Dick Finn will be bringing in Brats, buns and all the fixins. Feb. Chapter Mtg Presentation By: Jim O Connor Howard Schlei will be joining us for our February 6, 2017 meeting. Howard has developed a presentation covering Operation Vengeance during WW II. Operation Vengeance was the American military operation to kill Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto of the Imperial Japanese Navy on April 18, 1943, during the Solomon Islands campaign in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy, was killed on Bougainville Island when his transport bomber aircraft was shot down by United States Army Air Forces fighter aircraft operating from Kukum Field on Guadalcanal. This attack was made possible by US Cryptographers breaking the Japanese code and then intercepting a message announcing Yamamoto s trip to Bougainville. This is a fascinating bit of WW II history. Make sure you don t miss this meeting. Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, a few hours before his death, saluting Japanese naval pilots at Rabaul, April 18, 1943 Page 1 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter
2 January Meeting Commemorative Air Force VOLUME 4 ISSUE 2 After a lot of discussion relating to making our meetings more interesting and generally more appealing to the members, we Instead of asking someone to bring snacks to the meeting, we are trying out actually having a simple dinner starting at 6:00 pm. For the inaugural dinner, Keith Lee brought sloppy Joe s and chips along with dough nuts and cookies for desert. I tasted great and the concept was well received. For our next meeting, Dick Finn will grill some brats and bring them in with all the fixins. Jim O Connor and Pete Vercouteron are planning out a new year of programs for the Chapter. The first two are already set and we actually were able to enjoy the first one at the January meeting. This was a presentation n by Garry Otto from the CAF (Commemorative Air Force). Gary is the Wing Leader (or SCG-Supreme Commander of the Galaxy) of the Wisconsin Wing of the CAF based in Waukesha. The Headquarters of the CAF is now located in Dallas, Texas. They have members in every state and 28 foreign countries. In 26 states and four foreign countries, their members have joined together and formed units to foster camaraderie and, in many cases, actively support one or more of the classic military aircraft operated by the CAF. The CAF was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans. CAF's fleet, known as the CAF Ghost Squadron, recreates, reminds and reinforces the lessons learned from the defining moments in American military aviation history. The Wing owns two Warbirds pictured at the left is a PT-26 and at the right is their SNJ-5. They are now looking to acquire a third plane for the Wing. Page 2 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter
3 January Meeting Commemorative Air Force The Commemorative Air Force has VOLUME 4 ISSUE aircraft valued at $50,000, are flying. Over 5000 hours last year The CAF has 75 units comprised of approximately 13,000 members in 5 countries. The Wing runs a large schedule throughout the year with multiple events every month. To get all this done they rely o a large group of staff members. The following members have taken a lead role Wing Leader (SCG): Gary Otto Executive Officer: Mark Shilobrit Adjutant: Tim Raupp Operations Officer: Mike Woods Finance/PX Officer: John Kmet Safety Officer: Dave Cook Maintenance Officer: Stan Babicz Public Relations Officer: Steve Betzler Special Affairs Officer: Diane Otto Website Officer: Tim Raupp Historian/Museum Curator: Alex Ohde Newsletter Editor/Publisher: Alex Ohde Recruiting/ Member Retention Off.: Tom McDermott In addition to dues, they operate a PX, or sales tent at many of their events. There, they offer caps, shirts and other souvenirs. And, of course they are always looking to sign up new members. If any of you are interested in joining this active group of Warbird enthusiasts, give Gary Otto a heads up at gotto@wi.rr.com. Our team of Officers is working to set up an Open House at the Skyport on May 6, The Wisconsin Wing of the CAF has told us they will attend and, weather permitting, bring their planes. 4 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 2 FAA Issues General Aviation Medical Rule Some have called it the "Holy Grail" to resuscitating General Aviation... and after a long, long wait, it's finally here. The FAA has issued a final rule that allows general aviation pilots to fly without holding an FAA medical certificate as long as they meet certain requirements outlined in Congressional legislation. The United States has the world s most robust general aviation community, and we re committed to continuing to make it safer and more efficient to become a private pilot, said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. The BasicMed rule will keep our pilots safe but will simplify our regulations and keep general aviation flying affordable. Until now, the FAA has required private, recreational, and student pilots to meet the requirements of and hold a third class medical certificate. They are required to complete an online application and undergo a physical examination with an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner. A medical certificate is valid for five years for pilots under age 40 and two years for pilots age 40 and over. Beginning on May 1, pilots may take advantage of the regulatory