2 L. Col. Mahew Brown Commander, 181 IW/DGS COMMANDER S COMMENTS I have recenly been rying o read more since I have finally reached a poin in my life where I can read for pleasure versus required reading for a class, course, or he dreaded PME reading! Wha I have discovered is I am a fan of Winson S. Churchill who was Prime Miniser of Grea Briain during World War II. Depending on wha you read he was eiher a grea saesman wih incredible wi or a canankerous cigar smoker who sruggled wih drinking a lile oo much. I believe he laer helped shape he former. Regardless, his houghs are well published, and for me, relevan o much of wha life (family, friends, careers, ec.) requires of us. As I approach ye anoher birhday, I am comfored in he belief ha I am coninuing o grow each day. No, unforunaely, I am no geing any aller bu raher growing in my undersanding of how o measure success and wha is imporan in life. I can finally concede life is no a sprin. As Mr. Churchill is credied for saying, Coninuous effor no srengh or inelligence is he key o unlocking our poenial. I hink for many of us guardsmen we can credi our careers o his philosophy. Those who are successful, however you choose o measure i, can probably aribue i o deerminaion, perseverance, and giving hemselves fully o he ask a hand. So wha is he secre? Wha is he formula for success? Success is sumbling from failure o failure wih no loss of enhusiasm. (Winson S. Churchill). I hink his one is perfec o describe mos of our effors. Wheher i is susained physical finess, quiing smoking, compleing a degree, or finally finishing ha PME, success requires passion. Posiive people surround hemselves wih posiive people who have posiive energy. Those ha succeed in life and a whaever hey se ou o accomplish do so because hey have a passion. They have such a belief in hemselves ha nobody and nohing ges in heir way. For hose who can say posiive and opimisic when i is hardes are he ones who come ou on he oher side winners. Aiude is a lile hing ha makes a big difference. (Yes, Winson again). Someimes when leading meeings remember; Courage is wha i akes o sand up and speak; courage is also wha i akes o si down and lisen. Or, jus as imporan, when you are aending meeings remember; If you have an imporan poin o make, don ry o be suble or clever. Use a pile driver. Hi he poin once. Then come back and hi i again. Then hi i a hird ime a remendous whack. (Winson S. Churchill) My mos favorie Churchill quoe; To each here comes in heir lifeime a special momen when hey are figuraively apped on he shoulder and offered he chance o do a very special hing, unique o hem and fied o heir alens. Wha a ragedy if ha momen finds hem unprepared or unqualified for ha which could have been heir fines hour. We are using his in our squadron o explain why we menor, why we aggressively pursue professional developmen opporuniies, why we care abou our readiness requiremens, and why we serve. So back o my opening commen, maybe here is always somehing I should be pursuing o beer myself. I beer ge sared on some PME readings! For me, oher noable quoes from Mr. Churchill include - You have enemies? Good. Tha means you've sood up for somehing, someime in your life. - We make a living by wha we ge, bu we make a life by wha we give. - Success is no final, failure is no faal: i is he courage o coninue ha couns. - Never, never, never give up. - My mos brillian achievemen was my abiliy o be able o persuade my wife o marry me. 3 CHIEF S COMMENTS When Is I Time To Go? My firs wo Chiefs Commens were eniled Why am I here? and Wha do I do now? In Why am I here? we reviewed he benefis of membership and some saisfacions a person could receive as a member of our Profession of Arms. In Wha do I do now? we looked a The Enlised Force Srucure s mandae o mainain he highes level of personal readiness o mee mission requiremens by being echnically, physically, menally, and spiriually ready o accomplish he mission. Wih hose quesions answered, and my own reiremen soon approaching, my las quesion o you is When is i ime o go? Tha quesion will be answered differenly by many, for some airmen, i will be afer heir firs enlismen, wheher hey joined for ravel, raining opporuniies, or educaional benefis, heir ime in he miliary is over. Tha is a choice available o all who join, and I hope heir ime as a member of he Armed Forces was rewarding o hem and heir uni. Always ake pride in he fac ha you were ONE of he ONE PERCENT! Chief Maser Sg. Sco Winegar, 181 IW/CF For ohers, wo or hree enlismens may pass before hey decide i is ime o go. Life happens, plans change, and you mus make he bes decision for you and your family. Remember, here may be opporuniies laer o join back up. We have members on base who have had a break in service and reurned o finish heir careers. Word o he wise do a good job while you re here, rea everyone wih respec, and don burn any bridges you never know, he saff sergean of oday could be he wing commander of omorrow. Some deermined few make i o he end. Wheher radiional, acive guard reserve (AGR), or echnician, he rewards of making i o reiremen canno be undervalued. Sacrifices are many over a 20 plus year career; deploymens, missed holidays, no being here for life evens (my daugher was born while I was in basic and graduaed high school while I was in Baghdad, I was able o be here for her wedding his year, bu my broher wasn, he s an acive duy Chief on deploymen, funny sory - he me some of our Civil Engineering guys over here, imagine heir surprise running ino anoher Chief Winegar halfway across he world, kudos o hem for aking care of his issue - Racer Pride a is fines.) Despie he sacrifices, when you reach he end mos will say i was worh i. So, when is i ime o go? For me, i s when I can answer Why am I here? and Wha do I do now? he way I should anymore. I has been my privilege and honor o be ONE of ha ONE PERCENT who served, as acive, radiional, echnician, and lasly AGR, for 27 