General membership meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at various locations published in Anchor Lines. Executive Committee meetings are held the first Thursday of the month, at 1900 (7 p.m.), at the Livonia Public Library, 5 Mile Rd., between Merriman and Farmington Roads., Livonia, Michigan, or at other locations as announced in Anchor Lines. 3 Anchor Lines 3 COMMANDER S DEPARTMENT Our goals for the year: 1) Plan and execute an exciting, fun, and smoothly-run Fall Conference 2) Education: a. teach safe boating classes as scheduled b. three of four available seminars (stretch goal: teach all four) 3) Add five members to the Squadron (3% growth) 4) Attend key spring and fall conference seminars and share what is learned 5) Make honor roll for navigational co-operative charting 6) Complete five vessel safety checks for each certified inspector 7) Have a presentation for general membership meetings 8) Conduct non-boating events, including a. June 2 Commander s Ball b. August 25 Steak Roast 9) Summer boating activities yet to be defined 10) Maintain awards in journalism and web page These will be our primary goals for the year and will keep us busy. I know we will have fun in the process. Congratulations to the Anchor Lines team for earning the Distinction in Journalism Award. We re in the midst of teaching quite a few classes, and summer will be here before we know it. Cdr Jana Smith, AP ADMINISTRATIVE DEPARTMENT I can see the grass peeking from under the leftover snow, must be spring. The D9 Spring conference in Lansing is behind us now and as usual Lt Celeste Hoitash, S, P/C Fred Hoitash, AP, and the usual suspects have made the Dearborn Squadron presence a success as they have made us accustomed to, so thank you again. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to attend due to my workload hopefully I will have a better chance for the Fall Conference. Just to give everybody some information about what is happening, I am trying to get some presentations to attend our meetings and talk to us about topics that will interest the members and contribute to safe boating education, so please if you have any suggestions, or would like to hear about a certain topic, let me know and I will do my best to make that happen. On another note, I have to get on my soap box and talk about the web (did you expect anything else?). I have made some changes to the website and would like to get your input and suggestions and any topics that we can post. A new page is the meeting minutes page, which, at this point will be accessible only by the bridge until we finalize the For Members Only page then members will have access to the minutes, Roster and other things that will be exclusively for members. While you are getting ready for the Boating season, remember the Vessel safety checks and soon will start talking about the season rendezvous. Lt/C Al Habbal, AP

4 4 Anchor Lines EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT Well, I just got back from the Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, Florida. After a week in the Florida sun I can t wait for Spring. So what s new! The new JN will be on the shelf in March, so we should be able to offer JN in the Fall. The new Seamanship course is ready for prime time. Marine Electronics will be new for 2007 and will be divided into three parts: MARINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS; MARINE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS; MARINE ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS. Members can take any two of these for the ME course credit. USPS will offer four levels of boat operator certification courses. The first will be Inland Waterways. More on this later. Within the next two months more Seminars will be added: BOAT HANDLING UNDER POWER, SAIL TRIM, and KNOTS, BENDS AND HITCHES, with more to follow. The three year waiver measure was passed, so if you know any knowledgeable boaters who want to join the Squadron, but did not want to take a basic boating class, now is the time to get them to sign up. My goals as Educational Officer and Member Involvement Chairperson: 1. Find new places to teach our public boating classes 2. Increase our membership by offering more boating courses and seminars. 3. With the help of members, get new members involved so they will see how much fun they can have by becoming involved in the squadron. KNOW WHAT COUNTS! No matter what you ve done for yourself or for humanity, if you can t look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished? Lee Iacocca. Lt/C Frank Muylaert, AP LAST HORIZON We regret to announce the recent death of Lew Miller, N. He had been suffering from emphysema for many years. The funeral was on February 23, Lew was very active in the Squadron, joining in 1975 and being awarded 17 Merit Marks. He will be missed by many. AUGUST RENDEZVOUS Grosse Ile Power and Sail Squadron has made arrangements at Jefferson Marina for a get-together on AUGUST for anybody that wants to come. Requirements are as follows: Each squadron is to list the boat s owner, size and number. They are to collect $25.00 per night (2) for each boat coming. That's right. It doesn't matter what size boat you have, it's $25.00 a night. The marina only wants the size to arrange for slips. Side note: We are going to charge our people $30-35 so that we can get donuts, bagels, coffee etc. for Sunday Cdr Heather McHugh, AP GIPSS

5 6 Anchor Lines EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT Did you ever have a dream where you re out boating in wonderful weather only to wake up and realize it s still the middle of winter? That dream came to me last month at the Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, Florida. My dream became reality when I had to fly back to Michigan and leave the high 70 degree weather and return to sleet and freezing rain. As I looked out over the St. John s River it suddenly hit me that the locals get to boat all year long. That is truly a dream of us Midwesterners. Oh well Like to plan ahead? Below is a list of the upcoming National Meeting dates and places: Sept. 4-7, 2007 Norfolk, VA Governing Board Feb , 2008 Dallas TX Annual Meeting Sept. 3-8, 2008 Detroit, MI Governing Board Feb , 2009 Anaheim, CA Annual Meeting Sept. 6-15, 2009 Kansas City, MO Governing Board Jan. 30-Feb. 7, 2010 Orlando, FL Annual Meeting Jan. 29-Feb. 6, 2011 Orlando, FL Annual Meeting (The last two meetings listed (Orlando) will be held on the grounds of Disney World.) RECREATIONAL BOATING SAFETY COMMITTEE R/C Elliott L. Manke, JN, reported that with the National Safe Boating Council and the US Coast Guard, it has also been a very PROMOTIONAL year as to the wearing of PFDs. A new endeavor, PFD SHOW- BOARDS project, is underway this current year, being introduced to the membership at the annual meeting. Also, last year RBSC continued its co-operative program with the US Coast Guard in their America s Waterway Watch under the Homeland Security Act. Want more information on safe boating? Go to the following website: COOPERATIVE CHARTING COMMITTEE R/C Ed Summer, JN, reported that the committee has been hard at work with two new partners, Maptech and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to have a program from each ready to be placed in operation 1 March Total participation is down considerably this year. Nautical participation was down 20% with Honor Roll achievement down 30%. Geodetics participation was down 50% with Honor Roll achievement down 75%. After long consideration, consultations and discussions with many people and because of poor participation, lack of funding, and serious questions about the quality of submissions by USPS, the decision was made to withdraw from this program effective 31 March Maptech is providing a web site known as Boating Guide to America. USPS will provide the input data to create the document for keeping this web site current. The reporting site will be developed by Maptech and USPS will be the supplier of data regarding recreational boating. This program should go live 1 April Maptech will develop an awards program for this effort. VESSEL SAFETY CHECK COMMITTEE Vessel Safety Check 2006 year-end totals show 2,479 Vessel Examiners completing 30,294 safety checks. On-line reporting has reduced the work load on the National Headquarters staff, as well as reduced expenses on both the Squadron and District levels. Like to shop?
