1 2019 Dubois County Fire School Class Descriptions *FO-1 Fire Officer I Class Price $225 Prerequisites: Firefighter II for 1yr, Instructor I, & Strategy & Tactics (FOST) Description: This course will cover the requirements for certification as NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I. This course will help the Company Officer command the initial response and to manage numerous aspects associated with the daily operations of the Fire Company. Topics Include: Role of the Fire Officer, Developing Effective Communication Skills, Compliance Issues, Accountability Issues, Managing the Safety and Wellness of Fire Service Personnel, Quality Management, Public Fire Safety Education, Progressive Discipline and Performance Appraisals, Building Collapse, Fire Cause and Determination and Incident Command System. *Fire Officer Strategy and Tactics (FOST) Class Price $225 Prerequisites: Mandatory Training or above for 1yr. Description: The most critical time of any structure fire is the first several minutes that companies begin arriving. Where is the fire now? Where is it going? Are the occupants out of the building? Offensive or Defensive? These are some questions you should be asking yourself when filling the role of company officer. The decisions you make will affect the outcome of the incident. Are you prepared to make those decisions? This course is designed for those who already are or aspire to be a company officer. Departments of any size will benefit from this information. We will discuss topics ranging from the initial size-up to overhaul. Participants should have a good understanding of basic firefighting techniques. Projects will be assigned to be completed before the end of class. *FF-07: Mandatory Training/Module A (Dual State Certification Course) Class Price $300 (NOTE: Class limited to 24 students / Friday evenings class sessions) Prerequisites: 18 years of age, a member of an Indiana Fire Department, and have a PSID number. Requirements: Fire Engineering s Handbook for Firefighter I and II w/skills Drills, full turnout gear, including safety glasses, SCBA w/2 extra bottles and laptop or tablet (LAN or Wi-Fi compatible). Practical skills are off-site. Plan for your own transportation. Instructor: Roger D. Kissling, Captain/Safety Officer, Huntingburg VFD. Class description: The Mandatory/Mod A Certification, will provide entry level firefighters, the State required minimum training to participate in on-scene department operations. It will also

2 allow students to continue their training without having to repeat state required course material. This class will be very fast pace, with little to no classroom time being spent on chapter review. Time will be spent concentrating on completion of state required skills, that each student must pass to be allowed to take the written test. On the final day of class each student will be required to take the Mandatory Firefighter/Module A written test. This test will be an online based test. Students are required to do all written test prep, of the required chapters, on their own time. Equipment Needed: SCBA with Extra Bottle Description: This 2 day course will be an intensive hands-on experience with Engine Company Operations. We will be focusing primarily on 2 areas: hose work and search. Day 1 we'll discuss hose loads, deployment & staging, positions on the hose line, advancement techniques, and options for different staffing levels. Day 2 we will cover search techniques, victim removal options, thermal imaging cameras, and fire ground scenarios. There will be zero classroom, so come ready to work! *FF-02 Advanced Extrication Class Price $150 Prerequisite: Experience with Basic Extrication is required. This is a Single Day Course, that will combine classroom training in the A.M. Session and hands-on scenarios in the Evening Session (NIGHT TIME). This course is for responders whom have had some experience with basic extrication and those whom are at an advanced level. Many of us do not get the opportunity to train in a scenario based environment, especially at night. We will bring those challenges to this course. Classroom will begin with the 8:30a.m. session starting at the High School as usual. We will be in the classroom going over the basic safety and concerns for auto extrication along with the added challenges of working extrications at Zero Dark Thirty. A brief update will be given on the changes in the automobile manufacturing world as well as a review of operations during a motor vehicle crash with emphasis on night time operations. Stabilization will be covered

3 more aggressively, as we are seeing an even greater need for stabilizing newer vehicles more than ever. We will break for lunch and then have a short Hands-on session in the field to become familiar with the assortment of equipment on-hand and practice some new techniques along with several stabilization stations. Team work will be emphasized along with leadership to keep the operations under control and moving towards accomplishing the objectives. We will break again around 3p.m. to allow for students to relax and have an early dinner. This course REQUIRES participation, so come ready to work! *FF-06 Forcible Entry Class Price $ 150 Dave Facer is a Captain with the New Albany Fire Department and has been a veteran in Fire and EMS Services for 26 years. His is a certified instructor in Fire, EMS and Technical Rescue. Jake Barnes is the battalion chief of Training for New Albany Fire Department. He has 25 years of fire and EMS experience in civilian and military departments. He is a Fire Instructor II/III and Certified Fire and explosion Investigator. Forcible Entry - You can t fix the problem if you can t get to it. This course teaches the fundamentals of conventional forcible entry along with the finesse techniques of through the lock entry. This 2 day hands on course covers proper technique and use of hand tools, lock pulling equipment and saw work. *FF-05 Fire ground Safety and Survival Class Price $150 Dave Facer is a Captain with the New Albany Fire Department and has been a veteran in Fire and EMS Services for 26 years. His is a certified instructor in Fire, EMS and Technical Rescue. Jake Barnes is the battalion chief of Training for New Albany Fire Department. He has 25 years of fire and EMS experience in civilian and military departments. He is a Fire Instructor II/III and Certified Fire and explosion Investigator. Fire Safety & Survival- What happens if the rescuer needs help? This course teaches you the basics in Bailouts, SCBA air management as well as The Denver and Columbus Drills and other life saving measures. This is 2 day of hands on training!. *IST-01 Instructor I Class Price $225 Prerequisites: Firefighter II for 1 yr Instructor: Patrick Fisher is a 15 year student of the fire service. He began his career with the Marrs Township Fire Department in Posey County as a volunteer firefighter and first responder. Today he serves as a firefighter/emt for Scott Township Fire and EMS. He is also a quality assurance agent and training program developer the State of Indiana s Fire and Public Safety Training Academy serves as the District 10 Training Council s Chairman.

