SECTION II. INTRODUCTION SHOW Slide 1 (STRM) Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio is: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 5 mins Media: Slide Presentation Motivator Terminal Learning Objective Safety Requirements Risk Assessment Level Evaluation Instructional Lead-In This will be the last opportunity (at least until you ship from MEPS/Direct Ship Site (DSS)) to review the forms necessary for you to ship to Basic Combat Training (BCT) and/or Advanced Individual Training (AIT). The fact that we have gone over these forms each drill should emphasize to you the importance of the forms to ensure you are Administratively Correct upon arrival to the Reception Station. As we cross check the forms for the last time, please let me or one of the other cadre members know if you are missing any documents, or if there have been any changes since the last drill. If you do not have any of the forms we will go over, immediately raise your hand. SHOW Slide 2 (Terminal Learning Objective) Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements. At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will: Action: Conditions: Standards: Receive Pre-Shipper Brief and Counseling Given RSP Pre-Ship Packet Checklist, BAH Addendum, Soldier Pre-ship Counseling, and final pre-ship instructions Guarantee 100% accuracy of the Shipping Packet Conduct a safety brief prior to training as needed and IAW unit and installation policies. Low - Risk Assessment to be produced locally IAW FM 5-19, August None There is so much to be learned during BCT that you will not have the time to make corrections or adjustments to your paperwork, and the lack of any paperwork could easily affect things like your pay, your family, your promotion, or your overall attitude at training. If you are a STO-II, we will need to ensure you have all of your required documents and items from BCT. Even if all your paperwork was correct during our last check, let s go through it one more time. 3

SECTION III. PRESENTATION 1. Learning Step / Activity 1. Review RSP Pre-Ship Packet Checklist Method of Instruction: Practical Exercise (Performance) Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 20 mins Media: None Before starting, have each student place their photo-id which must be issued by a State or Federal agency, military ID card, and social Security Card on top of their packet (only if not already in the packet). Once you come to that particular identification have them put it away. Refer students to the Student Handouts and the RSP Forms you have printed from Vulcan and begin with the RSP Pre-ship Packet Checklist. Ensure each student has a copy of their respective shipping packet before them. You might say something to the effect of DO NOT OPEN YOUR PACKETS UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO. When ready, have students open the packet and place it on the table or desk in front of them. Start in the order presented on the checklist and have each student hold up each form (as appropriate) as you call for them. ALL PACKETS SHOULD BE COMPLETE AND IN THE ORDER PRESENTED. Have students refer to Student Handout #1 so they are familiar with the most important forms inside their Shipper Packet. After each topic or form, ask if there have been any changes since the last drill to that particular item. COVER BAH Addendum for Soldiers without Dependents. 2. Learning Step / Activity 2. Review Pre-Ship Packet Counseling Method of Instruction: Practical Exercise (Performance) Instructor to Student Ration: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: None Refer students to RSP Form As with the Pre-Ship Packet Checklist go over each line item of the Pre-Ship Counseling and ensure the Soldiers have initialed each block and signed the counseling as appropriate. Remind students to refer to Student Handout #1 so they familiar with the most important forms inside their Shipper Packet. 3. Learning Step / Activity 3. Conduct Showdown Inspection Method of Instruction: Practical Exercise (Performance) Instructor to Student Ration: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: None IAW Local SOP conduct a showdown inspection for all STO 2 Soldiers that are shipping to AIT. 4. Learning Step / Activity 4. Frequently Asked Questions Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ration: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: Slide Presentation 4

Refer students to Student Handout #2, and explain that these are the most often asked questions by Soldiers prior to and at the active duty reception stations. The answers to almost every one of these questions are set in stone. To garner class participation, ask for volunteers to read a question, then pause, and then select a student to answer. Typically this exercise creates additional questions, therefore be prepared to keep the topics concise, or make time for additional questions during a break. Answering the questions is the perfect time to interject your own thoughts and or suggestions. SHOW Slide 3 (FAQs, 1 6) QUESTION: How long is Basic Combat Training (BCT)? ANSWER: BCT is approximately 10 weeks long, not including time spent at Reception Battalion or as a hold under at Physical Training and Rehabilitation Platoon (PTRP) or Fitness Training Unit (FTU). QUESTION: Could anything cause my training to be longer? ANSWER: Yes, being recycled as a new start or held over for missed training, marksmanship, physical, or academic failure could lengthen your time in training. QUESTION: What is New Start/RECYCLE? ANSWER: New Start/Recycle is the process of transferring a soldier from one training unit to another training unit that hasn t progressed as far in the training cycle. QUESTION: What is a STO soldier? ANSWER: Split Training Option (STO) soldiers enlist as high school juniors. From enlistment through BCT they are STO 1 s (STO Phase 1). After BCT they are known as STO 2 s (STO Phase 2). As STO 2 s, they return home to attend their senior year of high school until the following summer, when they go to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) to learn their MOS. (College students can also do the Split Training Option) QUESTION: What if I m a STO trainee and become a New Start holdover? ANSWER: Have your Drill Sergeant contact the TRADOC Liaison office immediately so that potential conflicts can be resolved with the appropriate command. QUESTION: What will happen to my Advanced Individual Training (AIT) start date if I am recycled while in Basic Combat Training? ANSWER: Assignment personnel will automatically schedule a new start date for AIT, and either you or your company should notify the TRADOC Liaison Office. SHOW Slide 4 (FAQ, 7 12) QUESTION: What happens if I become physically unable to train? ANSWER: Temporary problems may be handled with a code and a profile from a physician. Permanent injury may result in some type of administrative discharge or reclassification into another MOS. QUESTION: What if I fail my end-of-cycle test (EOCT)? ANSWER: Failure of any mandatory testing will be repeated. A multiple failure may result in new start, reclassification, or discharge. You must see the TRADOC Liaison for counseling. The choice will be made by a number of people who have your best interest in mind. QUESTION: Can I take leave between Basic and AIT? 5

ANSWER: No. Leave is normally authorized only if your AIT is 26 weeks or longer, and your orders authorize it. If you are still on active duty during the end-ofyear holiday season, you will be allowed to take leave at that time as determined by your commander. QUESTION: When can I go home? ANSWER: When you complete your training or are released by proper authority. QUESTION: What if there is an emergency at home? ANSWER: All emergencies should be reported to and verified by the American Red Cross. Your Commander will then be notified and will inform you so that you can take emergency leave if it is authorized. Travel will be at your own expense. QUESTION: How do I return home after graduation from training? ANSWER: The Army will provide return transportation to your home, or you may opt for a cash settlement for privately owned vehicle (POV) travel. If you choose POV travel, the request must be done at least one week prior to graduation, and YOU will have to complete the paperwork at your unit to be reimbursed. SHOW Slide 5 (FAQ 13 16) QUESTION: What if I live with my parents and they re moving or have moved to another state? ANSWER: See your TRADOC Liaison and he or she will make arrangements to send you to the new state. QUESTION: What if my graduation date will get me home too late for school, college or work? ANSWER: Split Training Option (STO) Phase 1 soldiers are the ONLY soldiers with a mandatory return date (MRD). All others will remain until training is completed. QUESTION: Can I change my Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)? ANSWER: No, an MOS can only be changed if you are physically or academically unable, or on orders from your higher headquarters. (The Guard has programmed you into a training seat for the job you chose and changing your MOS might keep another Soldier from getting the job he or she chose.) QUESTION: What if my orders indicate an MOS different from what I enlisted for at the MEPS? ANSWER: An order may be changed only when an error is verified by the TRADOC Liaison Office. SHOW Slide 6 (FAQ 17 20) QUESTION: Can I change my enlistment option to the Split Training Option (STO)? ANSWER: Enlistment options are made at the time of enlistment but in certain cases they may be renegotiated at the discretion of State Command. QUESTION: Can I join the Active Army or another active service? ANSWER: Not while you re still in BCT or AIT. After you complete both, you must return home and attend drill for six months. Your unit commander can release you to see an active duty recruiter. QUESTION: Can I go to Airborne or Air Assault training? ANSWER: Only if you are assigned to that type of unit and it must be indicated on your orders. Otherwise, see your unit Readiness NCO when you get home. 6

