2 Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights, The month of November has been a busy one for many of us. We hosted the Men s conference at St. Michael and I appreciate (and Fr. Jim does also because he told me so) all the volunteers that made this event a success. We handled the parking and hospitality and even had help from a lone Squire. Nicholas Johnson (no relation just another great Johnson) was asked to help at the Men s conference with the audio visual equipment for the day, Nicholas really seemed to enjoy this task and who knows - he may have a future in broadcasting and for one of our local networks. Great Job Nicholas! We even had a special thank you for My Catholic Faith Ministries which can be found on our Facebook page. Didn t know we had a Facebook page? Karl Hoffman set it up for the council and assembly and it is a great tool to have to keep our brother KNIGHTS informed and gives me the opportunity to let everyone know what is happening and post items about an event that was scheduled that day or even while it is actually happening. Social media can be an awesome tool when used to help support our council and the events we put on or participle in. This is just another tool that can be used like our website to direct parishioners and our Brother Knights to for events and detailed information. Mike Mock has spent numerous hours on our website and we need to thank him for all his hard work. Visit us at Next it was time to fire up the pancake makers, ham slicers and juice machines. We started with Sacred Heart on the 10 th and served up our top secret pancakes (Cash and Carry but don t tell anyone) and held a membership drive and sold Christmas cards. On the 17 th we did the same at St. Michael. All involved had lots of fun. We used our new Knights of Columbus coloring books and the little kids loved them I even think I may have seen Fr. Pat coloring in one of them! Speaking of Fr. Pat - he was a major force helping us to starting the Hispanic round table later that day at Sacred Heart. This round table would not have been possible without the help of Karl Hoffman, Peter Gonzales and John Zyrkowski who were there after 2pm Mass the past 5 weeks with me handing out flyers and talking to candidates. We had the special Hispanic 1 st degree team here from Vancouver and their families (please see pictures below) and had a special ice cream social afterwards because who doesn t like ice cream. We had 8 brothers join our council so we welcome them to the Knights and we look forward to having them getting involved in our councils events. So that brings up membership. We are now at 12 new members and 8 transfers so we are half way to Star council so remember my Grand Knight challenge and recruit one of your Catholic brothers. Now it s time for the program that is my favorite thing (I sound like Oprah) that we do - the KNIGHTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS. So let s deck the halls and spread some cheer but I can t do it myself so I am looking for 6 Santa s helpers to drive their sleighs (a pickup will work also) on the 14 th of December. We will need lots of elves (and yes Ed Sauley they do make your elf suit in your size). So to start this we will meet at Columbian hall on Friday December 6 th at 7pm to prepackage all the lights, decorations, tree skirts and extension cords. We will also go through the stuffed animals and toys that St Vincent St. Mikes has been saving for us. Then at 8am December 14 th outside the hall we will pre-fit the trees to the stands (this was Kim Washburn s and Don Robbins s idea last year that really made it easy when we got to the houses). Get your list of names ( I could use 3-4 volunteers to call some of these families to qualify them and find out what is needed; knights wives can do this also) and grab your bag, toys and away we go. Last year we delivered 25 trees in 2 ½ hours so I think we would even have impressed the big guy in red. So help us to make it a wonderful Christmas for some others that may not have a Merry Christmas otherwise. Food for Families Please bring some nonperishable food items to our next council meeting on December 5 th. We will be collecting food for the Thurston County Food Bank during the month of December. Merry Christmas and God Bless Darren E. Johnson Grand Knight Council 1643 Upcoming Local Degrees Brothers: If you are interested in going to a 2 nd or 3 rd degree please contact Darren Johnson, or darrenejohnson@comcast.net for more details. 4 FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE My Brother Sir Knights, The Veterans Appreciation Dinner and Memorial Mass behind us leaves one last event for the year - our Christmas party on the 19th of December at Columbian Hall. This year it will be a dual event with the council. The 4th degree will be sponsoring two military families at $300 per family. I believe that we will have a donation from Mills and Mills that will also help with two additional families. As always our Chef will supply a main dish and those in attendance will be asked to supply a side dish. Your friendly hall bartenders will be there to supply your favorite beverages. Backtracking a bit, thank you to all who helped with the Veterans dinner. The Sea Cadets did a great job with the presentation of the colors and clean up. Jack and Kathy Winslow were an impressive duo behind the bar and as always the dinner was excellent, Sam Pellegrino - well done. Thanks to all who helped this past weekend with the Keep Christ in Christmas tree cutting, Jared Boyd and the Squires did a great job. Nine trees were donated by Schilter Family Farm again this year and set up at Pellegrino s Italian Kitchen on Cleveland Ave in Tumwater. Stop by later this month and check it out. Thanks to Sam and his staff for breakfast afterward. We` started that morning at 8 am and had the trees cut, set and breakfast done by noon. I think we got this thing licked. Finally on the 6th of December there will be a set up for the Knights Before Christmas, packing lights, stands and ornaments for distribution on the 14th. Volunteers would be greatly appreciated. See Darren Johnson s Grand Knight s Report for all of the details. To everyone - Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Respectfully, Mike Colosi Faithful Navigator St. Francis of Assisi Assembly 1183 COLUMBIAN HALL TO BE CLOSED FOR REMODEL IN JANUARY Columbian Hall will be closed for remodel during the month of January. Our new floor is being installed and we look forward to the completion. Please pay close attention to the calendar for the location of any events normally held at the hall during this time. Thank you for your support and for your generous donations to our floor replacement. CAN YOU PRAY FOR VOCATIONS FOR JUST ONE HOUR? Brother Knights, Father Jim Lee has requested that the Knights of Columbus pray for religious vocations at the St. Joseph Adoration Chapel at the St. Michael Downtown Church for one or more hours per week. We have designated Sunday AM hours of 1 AM, 2 AM, or 3 AM on December 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29 th as our Knights of Columbus hours. Please call Tom Hruska at or hruska@wwdb.org to sign up for one or more of the above hours. Thank You. God bless you and your family. Page -4-

15 Knight of the Month Bill Bowman The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Knight of the month for November is Bill Bowman. Here is a photo of Brother Knight Bill serving as one of our Tootsie Roll Campaign volunteers. It seemed that Bill was out almost every day during this year s campaign. In typical Bill Bowman fashion, it seemed that he was always looking for a place where he could help. Our council is very blessed to have Bill as a member. In 2006 Bill and his wife Jane moved to Des Moines, WA to be with their family. After being very active in Rotary for many years, Bill decided to make a change, and joined the Knights at St Philomena s in They moved to Lacey in 2009 to be closer to their growing family. In 2011, his loving wife Jane, of 50 years, passed away after a brief illness. Bill is learning a lot about soccer from his 8 & 6 year old grandsons, and spoiling them as grandparents will. Bill is an active member of Sacred Heart Parish and can regularly be seen volunteering at one of the Parish activities or at one of our Knights of Columbus activities. Every member of our council can expect a call from Bill at least once each year. Bill has volunteered to contact every council member to wish him a happy birthday! Bill has been doing this now for the past several months. Thank you Brother Knight Bill for all that you do for our council and for our community. Congratulations on being selected as our Knight of the Month for November! Page -15-

16 Family of the Month Dennis and Carol Perez The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Family of the month for November is Dennis and Carol Perez. Denny and Carol are members of St. George Byzantine Rite Parish. Denny sings as a cantor at St. George and is a member of our council s Schola Cantorum choir. Carol works as a volunteer at the St. George rectory where she serves as their accountant, publishes their bulletin, and does whatever else is requested of her by their new Pastor, Father James Lane. Denny and Carol will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on February 8, Denny joined the Knights of Columbus in September of 1982 and became an Honorary Life Member of the Knights last year. After growing up in the Baltimore area, Denny entered the military service and spent five years in the Puget Sound area where he met and married Carol. After his military service, he returned to Baltimore and worked there for a short time. But the lure of the Puget Sound area lured him back and the Perez family move back to this area. Denny and Carol then both spent long careers working for agencies of the State of Washington. Denny worked for the Department of Highways, which became the Department of Transportation. He retired in Carol worked at the State Printer and the Department of Ecology. After retiring as a full time employee, Carol worked for another eight years as a part time employee. She fully retired from State service on June 30th of this year. Carol now is busier than ever at the St. George rectory as she is learning how those who have fully retired from their paying jobs often find that they are spending more time at work than before they retired! And Denny can be seen working as a volunteer at many K of C events such as the Tootsie Roll Campaign where he seemed to be there during many of the days where we staffed displays at stores in our area. Our council and our community are very fortunate in having Denny and Carol Perez as members of our Knights of Columbus Family. They both exemplify the giving spirit that the Knights of Columbus is known for. Thank you, Denny and Carol, for all that you do. And congratulations on being selected as our Family of the Month for November. Page -16-
