educatin - The cllege ffers a three year c-perative cadet training prgram cmbining the training listed belw and c-p sea time. A diplma is granted t graduates wh successfully cmplete the required curses and c-p sea time. Althugh sme Internatinal c-ps may be available, ur primary surce f c-p sea time is abard vessels sailing the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. This shuld nt limit the Internatinal pprtunities upn graduatin. Marine Emergency Duties Training Cadets will learn t fight fires, perate lifebats and rafts, and care fr injured persnnel thrugh MED s (STCW Basic Safety, Prficiency in Survival Craft, Advanced Fire Fighting, and Marine First Aid Curses). Simulatin Students learn t navigate ships r perate marine engines in the safety f an electrnic envirnment using state-f-the-art simulatrs Academic Curses Academic curses are develped t educate the students t the level f Captain r Chief Engineer: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Cmmunicatins, Engineering, Navigatin, Seamanship, Meterlgy, Thermdynamics, Naval Architecture, etc. EXPECTATIONS The marine prgrams are intensive. Students can expect t spend up t 30 hurs per week in classes and as many hurs studying. QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE All sea time must be spent abard a Transprt Canada apprved vessel Sea time graduatin Requirements: Marine Navigatin cadets: 365 days f sea time, divided amng three wrk terms Marine Engineering cadets: 210 days f sea time, divided amng 2 wrk terms REQUIREMENTS & DOCUMENTATION Birth Certificate (Yu must turn 18 prir t the first c-p sea term) Candidate Dcumentatin Number (CDN). This is an identificatin number that fllws yu thrughut yur marine career, and is required in rder t get a Marine Medical (see belw). In rder t apply fr a CDN, yu must bring tw (2) dcuments (ne as prf f identity and ne as prf f citizenship) t yur lcal Transprt Canada ffice. 4 WHAT TO EXPECT ON CO-OP Expect t wrk hard and pay yur dues. If yu d this, yur supervising fficers are mre likely t prvide yu with a quality learning experience. Expect t be away frm hme fr lng perids f time. Yu will be n bard fr a minimum f fur mnths and a maximum f eight (as a Navigatin cadet) Expect t be ut f tuch with family and lved nes. There is a lack f Internet access and cell phne access is unreliable. Expect t spend at least fur hurs per day wrking n yur lg bk. This is in additin t yur n-duty shifts. Yu will learn mre abut yur lg bk prir t ging ut n c-p. Expect t wrk shifts. Yu will be wrking nights and weekends. Yu will wrk with sme wnderful peple wh will d their best t help yu learn; hwever expect t encunter sme difficult peple. Just like any ther jb, there will be peple yu are wrking with that yu wn t like. Remember that life as a cadet des nt necessarily reflect life as an fficer. Expect drug and alchl testing while n bard. The Great Lakes shipping industry has zer tlerance fr drugs and alchl. Expect an intense, challenging and rewarding living and wrking experience while n-bard ship. This is nt just a jb, but a life style chice. TRANSPORT CANADA LICENSES Transprt Canada sets standards fr training and certificatin based n bth internatinal and dmestic requirements Gergian Cllege is apprved by Transprt Canada t deliver educatin and training t cadets Upn successful cmpletin f the educatin and c-p training, students are required t write Transprt Canada examinatins fr either a Watchkeeping Mate Certificate fr Navigatrs r a 4 th Class Engineer Certificate fr Engineers Gergian Cllege can prvide the students many exemptins fr Transprt Canada exams, prvided marks f 70% r higher are maintained n certain subjects The licenses issued by Transprt Canada are internatinally recgnized and qualify the hlders t wrk n many different ships anywhere in the wrld. In the winter mnths, hckey fans may wish t attend the OHL Owen Sund Attack r the Owen Sund Greys junir hckey games. Students with a lve f the utdrs will enjy the prximity t dwn-hill skiing and snwbarding (40 minutes t Blue Muntain r Talisman) and lcal crss cuntry skiing and snwsheing trails. There are als a number f lcal snwmbile trails. Ice fishing pprtunities abund n the many lcal lakes and, mst years, n Gergian Bay itself. During the warmer mnths, students can enjy the lcal beaches at Kels and Hibu r drive t ne f the wrld s lngest freshwater sand beaches (30 minutes t Sauble, r 50 minutes t Wasaga). Many lcal rivers als ffer excellent fishing, caneing and kayaking pprtunities.
