1 5 th ANNUAL GA SEASON KICK-OFF AFJROTC DRILL AND PHYSICAL TRAINING COMPETITION STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES Saturday, September 26, General: a. The purpose of this standard operating procedure (SOP) is to establish policies and procedures for the efficient management and control of the Veterans High School Air Force Junior ROTC Season Kick-off Competition. b. The Season Kick-off Drill and Physical Training Competition will be held at Veterans High School. The entry fee is $ per school. Please make your check payable to VHS AFJROTC and mail it to VHS AFJROTC, 340 Piney Grove Road, Kathleen, GA c. Unit advisors are responsible for insuring all competition meet information reaches their teams. The final responsibility for interpretation of this SOP rests with the Drill Meet Coordinator. 2. Team Competition: a. This meet is open to all Military JROTC units that register. b. Scoring evaluation for the drill portion of this meet will be based on standards contained in AFMAN , AFI , AFOATSI , AFM , and the Consolidated Guide. d. INSPECTION/REGULATION team size will be twelve (12) members, plus a commander. EACH TEAM MUST HAVE FOUR (4) ELEMENTS FOR INSPECTION, but may drill with either three (3) or four (4) elements. d. EXHIBITION team size will be a minimum of nine (9) members plus commander. e. COLOR GUARDS must have four (4) members, including the commander (carrying the national colors), and must use rifles (demilitarized or facsimile). f. PHYSICAL COMPETITION is open to one (1) team per event, per school. EACH TEAM MUST BE CO-EDUCATIONAL. At least one (1) team member must be of the opposite sex from the other team members for push-ups, sit-ups, and 1 mile relay. 1

The categories of drill competition are: (1) Unarmed Regulation Inspection (2) Unarmed Regulation Drill (3) Color Guard (4) Unarmed Exhibition (5) Armed Regulation (6) Outstanding Commander Award (7) Armed Exhibition (8) Overall Drill Champion (School) h. The categories of physical training competition are: (1) Push-ups (2) Sit-ups (3) 1 Mile Relay (4) Overall PT Champion (School) i. Individual teams will compete for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place category awards. Schools will compete for overall awards. 3. Briefing and Sequencing: a. A representative from each participating unit will sign their school in at the registration table between 0720 and Team order of sequence for each drill competition event will be distributed at sign-in. b. There will be no Commander s Call. Schools should check in at the registration desk upon arrival. Drill competition questions should be asked at this time not when your team is competing! e. There are no opening ceremonies. Teams should be ready to compete at their scheduled time. 4. Performance Order: a. The first color guard and drill team scheduled to perform will be in their respective performance/inspection area no later than The second teams to perform will proceed directly to their respective ready areas. All remaining teams must remain outside the drill areas until their scheduled performance times. All teams will perform in their designated areas. b. Regulation and exhibition teams will be performing simultaneously after the first half-hour of competition. It is imperative that teams meet their scheduled performance times or risk elimination from the event. 5. Uniforms: a. During the drill meet, all cadets will wear the uniform in compliance with AFROTCI and AFI The service dress uniform will be worn during 2

3 inspection, unarmed regulation drill performance (other services will wear a compatible uniform), color guard, and armed regulation. Name tags are not required for color guard or armed regulation. b. Uniforms for exhibition phase of competition may be any HQ/AFJROTC approved uniform. c. Cords maybe worn, however, if one member wears a cord, all members must wear a cord. Berets and helmets are not authorized under any circumstances. d. Shoes: Must be issue leather type for both male and female cadets. Artificial high gloss or patent footwear not issued by AFJROTC is not authorized for wear during the drill meet. e. Boots: May be worn for Color Guard or Exhibition events only. They must be bloused and worn by all team members during their particular competition event. Artificial high gloss or patent footwear not issued by AFJROTC is not authorized for wear during the drill competition. All bootlaces must be of the same color. f. Cadets will wear all authorized badges, ribbons, patches, and insignia in compliance with AFJROTC and AFI Insignia, rank, lapel, and hat insignia must be authorized and placed on uniform in accordance with AFJROTC directives. No medals will be worn. All cadets on all marching teams in all events will wear the official AFJROTC shoulder patch and unit patch (if any). 6. Inspection: Inspection will precede the team s unarmed regulation performance. a. Teams should enter the inspection area from the ready area in line formation 3 wide by 4 deep. The first team scheduled to perform will proceed to the inspection area. The team will then prepare for inspection in accordance with Air Force and AFJROTC regulations. Inspection will be conducted in the cafeteria. b. The drill team commander will march the team into the inspection area at the direction of the Head Inspector. The commander will execute OPEN RANKS and then report in to the head inspector. The entire team will then be inspected. The Head Inspector will notify the commander when inspection is complete. The commander will then report out and give the command CLOSE RANKS MARCH and move the team out of the inspection area. c. If teams are not in place at the ready area when required, one PA call will be made. If the team does not respond in a reasonable time, the judges will disqualify the team from that competition event. 7. Unarmed-Regulation Drill: a. The commands attached are the drill movements required for Unarmed Regulation Drill (NO PROMPT SHEETS CAN BE USED). The commands are to be given in the sequence listed. The maximum time limit for this drill event is 7 minutes; starting when the first team member (not counting the commander) enters the field. The time ends when the last member of the team exits the drill area. There is no minimum time for accomplishing the sequence. Any use of musical 3

