7 Psychological Health Service members returning from deployment may be at increased risk for some mental health outcomes including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), alcohol/substance abuse, and suicide attempt/ideation Navy Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) For every one suicide, there are at least four reported suicide attempts among active duty service members in the Navy and Marine Corps. DOD Suicide Event Report Calendar year 2014 Suicide and suicide related behaviors, although rare, can have lasting effects within a command, directly impacting readiness through loss of highly trained service members, reducing morale, and redirecting command assets. 8 Tobacco Tobacco use has numerous documented negative health effects, affecting nearly every organ in the body. Quitting smoking, however can lead to positive, immediate, and long-term health benefits. It is never too late to quit NMCPHC Tobacco use adversely affects readiness. It results in reduced physical fitness, lung capacity, stamina, health, and visual acuity. 9 Drug Abuse Drug overdose deaths and opioid-involved deaths continue to increase in the United States. The majority of drug overdose deaths (more than six out of ten) involve an opioid MMWR Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic and service members are not immune. Opioid abuse and dependency degrades operational readiness and is inconsistent with our core values.
