4 EMAC Background Hurricane Andrew Emergency Response Teams Assess damages, evacuate and care for the injured, begin to reestablish infrastructure Clear roads of debris, restore electricity & water/sewage facilities Establish temporary housing for the homeless Coordinate relief efforts from within and outside the state EMAC Background Hurricane Katrina Resulted in more than 1800 deaths,700 missing. Damage estimate at $81 billion, costliest hurricane damage in U.S. history. 3 million people without power, for several weeks. Strong winds ripped roof off the Superdome, occupied as a shelter of last resort. 1.2 million people ordered to evacuate the Gulf coast.
