1 Cleveland Section, District 10 Chartered in 1921, Over 600 members strong P.O. Box Cleveland, OH September 14, 2010 Meeting Participate in Your Profession Join Vic Matthews, past American Welding Society president, as he holds an open forum on what AWS membership can do for you at our September 14 meeting at St. Paul s Hellenic Center. Be prepared to find out that your participation in your profession generates many of the member benefits. Participation in the Cleveland Section programs offers you critical benefits as you progress in your career. Think of the leads for a new job. Training programs. Tips to solve a fit-up problem. Talking with your mentor. Finding a specialized testing service. Evaluating a potential employee. While the list goes on, the participating member holds the key to the door of the benefits room. Your AWS membership also brings a number of financial advantages. These include: discounts on welding equipment and tools of the trade, discounts on AWS conferences, certification programs, education programs, and events, and access to a health insurance program (details at Encourage your coworkers to join AWS. Besides the above benefits, new AWS individual members get an AWS technical publication for just $25 (up to a $192 value). They can choose from more than 20 publications including Jefferson's Welding Encyclopedia (CD-ROM only), Design and Planning Manual for Cost-Effective Welding, Welding Handbook, 9th Ed., Vol. 1, or the Welding Handbook, 9th Ed., Vol. 2, the Welding Handbook, 9th Ed., Vol. 3, or Welding Metallurgy. As a bonus new individual members can join for two-years and save $25. Take a moment now to mark your calendar with the Cleveland Section s program listed in this newsletter. Note that many of these programs qualify for credit towards CWI renewal, another value for participating members. At our October 12 meeting learn how to apply gas-tungsten-arc welding to repair projects. Bob Gardner, CWI and CWE, will have examples and seeks audience questions. WE VE GOT A WEBSITE! Cleveland Section has its own website, hosted by AWS National. It can be viewed at or accessed through the AWS homepage starting with the Committees and Sections link. It will be a source of current section information including such things as meeting schedules and locations, meeting topics, events of interest to our members, and current and past copies of the monthly newsletter. The website can be a tool to quickly let members know of last minutes changes such as rescheduling meetings because of inclement weather. SAVE A TREE AND HELP A STUDENT! The money spent on the monthly newsletter is money not available for worthy causes such as scholarships. Please contact Harry Sadler, harry_sadler@lincolnelectric.com if you are interested in receiving the monthly newsletter via in place of a paper copy. Cleveland s Officers Open New Season The newly elected AWS Cleveland Section officers have prepared a series of monthly technical talks and visits to local shops to benefit our members (list and dates on back page). Each officer brings a unique experience to his position and expects to meet the responsibilities of the office. The five elected officers of the Cleveland Section are Chairman Phil Schmidt, First Vice Chairman Mike Sherman, Second Vice Chairman (open), Secretary Mark Demchak, and Treasurer Harry Sadler. The key responsibilities of the Chairman come from the AWS Section Operations Manual (available on the AWS web site) that states: The overall general responsibility for the execution and supervision of the Section s
2 activities have been placed by the membership in the hands of the Section Chairman. The responsibility is therefore great and the office gives the authority to delegate duties and powers. The Chairman must discharge the duties of the office, know the requirements and objectives of the National Society and the Section, give as much time to the activity as is required by the duties of the office and be aware of the needs of the welding industry in his/her area. certification. As the chief executive of the Section/Division Chairman Phil Schmidt, a registered Professional Engineer, is currently president of Schmidt Equipment, Inc., a fabricating company in NE Ohio. A graduate of Ohio State University, Phil has more than 45 years of experience in the welding industry as a welding engineer, manager, and consultant in diverse areas including aerospace, defense, shipbuilding, nuclear, automotive, material handling and contract manufacturing. He holds a diploma in International Welding Engineering, is an AWS Certified Welding Inspector and Certified Welding Supervisor and is a CWS instructor. He is active with the Barckhoff Welding Management team and Total Welding Management and has experience with both Lean Manufacturing and ISO THIS COULD BE YOU The First Vice Chairman is the second chief executive of the Section and serves as a team leader for the Program, Technical, Education and any other special committees, to summarize from the Operations Manual. Mike Sherman is a CWI and CWE that has been in the welding business for more than 20 years. Mike started his own business in the 1980 s that grew from one man to a high of 20 at its busiest. He recently sold this business and currently works as the Aluminum Operations Manager for a major Northeast Ohio manufacturer. Mike has held pipe welding certifications in API, ASME, and ABS as well as plate certifications in D1.1 and D14.1. He proudly worked as the Contract Welding Supervisor on the ARES Upper Stage Simulator that was built at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. The Second Vice Chairman is the third chief executive of the Section. The Cleveland Section is currently seeking nominees for this post. In general the Operations Manual states, the officer s main duty is to assist the Chairman. The Second Vice Chairman is the team leader for the Membership, Attendance, Hospitality, Entertainment and Publicity Committees. The efforts of each of these committees must be coordinated in order that the membership is offered a complete package. The Secretary is the official correspondent for the Section. The Secretary must take an interest in all phases of Section operation, and must keep aware of all work being done and projects underway, as the Secretary may be called upon to take over, temporarily, the duties of an absent officer or committee chairman. It is the Chairman s obligation to keep the Secretary informed regarding their Society business activities. All of the Section s business should pass across the Secretary s desk. Mark Demchak is a Past Chairman of the Cleveland Section and the current Secretary. He is employed by Total Quality Testing, Inc. and oversees the daily operations of the firm s laboratory. TQT Laboratories provides nondestructive testing services, fabrication and erection inspection, project management, as well as various inspection and qualification services to the Welding Industry. Mark is an ASNT Level III in Radiography, Ultrasonic, Magnetic Particle, Liquid Penetrant and Visual Inspection. He is also a Certified Welding Inspector and a past recipient of the Dalton E. Hamilton CWI of the Year Award. The Treasurer, to summarize the Operations Manual, is the official custodian of the Section s funds, receiving the Section s money and disbursing it only upon orders made by proper authority. To fulfill this obligation, the Treasurer must be kept aware of every Section activity and be informed as to the possibility of its need for funds, the amount of such and the frequency. Harry Sadler is Manager Military and Shipbuilding Sales for the Lincoln Electric Co. In that position he is responsible for evaluating the needs of the U. S. Military and the U. S. Shipbuilding Industry to help them improve quality and reduce welding costs. In earlier positions with Lincoln, he was Manager of Specials Products in the Consumable Division, Manager of Application Engineering in the Weld Tech Center, and a Technical Representative in Chicago and Bethlehem, PA. Harry earned his BS Degree in Metallurgy from Penn State University and is a member of the American
