4 4 THE POST REPORTER AUGUST 2017 Legion Family VETERAN VICTOR & VETERAN VICTORIA BENEFITTING AMERICA S VETERANS I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Legion Family at post 116. On June 24th my Dad passed away and at that time you find there's so much to do in a short amount of time. Well, the Post helped my family with the use of the Hall, and what the Ladies of the Auxiliary did to help my family is beyond words Thank You so very much. You are an Awesome group of Ladies!!! The Riders are packing their gear and will be hitting the road for the 12th annual Legacy Scholarship ride; lets hope they have a safe and successful ride. The Bulldogs really put it to the other teams this year. They came out on top and finished it off by Winning the Championship. Congratulations Bulldogs! We finally had a group ride in July, a little late for our first, but a good ride never the less. We will be getting an new look in November which will be the 5th anniversary of this column. We hope you are finding this column to be informative. It will be our objective to keep things relevant and informative for our veterans and their families. Editors note: Mark has had some personal issues and was unable to provide a column this month. It is his goal to be back on track in September. Sincerely and Respectfully, Mark Simon thespider121@gmail.com KEEP ALERT! 5 THE POST REPORTER AUGUST THE POST DEADLINE The deadline for the September Newsletter is: Friday, August 21st Please your article or information to me on or before the deadline date. Thanks to the students of The Forbush School at Hannah More who stuffed and folded the June Reporter, and Michelle Kremen who addressed them, so I could get it to the Post Office on time. Also thanks to Squid for keeping the mailing labels up to date. (It s a difficult task) I will be addressing the Newsletter on Sunday, July 30 at 12:30 p.m. If you can be there, your help will be appreciated! Doug Lawrence (Editor) (home) (cell) dougl315@verizon.net Boys State/ Boys Nation At Boys State/ Nation, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. As many of you know, I spent a week at McDaniel College in June as counselor for Maryland Boys State. Boys State is a program where boys who have just finished their junior year in high school can spend "a week that can shape a lifetime". We tell them they will learn more in this one week than they will learn in three years of high school. From what I have learned from boys at the end of their week, is that we told them the truth. Boys Nation is going on as I write this article. It is happening at Marymount College in Arlington, Virginia. There are two boys representing each of 49 departmental Boys State programs. One of their requirements to attend is to write a bill to be presented to the legislature to be considered by Boys Nation. Let me tell you what an honor it is to work with these young men at this stage of their life. They are our future. This program tells me our future is in good hands. During this year's Boys State program, I spoke to one of our Senators from last year. He was to report to the Naval Academy the following week. Being involved in this program makes me proud to be a Legionnaire! If you know a boy in his junior year in high school, who might be interested, please have him contact his school counselor (or me) about attending Maryland Boys State beginning on Father s Day next June. Doug Lawrence Boys State Counselor, Past Post Commander The 100 Club will restart when # s are sold Reserve your numbers now 2 Winners each week for 10 weeks! Still $20 per number. Fridays at the Post Don t forget the SAL s Ace of Diamonds precedes the 100 Club at 8:00pm (The Pot is growing!)
