Folks from the Chester County Fire Marshal s office, the Chester County Sheriff's K-9 unit, Brandywine Hospital Medic 93, Chester County Center, and JeffSTAT visited the cadets to offer an overview of first responder career opportunities. In addition to the demonstrations, cadets participated in training activities as it relates to job duties they can perform as a Junior Firefighter. Some notable trainings include: knot tying, handling charged fire hose lines, fire extinguishers, wild land firefighting, water supply/fire hydrants and hands only CPR. This year, the cadets took a field trip to Philadelphia to visit the Fireman s Hall Museum, Philadelphia International Airport Fire Rescue and the Marine Unit of Philadelphia Fire Department located on the Delaware River. Each year, a cadet is honored with the Camp Cadet Award. This years honoree was Hannah Matlack of Glenmore Fire Company. Hannah stood out during the week with her willingness to learn and always willing to help out with anything the instructors needed help with. Camp concluded with a graduation ceremony as well as an equipment display, featuring various Fire, Police and EMS organizations throughout the county. A big thank you goes out to all the folks who volunteered their time during this week to make camp such a memorable experience. 7 CISM Corner with Chaplain Jerry Schwartz The Things We See By, Chaplain Jerry Schwartz This past month our Peer Support Team assisted our county's dedicated First Responders on several critical incidents that sadly involved the loss of young children. These are some of the toughest calls to deal with and it becomes especially troubling when we have children or grandchildren of our own about the same age. Our mind takes pictures that we have real difficulty ever forgetting! I can still recall, over 35 years ago, while working as a Captain in the Baltimore Fire Department responding to an early morning dwelling fire on the west side of the city. We arrived on the scene to find a two story middle of the row dwelling with heavy fire conditions on the first floor and heavy smoke pouring from the second floor windows. Crews made their way into the first floor, while my crew proceeded to the second floor by way of ground ladders. As we made our way into the upstairs bedroom we sadly found two young lifeless children still in their beds. This kind of stress and trauma that comes with these difficult calls can impact any responder at any time. Even the well-trained and seasoned responder can be impacted by the incidents they experience! The first, and often biggest, obstacle to any of us as first responders in getting help is actually being convinced that we need it. It can be extremely difficult for someone who has been trained and dedicated to helping others accept the fact that they themselves might need help. After all, first responders are the first ones called in times of crisis! As one firefighter/emt told me, "We are the first ones to help others and yet the last ones to help ourselves!" Signs you might need help may include, but not limited to the following; poor sleep, unexplained irritability, moodiness, increased alcohol or substance use, marriage and family/relationship issues, a change in eating habits, and vague physical ailments. If left untreated, these symptoms can intensify and evolve into depression, post- traumatic stress disorder, and/or even suicidal thoughts, but help is available! Many times, a simple phone conversation or meeting with a Peer Support Team member can begin to bring about a positive change! Don't hesitate to make the call! TANK TRUCK TRAINING 101 The Chester County HazMAT Team conducted training to have team members become familiar with how a tank truck operates under normal conditions. Buck Run Transport, Parkesburg, PA provided a DOT 406 and a DOT 407 trailer, plus their safety manager Paul Kilbride worked with Tony Przychodzien to provide the training. The training consisted of how the tanks are constructed, the locations of the emergency shut off locations and how the valves operate under normal conditions. Reviewing these components gave the members Need to talk? Contact us: Facebook: "Chester County CISM Peer Support Team" cism@chesco.org Phone: Center Supervisor time to ask what would happen during a rollover, traffic accident or if the trailer was at a fixed location loading or unloading. Pictures of the components were taken and will be used in the training protocol when the team responds to these types of tankers. 7 HazMAT Team Training
