2 MESSAGE FROM THE POST SERVICE OFFICER Benefits Questions and Answers Q: Can I receive unemployability (100 percent disability rating)? A: Total Disability based upon Individual Unemployability (TDIU) allows VA to pay certain veterans at the 100 percent disability rate even though their service-connected disabilities are not rated 100 percent disabling. Veterans must show that they are unable to maintain substantially gainful employment as a result of their service-connected disabilities. When filing this application, it is helpful to demonstrate to VA why the veteran is unsuitable for physical employment and sedentary employment. Veterans filing for TDIU should focus only on the conditions that are service connected VA does not consider non-service-connected conditions when determining if a veteran is employable. Q: Are children of veterans eligible for any VA educational benefits or scholarships? A: Spouses and children of veterans who are totally and permanently disabled, family members of veterans who die of a service-connected condition, and family members of service members who died While serving on active duty are eligible for Dependents Education Assistance (DEA). Generally, DEA provides veterans with up to forty-five months of education benefits to help with degree programs, certificate programs, and apprenticeship or on-the-job training. Under some circumstances, DEA may provide assistance by paying for correspondence courses or remedial courses. Questions? The auxiliary kicked off its first two brunches with success and excitement! Special thanks to all those who have offered hands-on helped so far and to the VFW officers who came out to support us both Sundays. Please come out and join us for brunch from 10:30 to 1:30 every Sunday! We are looking for volunteers to cook and to come in and dine. The menu is different every week based on the creative volunteer chefs! It s a great way to meet some fellow members show support to your post and donate to a worthwhile veteran s charity! Our meeting time has officially changed to 7pm in the hopes that more of you will be able to join us after work and share any of your thoughts on how to make our auxiliary even better this year. We are also looking for fun ideas to help celebrate the upcoming Veterans Day in November. Please come every fourth Tuesday to contribute ideas. 7 VFW TROOP SUPPORT Our members offer support to the military community in many different ways, whether that means helping military families get through long deployments or hosting send-off and welcome home events. The VFW knows how important troop support is because all of our members have been there. PROGRAMS INCLUDE: Military Assistant Program (MAP) is the outstretched hand between the local VFW and military community, offering support around the world. Since 2005, MAP has sponsored events supporting over 2 million service members and their families. A large part of MAP is the Adopt-a-Unit program, providing VFW Posts and their Auxiliaries the opportunity to adopt hundreds of military units around the world. Adopt-a-Unit s goal is to develop supportive relationships with units before, during and after deployments to help deliver the vast network of resources the VFW has available to the military. That s why in 1996 we launched the VFW Operation Uplink program -- a calling program for deployed service members that provides free phone time to active-duty military personnel and hospitalized veterans. For more information visit: uplink@vfw.org VFW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS VOICE OF DEMOCRACY: Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 40, grade students from across the country enter to win their share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through this program. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The theme is AMERICAN HISTORY: OUR HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. Deadline is October 31. Visit the VFW website and download the entry form and brochure. PATRIOT PEN: Each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW s Patriot s Pen youth essay contest. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. The essay encourages young minds to examine America s history along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme.
