3 Commandant s Corner ATTENTION ON DECK It s springtime again and all that means Collection Time. We need all members to sign up for one of the collection locations. See Gerry Gerling, Lyle McFarlin, or Mike Moss to sign up. (The Following is an extract from March). I invite you to contact me by phone, or , thermalflyr@yahoo.com, to share your ideas as to how we can make your experience with the detachment more meaningful. Ed Rau Commandant Pvt. George Phillips Detachment 1214 Marine Corps League Military Humor: On April 8, 1968, I enlisted in the Marine Corps during Easter Vacation of my senior year at Lutheran High School North in St. Louis, Missouri. After vacation when I shared my news with my high school speech class, one wise-cracking class-mate sang the first line of the Marine Corps Hymn to the tune, Oh my darling Clementine. Strange but true, From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli does work. Sometime later, along the same line I noticed that the letters M-I-C- K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E in the Mickey Mouse Club March could be substituted with the letters M-A-R-I- N-E-C-O-R-P-S. Which only goes to show how great family values icons and themes can march to the same tune Carl Ramsey, newsletter, editor. 4 MEMBERS MATTER Richard, Rick Shelton by Lyle McFarlin I was born on 15 May 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri. I have two older sisters. I went to Cleveland High School in St. Louis. l dropped out and joined the Marine Corps in April, I went to Boot Camp in San Diego, California. I then went to Refueling School in San Diego and was then sent to Cherry Point, North Carolina to the 2nd Marine Corps Air Wing where I refueled aircraft. I refueled C-130s, AV8A Harriers, F-14 Tomcats and once I refueled Air Force One, 1 when it came to Cherry Point. I came out of the Corps after two and a half years. 2 I picked up jobs here and there. I had married my first wife, Karen while I was in the Corps. We had three kids and later were divorced. I married my wife Debbie forty-two years ago and we had four kids. My first wife, Karen, remarried and was later killed by her second husband, pushed down concrete steps when she threatened divorce. Debbie and I then took the three kids from my earlier marriage, have four of our own, and we now have seven kids between us. I was working for a member of the Busch family in Santa Barbara, California. And then we returned to St. Louis to be near our kids as they began giving us grandchildren. I worked at Grants Farm for twenty-three years and currently manage an estate for a private individual. As for our grandkids, we have seven boys and two girls. I have no special hobbies. I joined Private George Phillips Detachment of the Marine Corps League, when I found them on the internet. I enjoy my association with Marines and their families and currently serve as the Detachment Quartermaster. I joined the Marine Corps when I was seventeen and essentially grew up in the Corps. I believe I joined to get away from the crowd of kids I was growing up with. Most of them are now dead or in prison. I am Richard Rick Shelton Rick Shelton, September 20, 2016, currently serving as quartermaster. 11 One of two Boeing 707s in the 1960s and 1970s. 2 Two and half years after April 1970, would be October 1972.
5 Detachment Activity since last Meeting. Lady s Auxiliary St. Patrick s Day Party, March 9, One last generous event before going inactive after April Meeting. I learned most ML detachments aren t blessed with an auxiliary. The word auxiliary comes from the ancient Roman Army and meant helps. It referred to soldiers with special skills such as Marines, archers, slingers, engineers, light infantry, and cavalry. So, our ladies sprang into service from a great tradition and will be greatly missed. Thank you card that arrived in response to our support of the O Neill Open Golf Tournament that took place, Friday, September 28, See below. On March 23, 2019, newsletter editor Carl Ramsey was invited to receive historical magazines from Iwo Jima veteran Deward Terry. Deward was on Iwo, from February 19, 1945, until 2-3 days before the end, on March 26.