relief in the BasicMed rule or opt to continue to use their FAA medical certificate. Under BasicMed, a pilot will be required to complete a medical education course, undergo a medical examination every four years, and comply with aircraft and operating restrictions. For example, pilots using BasicMed cannot operate an aircraft with more than six people onboard and the aircraft must not weigh more than 6,000 pounds. A pilot flying under the BasicMed rule must: possess a valid driver s license; have held a medical certificate at any time after July 15, 2006; have not had the most recently held medical certificate revoked, suspended, or withdrawn; have not had the most recent application for airman medical certification completed and denied; have taken a medical education course within the past 24 calendar months; have completed a comprehensive medical examination with a physician within the past 48 months; be under the care of a physician for certain medical conditions; have been found eligible for special issuance of a medical certificate for certain specified mental health, neurological, or cardiovascular conditions, when applicable; consent to a National Driver Register check; fly only certain small aircraft, at a limited altitude and speed, and only within the United States; and not fly for compensation or hire. The July 15, 2016 FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016 directed the FAA to issue or revise regulations by January 10, 2017, to ensure that an individual may operate as pilot in command of a certain aircraft without having to undergo the medical certification process under Part 67 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, if the pilot and aircraft meet certain prescribed conditions outlined in the Act. The FAA and the general aviation community have a strong track record of collaboration. The agency is working with nonprofit organizations and the not-for-profit general aviation stakeholder groups to develop online medical courses that meet the requirements of the Act. 5 VOLUME 4 ISSUE Christmas Party As in past years we celebrated our Christmas party by attending the annual EAA Wright Brothers Banquet on December 9th. They had a huge crowd this year, no doubt due to Gene Kranz being selected as the speaker. At one point it appeared we would not even be able to be seated on the main floor of the Eagle Hanger but up on the balcony. Things worked out well though and they were able to place additional tables to accommodate us. The downside was that we were seated at the rear. I m sure most of you remember that Gene Kranz was the Flight Director for the Apollo 13 mission. After an explosion in the Service Module, Gene s team took the lead to bring the astronauts back home.for their contributions, Gene and his team, along with the astronauts were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Among his many contributions, Gene is now a retired NASA Flight Director and manager, a former flight engineer on a restored B-17, a lifetime member of the EAA and has been inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Gene, in a fantastic presentation, took us from his ealy days as a military pilot through the details of the Apollo 13 mission. At the conclusion of his presentation, he donated his old Korean War fighter helmet to the EAA. Many thanks to John Zorn who coordinated this event for our chapter. John has taken the led role for many years now. Page 5 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter

8 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 2 AIRCRAFT SPRUCE PURCHASES POBEREZNY HOME I received the following from Trace Blakely. Very Interesting! Aircraft Spruce and Specialty has taken ownership and officially closed on the house and property owned for 25 years by Paul and Audrey Poberezny, located on Waupun Road just east of Poberezny Road. The Irwin family, which owns Aircraft Spruce, is committed to retaining the Poberezny legacy of the property and will make it available to EAA for tours and special events. Aircraft Spruce will also use the property for its purposes during AirVenture week. Steve Taylor has been working with the new owners and recommending local contractors to update some of the non-public living areas in the house. It s expected that the facility will be ready for public use later this year. Aviation Quotes: Page 8 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter
9 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 2 Interesting Stuff on the Web: COOL STUFF A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Away By: Dick Finn Back in the 1990 s when we were living in Chicago we owned a small cabin on Lake Winnebago. While I was on vacation enjoying the Wisconsin lifestyle I got a call that I was needed back at work. Rather than drive down for the day I rented a Cessna 150 from the Skyport and flew down. I landed at Meigs Field and walked over to the office. At the end of the day I flew back. It was a beautiful day with great scenery to enjoy. Several years later I was working at CNA Insurance. One morning I came in and looked out the window at Meigs. The runway had large X s plowed into it. After not making headway on closing the field, Mayor Daley decided to take action on his own to close it down. Its now an underused park. I recently came across this business card in my logbook. It brought back some nice memories. Page 9 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter
