1 CITY OF MYRTLE POINT Invites applications for the position of: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator SALARY: $3,199 - $4,210 monthly ($ $24.29 per hour) OPENING DATE: 10/3/2017 CLOSING DATE: Open until filled THE POSITION: The City of Myrtle Point collects and treats domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater from within the city limits. There are approximately 1,000 properties served by the system and a population of 2,525 persons. The Wastewater Treatment Plant, constructed in 2016, consists of a dual basin activated sludge plant utilizing BIOWORKS treatment equipment. The process includes screening and grit removal, aeration by floating fine-bubble diffusers, sludge removal in four upflow clarifiers, and ultraviolet disinfection. Final solids handling includes the capability to produce Class A biosolids utilizing a heated screw press. The plant has the latest in automation allowing control of all functions from the SCADA system or mobile devices linked to the system. The wastewater collection system is primarily by gravity but includes three pump stations to provide service to areas where gravity service is not feasible. Flows in the system have significant seasonal variation based on rainfall. The design average dry weather flow (ADWF) of the plant is 0.18 MGD while the design peak instantaneous flow (PIF) is 4.4 MGD. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for daily operation of the treatment plant, general maintenance of plant equipment and grounds, and coordination with Public Works staff for equipment repairs and large scale maintenance as necessary. 2 Page 2 of 2 QUALIFICATIONS: GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Knowledge and experience applying federal and state regulations pertaining to wastewater treatment and collections. 2. Knowledge and experience operating and maintaining wastewater treatment, disinfection and biosolids equipment. 3. Ability and experience troubleshooting operational problems and acting quickly and decisively to bring systems back to normal state. 4. Ability and experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 5. Ability and experience analyzing data, drawing accurate conclusions, recording findings, and making appropriate operational changes. 6. Ability and experience using computer software applications related to the work: SCADA, spreadsheet, word processing and maintenance management systems. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS/LICENSURE 1. A valid Oregon Drivers License is required and acceptable driving record at the time of hire. 2. Employee shall possess and retain minimum Grade 3 certification in Wastewater Treatment. The City of Myrtle Point will consider applicants with less than Grade 3 certification provided they actively pursue obtaining a Grade 3 certificate. Responsible for ensuring that the day-to-day operation of the wastewater treatment plant remains in compliance with state and federal regulations and the permit under which the treatment plant operates (to the extent capable). SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Reports to and receives administrative direction from the Public Works Director. Coordinates with Relief Operator and public works employees assigned to wastewater treatment plant operations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include, but are not exclusively limited to, the following. Other duties may be assigned. Be at work on time. Be available for work. Give a full day s work. Respond in a positive manner to directions Learn present job as well as new jobs. Adjust to change. Get along with others Know and follow the rules, policies, practices and department procedures. Be willing to respond to emergency call-outs. Assist in the department budget preparation and purchasing decisions. Maintain inventory of materials and equipment associated with the WWTP. Coordinate daily and weekly work activities for the wastewater treatment plant. Collect samples, perform tests, adjust chlorine levels, regulate plant discharge. Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled laboratory and maintenance work I the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment plant. Monitor the performance of the treatment plant for compliance with state and federal requirements. Collect samples and identify concentrations of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of wastewater as required by local state and federal regulations.

Monitor, record and report data concerning operations of wastewater treatment facilities. QUALIFICATION To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Passing a pre-employment drug screening is required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operation and construction. Working knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to collect accurate samples and to perform the necessary chemical, physical or biological tests. Computer Literacy LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write detailed correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS A valid State of Oregon Motor Vehicles Drivers license is required. Employee shall possess and retain a Level III state certification in Wastewater Treatment, and at least a Level I certification in Water Treatment. Employee will be encouraged to continue with higher level certifications as deemed warranted by the department director.
