1 Barracks Bulletin October 2018 Samuel F. Gearhart Detachment PO Box Business 50 West Jefferson City, MO USMC (8762) Greg Craig, Editor Detachment Officers Greg Craig, Commandant Bill Koonce, Sr. Vice Commandant Bill Plate, Jr. Vice Commandant David Hunter, Judge Advocate Open, Adjutant Harold Faughn, Paymaster Stan Scott, Chaplain Steve Baskette, Sergeant-at-Arms Matt Jorgenson, Jr. Past Commandant mw Open, Auditor 3 year Jim Williams, Auditor 2 year Jim Claus, Auditor 1 year Auxiliary Dotty Sanning, President mclaux2012@gmail.com From the Commandant Hello Marines, Auxiliary and Associate Members, The end of each year is filled with a lot of excitement especially when you think of sports. It s the time of the year when the baseball and football seasons overlap. The weather starts to cool down and a lot of outdoor activities are brought inside. The holiday season blows through our lives and we enjoy the many celebrations with friends and families alike. Unfortunately, this is the time of the year when a lot of military families struggle. Loved ones are separated as the commitment to serve the country calls its members to all points of the world. We are blessed to be holding down the home front. Therefore, once again, I challenge the hearts and mind of every member of the SFG Detachment to give whatever time you have to help strengthen our resolve to serve our community throughout the year. What an honor we have to support the active duty, reserve and their family members in Mid- Missouri! A special thanks to everyone who supported the BBQ that was held on 9/22/18. Your dedication is very much appreciated. Please get ready to support the indoor events such as the Monthly Dining Out and our exciting Nights of Trivia. More information to follow Semper Fi, Greg Craig, Commandant SFG Detachment #656 From the Paymaster ALL renewals of $30 were due in August. If you haven t paid your dues: Please send your payment to: PO Box 1592, Jefferson City, Mo or bring to the meeting. Harold Faugh Paymaster

Semper Fi and God Bless, * * * * N O T I C E * * * * The newsletter editor, Sarah Jorgenson, submitted her resignation due to personal commitments. Your Detachment is in need of someone to step up and fulfill this position. Please send your request to the Commandant, if you wish to be considered. Unfortunately, with a total of 10 walkers we had far less participation than needed to garner the media attention we had hoped for, which could have helped bring more attention to this worthwhile cause and perhaps boosted much needed detachment recruiting efforts. Hopefully, we will grow more support next year to help those troops who have sacrificed so much. Fortunately, there is still an opportunity for anyone interested in helping more of our most seriously wounded service members get into Not an actual booking photo, just our own MSgt Claus, aka, Jon Morgan. their own smart homes as donations may still be made for up to 6 weeks following this event. Go to t2trun.com scroll down to JEFFERSON CITY, MO SEPTEMBER 15, 2018, click on the photo for the Registration & Donation page. There you may donate under TEAM S.F. GEARHART DET. MSgt Claus made an appearance in the Governor s Garden for the Tunnel to Towers event too! Not pictured are Greg Craig, Jan Crowe and Dotty Sanning who all took care of the food at the barracks for the post walk/run event. Also putting in, much appreciated, effort on September 15 th was Jr. Vice Commandant, Bill Plate. With no other volunteers he had to set up and man the Detachment s recruiting/raffle sales booth at the Ozark Ham and Turkey Festival in California by himself until two other members were able to join him once they finished with Tunnel to Towers events. We had a great evening for our dining out at Canterbury Hill Winery and could not have asked for better weather for patio dining, particularly in light of the heat earlier in the day. Weather permitting, we may have an opportunity for patio dining at our October destination too. There will most certainly be an opportunity for some great fried chicken, as well as other delicious vittles, whether inside or out. Hopefully some of you will have any opportunity to join us! Sat. October 6 th Volunteers needed - Versailles Apple Festival & Jacobs Cave Swap Meet: We have a few more opportunities to take advantage of another $5,000 to $6,000 we can put in the bank for the Detachment if we have volunteers to help with a few events prior to our Winner s Choice Pistol Drawing. With at least six people to help on October 6 th we would be able to man booths at both the Versailles Apple Festival and the Jacobs Cave Swap Meet just outside of Versailles that day. Set up at the Apple Festival must be completed before 9am with tear down no earlier than 5pm so we would use the same times for the swap meet. If you are able to help with these important efforts for the Detachment contact Alan Sanning at sfgactivities@gmail.com or by phone at as soon as possible. Mon. October 8 th Fall Hayride on Columbus Day sponsored by Central MO Pound #77: Thank you to Pound #77 for sponsoring this family friendly fall event. Check with the kids and grandkids and get your head counts in as soon as possible as the wagon is limited to 20 people. your counts to sfgactivities@gmail.com or by phone to If we do not fill up the wagon by meeting night we will extend the invitation to our list of prospective members the next day. Bring your cooler with food, hot dogs, smore s supplies, drinks (no glass), etc. After about 90 minutes we will load back up for the