3 Welding Society, the Cleveland Engineering Society and is a former Certified Welding Inspector. He is past Chairman of the Black Hawk AWS Section in Rockford, Illinois, and the Cleveland AWS Section. He has served on the Pressure Vessel Research Council, the Board of Directors of the Welding Research Council, and the Materials Subgroup of the Section IX Subcommittee of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committee. CWI Seminar and Exam The next certified Welding Seminar and Exam is scheduled for this area in October. The seminar runs October 17-22, and the exam is Saturday, October 23. Both are held at Lincoln Electric Company. The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is widely recognized in the worldwide welding industry as a method to help ensure the highest level of quality workmanship. The seminar provides a way for skilled and knowledgeable individuals, with limited time to study, to prepare for the AWS certification exam. Seasoned instructors teach the material you need to know and how to use and understand the latest standards. Apply now and register for this seminar and exam in order to meet the application deadline of September 13, For more details on this program, visit the AWS website at or call , ext Certified Robotic Arc Welding AWS Exam This certification allows many welding personnel employed in various welding sectors to measure themselves against standards for their occupation. It also signifies to employers that the CRAW Operator or Technician has demonstrated the capability of working with various codes, standards, and specifications. Since proof of active practice or re-examination is required every three years, certification also signifies that the person s certification is current. The Certified Robotic Arc Welding Technician or Operator exam is scheduled for October 25, 2010 at Lincoln Electric Company. Call Patricia Kernya at for details. The application deadline for this exam is September 13, For more information on this program and to apply for other exams visit or call , ext FABTECH 2010 Returns to Atlanta North America's largest metal forming, fabricating, finishing, and welding event returns to the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia, November 2-4, This annual event anticipates 22,000 visitors and over 1,000 exhibiting companies covering more than 350,000 net square feet of floor space. 4 Scholarship Money Each year our Cleveland Section awards scholarships for skills development and academic pursuits. If you, or someone you know is interested in applying for a welding related scholarship, please contact our Scholarship Chairman Bob Gardner. Call Bob at , or Ken Kasnyik at The application deadline is April 1, 2011 for this year s scholarships. In addition to the Cleveland Section scholarships, AWS Scholarships are awarded at the national level, the district level, and the local level. Details and applications are available at The Cleveland Section has three named scholarships, the John Gerken, the Jack Buck, and the Ray Sacha. Each of these awards has a specific focus. The Gerken Award is to encourage welding education at the community college and university level for up to four years. The successful candidate for the Buck Award will attend the Lincoln Electric Welding School to learn pipe welding. Recognizing that designers, engineers, and specifiers need to have a practical understanding of welding, the Sacha Award is to develop welding skills for students pursuing a post secondary degree in a welding related program and will have their tuition covered at the Lincoln Electric Welding School. The local scholarships are awarded to residents within the Cleveland Section boundaries. It is not necessary to be an AWS member or related to an AWS member. Volunteer Opportunities Here s your chance to help promote welding and participate with other member of the Cleveland Section. There are currently a number of openings on various committees. Many of these openings only require one to three hours of your time each month. Talk to any of the section officers or committee chairmen for more details. Iron Man Returns As the movie Iron Man 2 appeared in theaters last May it prompted AWS to provide an updated edition of the Iron Man Comic Book to AWS sections and student chapters. The book, underwritten and sponsored by The Lincoln Electric Company, is a different size from the original Iron Man comic book with some minor changes. Marvel Comics, the producer of the Iron Man movies, produced and printed the book. The fresh and exciting book is a great way to introduce welding to a wide range of ages through teachers from elementary to high school levels, and leaders of Girl and Boy Scout troops, 4-H, FFA, and other youth oriented groups. To order some for distribution just vpinsky@aws.org with the quantity and how they will be used. Discounts on Welding Equipment/Tools Card-carrying AWS members can receive Members'-only discounts on welding equipment and tools of the trade by participating distributors through the GAWDA / AWS Discount Program. Discounts and items discounted are at the sole discretion of each distributor/branch. For the discount amount, please contact the company/branch directly. To see a full-list of participating distributors, use the AWS web site Job Post Job Find The AWS Foundation unveiled a new, improved welding job board in June -- Besides a stand-alone, unique URL, the redesigned board includes additional capabilities for companies posting jobs and for individuals looking for jobs. It offers direct access to over 88 percent of the welding jobs posted on the Internet via relationships with numerous job boards and distributors. The accounts of current or previous customers of Job Find have been transitioned to the new job board and passwords reset. For those who have posted their resume, it has also been transitioned to the new site and is currently listed as private. If they wish to have their resume visible on the new job board, they will need to access their account and make their resume public. s have been sent to all with instructions on accessing accounts at For questions, call , or to support@jobtarget.com.