4 Description: This course is organized to address the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualification NFPA This course has been approved by the Board of Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education for certification as NFPA Fire Instructor I. This course in IFSAC accredited eligible. *AM-01 Instructor In-Service Class Price $40 Prerequisites: Fire Instructor Description: This seminar meets or exceeds the adult continuing education requirements for Instructor recertification. Additionally, this seminar will discuss, demonstrate and articulate the latest instructional techniques that impact the Instructors ability to deliver high quality, consistent and pertinent educational content. *INV-01 Fire Investigator I Class Price $250 Instructor: Matt E. Wells South Assistant Chief Office of the State Fire Marshal/Investigation Division Indiana Department of Homeland Security This course will be an intense class that will require a significant amount of time of self-study by the student outside of the classroom. The course text book will be NFPA 921, 2017 Edition and NFPA 1033, 2014 Edition. Classroom instruction will reinforce topics important to the curriculum. There will be outside scene examinations regardless of the weather. Upon successful completion of practical skills and the written test students will receive State of Indiana Fire Investigator 1 certification. Students will need laptops, portable storage device (thumb drive), and digital camera.

5 *FF-08 Advanced RIT Class Price $175 Advanced RIT will teach rapid intervention skills in 3 stages: Firefighter Survival, Firefighter Rescue, and Rapid Intervention Team Operations. First, the focus will be building prevention skills into each firefighter and preparing them to be members of a RIT. Secondly, the student will spend time learning the individual techniques and skills involved in firefighter rescue. Also, the student will learn the positions, assignments, and fire ground operations of RIT (proactive tasks, tool use, staging, and more) of a rapid intervention team. Lastly, the students will participate in scenarios to combine all skills learned, under realistic fire ground conditions, while operating as a RIT in response to a fire ground MAYDAY. Skills include but not limited to: SCBA emergencies, MAYDAY, disorientation emergencies, emergency air supply, searching for a firefighter, assessing and packaging a firefighter, drags and carries, ladder rescues, rescues from entanglements, restricted areas, performing as RIT officer, navigation/air supply, search and rescue of a MAYDAY firefighter. FULL PPE, SCBA and SPARE BOTTLE REQUIRED *WR-01 Water Rescue (Non-State Certified) Class Price $75 The class will introduce the first responder to several basic shore-based water rescue techniques. The class will include a class room portion and a hand on practical exercise on the Patoka River weather permitting using a Jim buoy to rescue a victim from a low head dam and the use of throw bags techniques. Students will receive a basic knowledge of how to read the river and the power of moving water. Note this is not a certified course *ISO Safety Officer I Class Price $225 Prerequisites: Fire Officer I Provides fire personnel knowledge/skills for Safety Officer outlined in NFPA 1521 Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer Professional Qualifications. The goal of this course is to prepare students whom will be designated by an incident commander (IC) as the incident safety officer (ISO). This course will teach students how to monitor the various types of incidents including Fire, EMS, Technical Rescue, and Hazardous Materials scenes, and report to the IC the status of conditions, hazards, and risks present. It also covers accident investigation and review procedures as well as how to develop and participate in a post-incident analysis. Additionally, it will examine the Health and Safety Officer's role in identifying, evaluating, and implementing policy and procedures that affect health and safety aspects for emergency responders. Risk analysis, wellness and other occupational safety issues will be the main emphasis of the class. Students attending this course should have a working knowledge of the Incident Command System, applicable NFPA and OSHA requirements and recommendations, and responsibility for setting policy for the department on such issues.

6 *Helicopter/REC Electric Safety Class Price $40 The aircraft course will cover the following items: 1. Appropriate utilization of aircraft resources 2. Effective Landing Zone command strategies 3. Use of GPS when identifying potential LZ 4. Effective comms methods / strategies for LZ command 5. Safe operations around the aircraft 6. Fire suppression and rescue tactics for downed aircraft 7. Hands-on aircraft tour (weather / mission permitting)