years. There is no quesion he imporan role he 181s Inelligence Wing Services Fligh plays in ensuring airmen say well fed, bu heir duies include more han food services. The 181s Services Fligh recenly had an opporuniy o rain on hose addiional duies wihin heir career field, during annual field raining in July a Alpena, Mich. In addiion o managing food faciliies, services is responsible for: lodging; moruary affairs; finess programs and faciliies; morale, welfare and recreaion programs and faciliies; and search and recovery operaions. In he pas, all we have done when we have come up for our annual raining is food service, said Maser Sg. Amberlee. Well, on a drill weekend, food service is our raining. The grea hing abou his annual raining is we are no cooking, we are no doing food services. The res of he base is seeing us do MWR, we are doing ournamens, we are sponsoring he Racer Rerea, we are puing up he SPEK, so we are doing hings ha are no normally highlighed, said Helm. During annual field raining, service fligh members received raining in moruary affairs, search and recovery operaions, finess and recreaion, Fuel Fired Equipmen, ServSafe, and Single Palleized Expediionary Kichen (SPEK) raining. ServSafe is a food and beverage safey course mandaed by Naional Guard Bureau for anyone in food services, and adminisered by he Naional Resauran Associaion. Maser Sg. Helm and Senior Maser Sg. Jay McKee are boh cerified insrucors and procors for he course. During annual raining, he services fligh augh a ServSafe course o he 181s Services Fligh, as well as members of he Vermon Air Naional Guard 158h Figher Wing, Alpena Comba Readiness Training Cener, and he Army and Air Force Exchange Service. By becoming a cerified insrucor and procor, we are able o cu he cos of members aending he course by approximaely half, said Helm. The SPEK raining allowed members he opporuniy o rain on a kichen used in a bare base siuaion or domesic operaion. I has he capabiliy o serve up o 550 people, hree ho meals per day, wih raions known as Uniized Group Raions. When we deploy, i is a package ha goes on a single palle, so we can se-up a meal and feed up o 550 people from he SPEK, said Helm The morale, welfare and recreaions aciviies provided by he services fligh included sponsoring he Racer Rerea. A faciliy open o Racers only, he Racer Rerea served as a place o visi afer work o socialize, play games, and mee new Racers. Addiionally, he services fligh hosed many ournamens, o include, sofball, Eucre, baskeball, golf, corn hole and a volleyball ournamen. A lo of he ( services fligh members) were really nervous abou coming o Alpena because hey have never been on a TDY, or hey have never been o Alpena and hey didn know wha o expec, so we spen a couple monhs geing hem jazzed so hey would be excied abou i, said Helm. They are having a grea ime, hey are geing a lo of raining, hey are all doing an excellen job, and I am jus proud of hem, said Helm. I is nice o see hem growing and becoming beer airmen for he Guard. Airman 1s Class Dalon Hacher is a radiional guardsman wihin he services fligh. Annual field raining was his firs deploymen, and he was impressed wih he raining and leadership. We have grea leadership wih Sg. McKee and Sergean Helm. They did a grea job geing everyhing ogeher, said Hacher. Hacher feels becoming a member of he Air Naional Guard has provided him valuable skills beyond he echnical raining received for his posiion in he services fligh. I m more disciplined, I can do more, and I m a beer leader, said Hacher. 5 Racer Flyer

I is rare o have a Close Air Suppor specific join combined live fire exercise wih muliple coaliion allies and represenaion from all five branches of service like hose ha were available a Norhern Srike, said Maser Sg. Damon Giron, 113h ASOS Tacical Air Conrol Pary member. We can accomplish more in 11 days a an exercise like Norhern Srike han during a ypical quarerly raining cycle due o he acical level focus and suppor of all agencies involved. 113h ASOS TACP members conrolled CAS missions employing live weapons from boh fixed wing and roary wing aircraf, live surface-o-surface morar Call-For-Fire missions wih 60mm and 120mm sysems and had he rare opporuniy o qualify on mos of he crew-served weapons in he US Army invenory. This raining venue is an opporuniy o see how he res of he ANG ASOS do business and share raining lessons as well as inegrae direcly wih Fire Suppor elemens o produce combined effecs on he balefield. The exercise also feaured an inernaional flavor wih a half-dozen Join Terminal Aack Conrollers from Lihuania and Canada paricipaing in he exercise. In all, 29 differen unis from 16 saes, plus he wo inernaional parners, paricipaed in he exercise. We planned and execued war ime missions ha resuled in air-assauls ino arge areas from UH-60 Black Hawk helicopers o conrol air srikes, said Giron. We were also able o cross-rain wih he U.S. Coas Guard on Lake Huron and discuss ineroperabiliy of capabiliies o suppor search and rescue operaions in he U.S. As compuer based simulaion becomes a larger porion of miliary raining each year, exercises like Norhern Srike provide he real world, face-oface ineracion and realisic acical level scenarios and sress necessary o coninue o ensure effecive Join/Combined comba operaions in he fuure. said LT Ed Shulman, 113h ASOS Tacical Air Conrol Pary member. The value and necessiy of live fire-suppor raining in dynamic venues canno be oversaed. Norhern Srike 2013 is an Air Naional Guard sponsored, wo week long raining exercise emphasizing join and coaliion air-o-ground missions, preparing personnel o conduc direc comba operaions. The exercise allowed he various unis o rain on join operaions beween air, land and sea organizaions. A c T H G b 1 r c F o n i s g g c s o P 181 Inelligence Wing 6 Sep/Oc 2013 w

The mission of a Tacical Air Conrol Pary airman is o call in air srikes on he enemy in suppor of friendly forces.
