15 Tips for Submitting Great Award Nominations 1. Begin the process early, before the end of the year. 2. Read the Adult Recognitions Manual, and determine which award is most appropriate for your candidate. Consider his/her service in terms of how he/she demonstrates the Girl Scout Promise and Law. 3. Find out as much information as possible about your candidate s Girl Scouts volunteer activities. If you think the volunteer deserves this award but do not know everything she/he has done in the past, please contact your Service Unit Manager or the Board Recognitions Coordinator at x109 or recognitions@girlscouts-ssc.org. We are happy to help. 4. Nomination forms and Letters of Endorsement are found on our website at Adult Recognitions. Click on the name of the award you wish to submit, copy the form, to your computer, complete and print it. You may also copy sample Letters of Endorsement. 5. Please remember that the Service Unit Manager or Recognitions Committee may only know your candidate from what they read in these letters and on your nomination form. Provide specific examples of the volunteer s service, including dates of events, description of special activities, and relate them to the Girl Scout Promise and Law. (See letter next page.) Why do you think the volunteer s service is exceptional? What was the impact? Who benefited? 6. Ensure that those writing letters of endorsement also supply specific details about your candidate. (See samples in this booklet.) The nominator may not also write a letter of endorsement. 7. Once you have your completed nomination form and letters of endorsement, please submit them to your service Unit Manager or National and Council nominations to: Recognitions Coordinator Girl Scouts of Silver Sage 1410 Etheridge Lane Boise, ID The deadline is February 1 st. Please don t wait until the last minute to submit your nomination.

16 ADULT RECOGNITIONS Advice on Letters of Endorsement The Service Unit Manager or Recognitions Committee may not know your nominee well. They accept or reject a nominee strictly based on what they read in the nomination form and letters of endorsement. It is important that the endorsements be specific, well-written and legible. Consider carefully who you ask to write the letters of endorsement, and ensure that your writer knows the nominee well enough to support the nomination with specific details. Give the writers a copy of the Letter of Endorsement form as soon as possible, leaving enough time for the nominator to review the letter and submit with the nomination packet by the deadline. EXAMPLE: Mary has been nominated for the Appreciation Pin, a Board-Approved National Award. The letter on the left would cause her nomination to be rejected while the endorsement on the right secures the award for her. Because her service involves more than one geographic area, the award could be elevated to an Honor Pin. Poor This example is too vague. Mary is a wonderful person. She is always there when I need her. She is very encouraging and always keeps the needs of her girls in mind. Whenever any of us have a question, we know we can call Mary. I don t know what we would do without her. Mary has three children and is very active in her church. She sets a wonderful example for her girls and the community. I have known Mary for years and she is most deserving of this award. Good This example lists specific actions which exceed Mary s responsibilities as Troop Leader. Mary has served as a Troop Leader for four years from 2012 through the current year. In addition to working with her Junior troop, she demonstrates Courage and Confidence by planning events, not only for our local troops, but she also supports the Girl Scout Mission by advertising to include non-girl Scouts from surrounding areas (one or more geographic areas). This year, she organized the following events: 1. Trick or Treat for Hunger 2. Toasty Toes Sock Drive 3. Spring-Fling Picnic Pickup Because her events are so well attended, Mary was able to help start three new troops this year. In addition, about 90% of existing troops participated in the events. The girls were so happy to donate food and warm socks to those in need (Friendly and Helpful, Considerate and Caring, making the world a better place). Mary also fills in when the Service Unit Manager cannot attend meetings (being a Sister to a Girl Scout), has assisted at school organizational meetings and has written four Girl Scout publicity articles for our county, which is above and beyond what is normally expected from her position.

17 Letter of Endorsement for Award Nomination (Please submit this form or your own letter) Nominee: Award: 1. Please provide specific examples of how this nominee has provided outstanding service which supports the Girl Scout Mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character who live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. 2. Why do you think this nominee s service was exceptional that is, why it went above and beyond what is expected for a volunteer in this position? (This is critical awards are made to recognize exceptional service). Submitted by: (We may contact you if further information is needed.) Name: Relationship: Best Phone: Please return the endorsement letter to the person submitting the nomination.
