The Cape Atlantic Detachment Marines answered the call and made a lot of children happy on Christmas summary: Two to four toys per child, plus reading books, crafts, coloring books, crayons, puzzles, family games, stuff animals, balls, stocking stuffers, camera, hair brushes, clothes, bikes, head sets, skate boards, big wheels, watches, MP3 players head phones, etc. 1,097 families - averaged 3.5 children per household = children 10 pieces per child x = 38,395 pieces Twenty three charities times an average of 200 pieces each = pieces Total pieces 42,995 In storage for pieces Thanks go out to Joe Ballentine, for stepping up and leading the charge, Maureen Ballentine, Alisa Owen, Joe Patrick, Lou Verruni, Bill McGinley, Joe Hiers, Dick Bullock, Mo Loveland, Lincoln Harold, Ed & Pat Link, Bob & Marie Moran, Bob McCarty, Doug Rattazzi, Pat Scannell, Tom Walsh, Jordan Kleinman, Ron Powell, Ike Rucker, Rich Tuthill, the airmen from the 177th Fighter Group of the NJ Air National Guard and all the volunteers that came out and help make it a success! ooo-rah 1

7 Back at the Bunker...T4T trailer packed & loaded for next year Building/Grounds Building & Grounds: in case you wondered, everything is winterized: hose spigot shutoff, "Stabil" added to gasoline in tractor and gas can in shed, lawnmower battery removed and placed on trickle charger in Bunker. Now things are slowing down, the holidays are over and 2016 Toys for Tots is completed. Hopefully next month (February) we can start cleaning up and straightening up the kitchen, volunteers welcome. 8 Scouts: Our Boy Scout Troop 97 is currently in limbo. According to Boy Scout Council there are certain regulations that may prevent our troop from re-chartering do to the number of scouts and their ranks. I'll keep you posted as to how it develops. Awaiting a new date for our Scout, CJ Cress' Eagle Court of Honor. We had three scouts and a scout leader help out on our "night shift" with Toys For Tots. Brian Houf Jr., Jeremy Stimax, Stephen Conner and Leader Palmer Stimax. Our Brownie Troop are still working on their Celebrating Community badge which includes honoring the American Flag. On December 6th; Bob McCarty and his grandson Devin, a boy scout with Troop 76, demonstrated how to fold the American flag. The Brownies plan on finishing the badge requirements this spring with a field trip. They are currently working on their financial badge which coincides with Girl Scout Cookie Sales which starts January 19th. The Brownies will be having a campout in the Bunker on Friday night, January 27 and working on badge requirements on Saturday. Semper Fi Bob McCarty New Members Kitchen Robert Walton paid up his dues and is now back on board. Welcome back Robert! Volunteers are always needed in the kitchen. Let us know if you can help. A kitchen Team with meeting & event setup, take-down, Mess and kitchen clean-up duties needs to be formed. The more members we get on the team, the lest work they will all have to do. Team work pays. 9 Good of the League Marines, the Leadership School of the Marine Corps League will be held on April 1st. Below is the form that needs to0 filled out sent in ASAP, as the class fills up fat. The $37.00 will be refunded to you after you complete the class. The class is all day and is held at the NJ State Police Academy. 9

13 VA To Eliminate 7 Compensable Disabilities December 12, 2016 Not all service-connected medical conditions and injuries are incurred or exacerbated in the performance of military duties. For example, a qualifying injury can occur when a service member was at home or on leave, and a qualifying medical condition, such as multiple sclerosis, can develop independently of a service member s military duties. In 2015, VA paid 716,000 veterans a total of $3.7 billion, the Congressional Budget Office estimates, to compensate for seven of the medical conditions that, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), military service is unlikely to cause or aggravate. Those conditions are arteriosclerotic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Crohn s disease, hemorrhoids, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, and uterine fibroids. Beginning in January 2018, this option would cease veterans disability compensation for those seven medical conditions GAO identified. Under the option, veterans now receiving compensation for those conditions would have their compensation reduced or eliminated, and veterans who applied for compensation for those conditions in the future would not be eligible for it. The option would not alter DoD s disability compensation system, which focuses on fitness for military duties rather than compensation for disabilities. An argument in support of this option is that it would make the disability compensation system for military veterans more comparable to civilian systems. Few civilian employers offer long-term disability benefits, and among those that do, benefits do not typically compensate individuals for all medical problems that developed during employment. An argument against this option is that military service is not like a civilian job; instead, it confers unique benefits to society and imposes extraordinary risks on service members. By that logic, the pay and benefits that service members receive should reflect the hardships of military life, including compensating veterans who become disabled in any way during their military service.
