1 Flotilla 36 Volume XXXI, Issue 11 Boca Raton, Florida 7 th District, Division 3 November, 2007 This version PUBLIC No Dissemination Restrictions. Ed Oleksak attended the memorial services in Paris this year. Please see his report in this issue. Save the date. The annual Change of Watch dinner dance, the premier social event of the year, will be held on Friday, January 11, Anyone attending last year will attest to a great evening. We have carefully chosen this date to avoid conflicts with busy seasonal schedules. Same place, same time, same menu as last year with even better entertainment. KEY DATES FOR NOVEMBER Thank you Tom Thayer for introducing us to Greg Reynolds, the founder and driving force behind Lagoon Keepers. Greg explained the history, capability and mission of Lagoon Keepers. We now have a pontoon workboat located in Lake Rogers for local use. Remember cleaner waters are safer waters so PITCH IN & POLE OUT. The November 1st meeting is a very important one, not to be missed. It is election night for our two elected officers, Flotilla Commander and Flotills Vice Commander. Tony Quesada is our only nominee so far for Flotilla Commander, and Tom Thayer (above) is our only nominee so far for Vice Commander. Nominees may be presented from the floor. In any event, before the election can take place, a quorum must be present. It would be very embarasing for our flotilla if we did not hold an election as scheduled, so plan on being there. 1 This section will highlight dates and events in the coming month. For a full listing, see the Calendar. 11/ Flotilla Meeting 11/ BS&S starts at Base 11/ AUXOP Weather continues 11/ Staff Meeting Note: Calendars frequently change, check with event leader to verify November Agenda Call to Order pledge of Allegiance Invocation Introduction of guests Commander s Report ELECTION OF 2008 OFFICERS Awards and Recognition Vice Commander s Staff Reports Old Business New Business Adjourn Good and Welfare Fellowship

6 From The Helm Tom Rutherfoord Flotilla Commander 3 6 fc@cgauxboca.org Congratulations to Jim Godden, who has been recognized by the staff as crewperson of the month. Jim has 51 hours on patrol already this year. This isn t counting the hours spent on the USCG Eagle. Congratulations Jim and thanks. Veterans Day is November 11. Did you know that Veterans Day used to be called Armistice Day? Several months before World War I was officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles, Germany and the Allies declared an armistice (a cease-fire) to start on the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month of A year after the war, President Wilson declared an annual Armistice Day observance every November 11, honoring the veterans of WWI as well as being dedicated to the cause of world peace. Those who experienced WWI thought that it would be the war to end all wars. As we now know, things did not turn out that way. Following WWII and Korea, Armistice Day, which by then had become a national holiday, was changed by Congress to Veterans Day at the urging of veterans organizations around the country. From that time forward, Veterans Day honors all of our veterans. I ll bet most of you knew that bit of history, but do you remember these more recent events? In 1968, Veterans Day and three other holidays were moved to nearby Mondays in order to provide 3-day weekends for federal employees. The other holidays moved were Washington s Birthday, Memorial Day, and Columbus Day. (Extra credit: what were the dates of these 3?) Well, many states reflected local sentiment in continuing to observe Veterans Day on November 11. So, in 1975, President Ford signed a bill officially returning Veterans Day to its original date. Let us all honor America s veterans on November 11, and celebrate their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Let us honor the living, even as we remember the dead. 45 MLB-3 6
7 Antonio P. Quesada Vice Flotilla Commander 3 6 vfc@cgauxboca.org Soon it will be a new year with new Flotilla staff officers. We wish them well and we support them in their new assignments. Soon it is also going to be our Change of Watch! Last year the Change of Watch had a good turnout. The Change of Watch for this year will be on Friday, January 11, It will be at the Delray Beach Golf Club (same as last year). I ask that you mark your calendar and attend. It will be an entertaining night. Shirley Fisher has been working hard to make this event a really special affair. The cost is going to be $35 per person. I look forward to seeing you there. The Fall District conference was held in Fort Lauderdale on September 27, 28, 29 and 30. The conference afforded attendees with an opportunity to renew old acquaintances and attend seminars and workshops that were challenging, fascinating, interesting, and educational The seminar on Writing a Quality Article for the CG Auxiliary by Rob Westcott was challenging and educational. The seminar on ATON & PATON by Geri Way was fascinating. The gold side in attendance made it known that she looked forward to Auxiliarists participation and assistance in ATON and PATON assignments. The Member Training seminar by COMO Allen Brown was interesting since he encouraged us to always think of training that is of interest to new members. If you want to help a staff officer in their assignments, become an assistant to a Flotilla Staff Officer (FSO). This way you could train for the position. If you are interested in filling any staff position, please contact either the current FSO; Tom Rutherfoord, FC; or myself, Tony Quesada, VFC. The next few months are important. I urge you to attend our Flotilla meetings. During the November meeting new Flotilla leadership will be elected. Your participation at the Flotilla meetings is needed and welcomed. As our Flotilla Commander mentioned last month, please take the initiative to check your qualifications and see what missions you may have to perform before the end of the year. I request that if you have put in hours, please give the # 7029s to our IS Officer. If you are preparing your # 7029 manually, look into the convenience of submitting an version of the Form. Call me if you need help with the version. Lastly, as the year 2007 winds down, let s take a moment to look back and assess our roles as Coast Guard Auxiliarists. Let s ask ourselves what we could have done differently for the USCGAUX and the Flotilla. Then, please think about what we can do in 2008 to improve Flotilla 36. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for your help and support. As I said in opening, soon it will be a new year. So, this is the time of year to think about filling staff positions for Some of our staff officers would like to have help in their assignments, or may want to let someone else give it a try. 7
8 Operations C. Scott Ellington, First- we thank all the coxswains who have scheduled training and QE missions in the past month, and upcoming missions in November. Now the bad news. We have had to cancel 3 planned missions in October for lack of crew- yet we continue to have a list of crew who must have hours by years end to remain qualified. completed a Aux presence at the Ft. Lauderdale boat show, and, a presence at veterans day celebration at the Boca Raton ceremony honoring our vets. Thanks to all who got these missions done! See you on the water, and in the air! Do you have a mirror for distress? It s the best!!! Folks, let me be blunt- it will be hard to schedule missions in December to make up lost hours for the whole year, due to holidays family etc. I cannot be at the November meeting, but have asked Bill Bartley to stand in for me to get some November missions on the board and give a chance for everybody to get the hours on the board There are two QE missions now scheduled on the 10 th of Nov. Mike Hanuschak and my vessel. The QE crew and coxswains are booked, but if we are not full with those needing QE renewal, then there may be room--- call us. Lunchtime on patrol for Hennessey and crew: Thayer, Hersey and Poces As we look at the things we have accomplished this year one of the best things you have done is made almost 100% of our coxswains and crew capable of using POMS for missions Coxswains can schedule, and crew can request to join missions displayed on line. We should hold a POMS course early next year for crew who need to learn how to use this automated POMS process. It really saves a lot of phone messages and missed connections. Next year the new command at the base in Ft. Lauderdale has committed to put Aux boats and USCG boats and helos on the mission boards for joint training and exercises. By the time you have read this we will have accomplished many important missions; we will have conducted an evening ATON (Aids To Navigation) mission, checking on all of the north sector lights and buoys, and, we will have 8 Know what this is? It is the map to a great evening. Ask anyone who was here last year.