QUESTION: When will I be paid again? ANSWER: After your pay advance at Reception Battalion, your next pay will be received in 2-4 weeks. After that, all pay will be received at mid-month and end-ofmonth. DO NOT close your accounts until thirty (30) days after you leave active duty, so that your accumulated leave and travel pay can be posted to your account. SHOW Slide 7 (FAQ 21 25) QUESTION: My home unit is deployed. What s going to happen to me? ANSWER: You ll return home you will first report to your RSP for Gold Phase. Then you will report to the Rear Detachment Commander/First Sergeant. If you want to deploy with your unit, you can volunteer if the unit is still taking volunteers, or you can volunteer for another unit. QUESTION: If I deploy, how long will I be activated? ANSWER: By law, activation is for up to two years. Usually, you re activated for one year. QUESTION: How can I see the TRADOC Liaison NCO? ANSWER: If your Unit Training NCO can t solve your problem, have your Drill Sergeant make an appointment with the TRADOC Liaison NCO through the Unit Training NCO. Do NOT call or go to the Liaison Office without going through your Drill Sergeant first. Use the chain of command. QUESTION: Will I have free time during training? ANSWER: During training, passes are granted at the discretion of the unit commander for specific periods of time. QUESTION: Will I be able to call home from BCT? ANSWER: You re required to make one phone call to your family within the first 72 hours of being at BCT. After that, you won t have much time to make calls. 5. Learning Step / Activity 5. Between Basic and Advanced Individual Training Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 10 mins Media: Slide Presentation SHOW Slide 8 (Turn in Basic Combat Training Packet) Place heavy emphasis on the importance of bringing all Basic Combat Training personnel files and papers with them when reporting to the RSP upon return from Basic Combat Training within three days of completion. If the students, for some reason are unable to physically turn in their paperwork, they are to call their RSP unit immediately. Some, but not all of the papers/forms are listed on Slide 3. The following slide provides general information as to what will occur when the STO Soldiers return from Basic Combat Training. Use your personal experiences as a student and as a trainer to bring a contemporary interest to the training. SHOW Slide 9 (Between Basic and Advanced Individual Training) a. Leadership Training. In your own words tell the students what leadership techniques they will receive. 7

(1) More will be expected of them. They are now Basic Combat trained Soldiers, not pre-iet Soldiers. (2) The STO Soldiers will be looked up to by initial RSP students and they will be expected to set the standard as the RSP cadre did for them. (3) As assistant instructors they will be held to a higher standard. (4) Will serve as mentors for new RSP Soldiers. (5) MUST embody the seven Army Values and Warrior Ethos in their daily lives, both on and off duty. (6) Will receive approximately 22 hours of additional training to build upon the training received in Basic Combat Training. b. Career Management Training. (1) Career Management Planning. (2) Increased leadership. (3) Increased responsibility. (4) Setting goals through an introduction to career opportunities and the paths/methods to achieve them. c. Mentor Training. (1) How to lead by being a model Soldier. (2) How to mentor using learned skills (from experience and training). (3) How mentorship and team development run hand in hand. d. Counseling Techniques. (1) Behavioral (usually on the spot type corrections). (2) Developmental counseling (professional growth or performance counseling). (3) How to prepare for counseling. (4) What to expect during a counseling session. e. Fitness and Nutrition Training. (1) Six hours of advanced fitness and nutrition training. (2) Monitoring fitness standards in preparation for AIT. 10 SECTION IV. ASK FOR QUESTIONS AND SUMMARY Method of Instruction: Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 5 mins Media: None a. Ask students if they have any questions. b. Answer all questions or agree to get back to students with a complete or appropriate answer. SUMMARY Resolve any student issues, and emphasize the importance of the practical exercise. Use the contemporary environment to explain the difficulties caused by not being Mentally Prepared, Administratively Correct, and Physically Fit. For instance, the following is any everyday occurrence at any reception battalion in the United States Army. If a Soldier arrives with an inadequate or incomplete packet, he or she is held back in the reception station waiting for appropriate information to catch up with them. In the mean time, their battle buddies have moved on and they are given tasks to assist others in shipping off to BCT. It is at this point that a bad attitude begins to develop, then the Soldier does something stupid (slipping off to the PX, or sneaking a cigarette, or inappropriate behavior with a person of the opposite gender). As the situation escalates, the Soldier becomes increasingly irritated and belligerent, to a point where separation action is begun. Once it gets to this point it is extremely difficult to stop, yet the Soldier is still assigned to the Reception Battalion awaiting discharge orders while his or her battle buddy approaches graduation. This is not meant to threaten you, but to let you know that this is almost an everyday occurrence at any of the Reception Battalions. DON T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU! 10