4 devices, whistles or other noise making devices or non-standard equipment will result in the disqualification of that team from this event. The drill field is 80 by 50 feet and will be located in the gym. b. For every command omitted there will be a 5-point penalty. For every command added there will be a 5-point penalty. If a team has a boundary violation there will be a 2-point penalty, per cadet, per occurrence. If a team goes over the established time limit one (1) point will be subtracted for each second over. c. The Drill Team Commander will report in to the Head Judge and request permission to begin. When the Head Judge salutes the Commander, he or she will then give the command Fall In, and continue the sequence of commands. When the Drill sequence is complete, the Commander will halt the unit centered on the Head Judge, report the sequence finished and request permission to exit the drill area. If a commander fails to report in or out, a 10-point penalty will be assessed. 8. Armed-Regulation Drill: a. The commands attached are the drill movements required for Armed Regulation Drill (NO PROMPT SHEETS CAN BE USED). The commands are to be given in the sequence listed. The maximum time limit for this drill event is 5 minutes; starting when the first team member (not counting the commander) enters the field. The time ends when the last member of the team exits the drill area. There is no minimum time for accomplishing the sequence. Weapons must be all of like model, they will not be mixed. The drill field is 80 by 50 feet and will be located in the gym. **Depending on the number of regulation drill and armed regulation drill teams entered, this event may be moved outdoors. If the use of the outdoor drill field is required, ALL TEAMs will be scheduled for inspection and unarmed regulation BEFORE performing outdoors. b. For every command omitted there will be a 5-point penalty. For every command added there will be a 5-point penalty. If a team has a boundary violation there will be a 2-point penalty, per cadet, per occurrence. If a team goes over the established time limit one (1) point will be subtracted for each second over. c. 5 9. Unarmed and Armed Exhibition Drill: a. Team commanders may not use whistles, noisemakers, etc. to direct their teams during this phase of the competition. b. There is a 5-minute minimum and an 8-minute maximum time limit for exhibition drill. Timing will start when the first team member steps onto the drill area following the team commander s report and stop when the last team member has exited the drill area. The head judge may be requested to be positioned at any specific position on the field. The drill field is 80 by 50 feet. Exhibition drill will be conducted outside unless inclement weather is present. Backup exhibition drill pad is the band room. 10. Color Guard Competition: a. The color guard competition will run concurrently with the drill competition. There is a 5 minute time limit for the color guard drill sequence and time will start and stop on completion of reporting in/out. b. The color guard drill sequence is attached. The drill field is 40 x 30 and will be in the theater. 11. Knock-out Drill: a. The Individual Drill Regulation (IDR) competition will be held after the PT competition is completed and is open to everyone, free of charge. A military uniform (service dress, exhibition uniform, or PT gear) is required to participate in IDR. IDR will take place in the main gym before the awards ceremony (which is scheduled to begin at 1500). 12. Physical Training Competition: a. The PT competition will be held throughout the day. The sit-ups and push-ups will be held in designated classrooms near the main gym. The mile relay will be held at the track after the other events are completed and before IDR. Each school may enter only one team in each event. b. All competitors must be in Air Force Junior ROTC PT clothing or school T-shirts. Team members must all be dressed the same. To prevent injuries, only athletic shoes will be allowed. If unable to get Air Force Junior ROTC PT shorts, cadets can wear sport briefs or shorts issued by your unit. c. The PT events sign-up sheet is attached. Events will consist of: (1) Push-ups teams will consist of four (4) cadets and must be co-ed. Each competitor will be given 2 minutes to perform as many push-ups as they can. In order for a push-up to count a 90 degree bend in the elbow while keeping their back straight will be required. Resting will be done in the up position and counting will stop if any body part other than feet and hands contacts the ground. (2) Sit-ups teams will consist of four (4) cadets and must be co-ed. Each competitor will be given 2 minutes to perform as many sit-ups as they can. In order for a sit-up to count arms must be kept on the chest and elbows must touch the knees. Resting will be done in the up position. 5

6 (3) 1-mile relay teams will be co-ed and consist of 3 cadets (2 runners will run a ¼ mile and the other will run a ½ mile leg). Batons will be handed off in designated zones. 13. Awards: After all competition has been completed the team commanders will assemble in uniform on the field for presentation of awards and closing ceremonies. Teams will fall in formation behind the commanders. The highest score from each school for each drill and PT category will be used to compute overall champions. If a school does not compete in a category they will receive a zero in that category towards the overall championship. Awards and/or trophies for drill will be presented as follows: (1) Unarmed Regulation Inspection 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (2) Unarmed Regulation Drill 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (3) Color Guard 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th (4) Unarmed Exhibition 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (5) Armed Regulation 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (6) Armed Exhibition 1 st, 2 nd (7) IDR ` 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (8) Outstanding Commander Award 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (9) Overall Drill Champion (School) 1 st, 2 nd Awards and/or trophies for PT will be presented as follows: (1) Push-ups 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (2) Sit-ups 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (3) 1 Mile Relay 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd (4) Overall PT Champion (School) 1 st, 2 nd The overall meet champion and runner-up will receive trophies as well. 14. Additional Information: a. SASI/ASIs are responsible for the actions of their teams and guests. Uniforms, including headgear, will be worn properly at all times. No cursing, smoking, fraternizing, littering, etc. will be tolerated and could result in a team s disqualification. We strongly recommend instructors restrict their team members to the school grounds for the period of the meet. b. No one will be allowed in the scoring room unless they are asked to report there by one of the judges or the meet coordinator. c. Team advisors, cadets not directly involved with the competition, and parents will not be allowed on the drill fields without the permission of the head judge. d. Security of all valuables and equipment is the sole responsibility of the teams. Separate changing areas for both male and female cadets will be available. No personal items will be left in the changing areas. 6
