1 NORWELA COUNCIL UNIT PROGRAM PLANNING CALENDAR

2 COUNCIL SERVICES This calendar is to be used as one tool in the process of developing your unit s annual program plan. If you need more copies, it can be found on the Council s web page at: HOW TO USE THIS PROGRAM CALENDAR 1. Schedule an Annual Planning Meeting for your unit using the materials received at the June Program Planning Roundtable. 2. Agree on the monthly themes and special activities for the year ahead. Set the dates for your unit s activities. Be certain to coordinate your plans with those of your chartered partner. 3. Be certain that leadership responsibilities for your activities are assigned. Two-Deep Leadership is required for all Scouting activities. 4. Be certain to review your Pack, Troop, Team, or Crew requirements so that your program planning may qualify your unit to receive the Journey to Excellence Unit Award for These requirements may be downloaded at: ytoexcellence.aspx MEMBERSHIP SERVICES All new charter & membership applications, charter renewals, additional enrollments and required fees are processed by our Registration Department then transmitted to the National Office. 3 UNIT FINANCING INFORMATION Here are some simple suggestions you will want to keep in mind if your Pack, Troop, Team, Crew or Post plans on a money earning project, (more detailed information is available upon request). 1. A UNIT SHOULD MAKE NO PUBLIC SOLICITATION OF FUNDS. THE ONLY LEGAL BODY AUTHORIZED TO DO SO IS THE NORWELA COUNCIL, INC. 2. The Unit Budget Plan is the best way to provide badges, insignia, BOYS LIFE and reregistration for your unit. 3. Before you start a money earning project, be sure to file a Unit Money Earning Application with the District Finance Committee. 4. Popcorn Sales in the fall is the only council board approved fund-raising projects. Scouts may wear their uniform when selling popcorn. Unit Money Earning Applications may be downloaded at: The BSA s COMMITMENT TO SAFETY We want you to know that the safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees is an important part of the Scouting experience. Youth develop traits of citizenship, character, fitness, and leadership during age-appropriate events when challenged to move beyond their normal comfort level, and discover their abilities. This is appropriate when risks are identified and mitigated. The Scouting program, as contained in our handbooks and literature, integrates many safety features. However, no policy or procedure will replace the review and vigilance of trusted adults and leaders at the point of program execution. Commit yourself to creating a safe and healthy environment by: 1. Knowing and executing the BSA program as contained in our publications 2. Planning tours, activities, and events with vigilance using the tools provided 3.Setting the example for safe behavior and equipment use during program 4.Engaging and educating all participants in discussions about hazards and risks 5.Reporting incidents in a timely manner INSURANCE The Norwela Council carries a general liability insurance policy to protect institutions and Scout leaders from damage suits. This coverage extends to groups who allow Scouts to use their facilities. Leaders need to keep in mind: 1. This is liability protection not medical. 2. All precautions and care must be exercised by leaders. 3. Report all accidents immediately to the Service Center. The Norwela Council also provides sickness and accident insurance coverage for all participants during Scouting Events. This insurance is secondary coverage to any insurance the individual or family may have and only covers approved, appropriate, and Scouting-Event related illnesses or injuries. Because of the importance of these insurance coverages it is essential for your protection that: (1) all boys are registered, (2) unit charters do not expire, and (3) leaders have completed Youth Protection Training, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, or any other needed / required training.