remainder of the ride and return trip. It is a tradition born at Belleau Wood in the year 1918, of a force in readiness and the "First to Fight". As a Devil Dog, I ask no quarter and give no quarter. I will do everything in my power to uphold the objectives of the Military Order of Devil Dogs and to carry out my duties to a swift and satisfactory completion. From the Auxiliary It is Harvest Time time to harvest your fields and your friendships. We had a successful September BBQ thanks to those that worked and those that came out to purchase meals. The last BBQ is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th. Please bring your availability to the meeting or call/ it to Kris. We are still looking for Christmas parade float ideas but we have secured the towing vehicle and the trailer. Still need help with design. Trivia Night is scheduled for October 20th, put together a team or volunteer to cook. Either way you will definitely learn something that night (costumes are optional and fun). The Toys for Tots fundraiser event is coming up at Wendy's, October 31st - more info will be at the meeting. Amusing Dates to Commemorate: October 13 Navy Birthday, thank you for your service October 16 Bosses Day October 17 Wear Something Gaudy Day October 26 Howl at the Moon Day and Night The USMC Birthday Ball information should be in the newsletter. It is almost time to get your party shoes on! I hope we will have an Auxiliary picture done this year for our scrapbook. Have fun, stay safe and see you at the October meeting. The League is cooking so we get to bring a few desserts. From Harvest of Friendship by D Harris Friendships can come from many places near and far, sometimes even half a world away with faces we cannot see, but their touch we can always feel. 5 9 October 1917: The 8th Marines was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Although the regiment would not see combat in Europe during World War I, the officers and enlisted men of the 8th Marines participated in operations against dissidents in Haiti for over five years during the 1920s. During World War II, the regiment was assigned to the 2d Marine Division and participated in combat operations on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa, and earned three Presidential Unit Citations. Volunteers & walkers - Lake Ozark Marine Pet Leva, CariAnne Behr Huffman, Cathy & Tom Drake, Bill Koonce, Geri Brooks, Darren Reuter, Scott Mayhew Steve Brown, Rita & Steve Diemler, Alan & Jerry Sanning. Marine Corps History: Selected October Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance 1 October 1997: The first African-American female colonel in the Marine Corps was promoted to that rank during a ceremony at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. Colonel Gilda A. Jackson, a native of Columbus, Ohio, made Marine Corps history when she achieved the rank of colonel. She was serving as Special Projects Officer, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing at the time of her promotion. 5 October 1775: Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the 2d Continental Congress used the word "Marines" on one of the earliest known occasions, when it directed General George Washington to secure two vessels on "Continental risque and pay", and to give orders for the "proper encouragement to the Marines and seamen" to serve on the two armed ships. 6 October 1945: Major General Keller E. Rockey, Commanding General, III Amphibious Corps, accepted the surrender of 50,000 Japanese troops in North China on behalf of the Chinese Nationalist government. 8 October 1899: A force of 375 Marines under command of future Commandant George F. Elliott, attacked and captured the insurgent town of Novaleta, Luzon, Philippine Islands, and linked up with U.S. Army troops. There were 11 Marine casualties. 11 October 1951: A Marine battalion was flown by transport helicopters to a frontline combat position for the first time, when HMR-161 lifted the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, and its equipment, during Operation Bumblebee, northeast of Yanggu, Korea. 19 October 1968: Operation Maui Peak, a combined regimental-sized operation which began on 6 October, ended 11 miles northwest of An Hoa, Vietnam. More than 300 enemy were killed in the 13-day operation. 23 October 1983: At 0622 an explosive-laden truck slammed into the BLT headquarters building in Beirut, Lebanon, where more than 300 men were billeted. The massive explosion collapsed the building in seconds, and took the lives of 241 Americans--including 220 Marines. This was the highest loss of life in a single day for Marines since D-Day on Iwo Jima in October 1962: An 11,000-man 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade left Camp Pendleton by sea for the Caribbean during the Cuban Missile Crisis. One week earlier, the entire 189,000-man Marine Corps had been put on alert and elements of the 1st and 2d Marine Divisions were sent to Guantanamo Bay to reinforce the defenders of the U.S. Naval Base. Other 2d Division units and squadrons from five Marine Aircraft Groups were deployed at Key West, Florida, or in Caribbean waters during the Cuban crisis. 31 October 1919: A patrol of Marines and gendarmes, led by Sergeant Herman H. Hanneken, disguised themselves as Cacos and entered the headquarters of the Haitian Caco Leader, Charlemagne Peralte, killing the bandit chief, and dispersing his followers. Sergeant Hanneken and Corporal William R. Button were each awarded the Medal of Honor. Information from Marine Corps University:
