2 2 I. General Description A. Merit Badge University (MBU) MBU is an educational and advancement opportunity open to any active registered Boy Scout, Explorer, or Venture Scout. This event is hosted by the South Georgia Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Location The location for MBU 2019 is at Camp Patten in Lakeland, GA. Refer to map below for directions. Camp Patten is located at 120 GA-135 Loop, Lakeland, GA C. Dates MBU is a full weekend event, March 15-17, Scouts are expected to attend the entire weekend to receive full credit for all merit badges. Scouts should confer with counselors about special arrangements for completing partial merit badges after the class ends.
3 3 II. Administration A. Registration Fee The fee for attending classes at MBU for the weekend is $20 per Scout. All Leaders attending MBU will have a fee of $5. The cost covers all materials unless the Scout is taking a class listed below. Meals are not included in this fee (see below for details). Registration fee does not include the cost of the following (all of which must be paid prior to the event): CPR Certification - $7 Shooting Sports - Rifle $16 Space Exploration - $15 Shotgun $20 Woodcarving - $16 B. Cancellation/Refund Policy Cancellations before March 2 nd will be considered for a full refund less $5 to cover supplies (including the extra fees for merit badge supplies) that have already been purchased. However, in lieu of a refund, the fees can be transferred to another Scout. The Scout may choose classes from a list of any classes still available. All refunds/transfers must be requested in writing. Phone requests will not be acceptable. No refunds will be processed after March 2 nd, C. Visitors If you have visitors over the course of the event, they must check in at the Copeland Center. D. Event Printables MBU will not be providing printed merit badge workbooks, schedules or maps at the event. If you need us to print schedules or maps for you there will be a printing fee of $10 per unit. E. Where to Submit Applications Registration fees will be accepted in person at the South Georgia Council Service Centers (Albany and Valdosta) or can be mailed to the address listed below. Checks should be made payable to Boy Scouts of America or B.S.A. with a comment in the memo line indicating that the check is for MBU. South Georgia Council, BSA Attn. SGC Merit Badge University 1841 Norman Dr Valdosta, GA Valdosta Service Center) (FAX-Valdosta) H. Meals Meals will not be provided at MBU. There will be a Cracker Barrell offered on Friday and Saturday nights. We have scheduled 2 hour meal times throughout the weekend. Troops will cook for themselves during the 2 hour meal periods. This will also give the Scouts a chance to work on their Cooking merit badge.
4 4 III. Program A. Badges Available The merit badges being offered are listed on page 10 of this guide. There will be three class sessions this year. Due to popularity and availability of counselors, some classes will fill up quickly. Scouts who register early have the best chance of getting into the classes they want. Merit Badge worksheets are very helpful and can be downloaded from meritbadge.org and printed out for each merit badge. Please remember that the meritbadge.org website can be inaccurate or outdated. Please refer to the official Boy Scout Requirements handbook for updated requirements. Any prior work the Scout has completed on the merit badge should be filled in prior to class. B. Pre-requisites Scoutmasters should be aware of any prerequisites needed by their Scouts. If these requirements are not completed prior to the event, the Scout will not earn the merit badge at this event. ANY OF THESE REQUIREMENTS MAY BE COMPLETED BY PRESENTING A SIGNED STATEMENT FROM YOUR SCOUTMASTER THAT YOU HAVE DONE THE REQUIREMENTS. C. Class work The Scout is responsible for completing their requirements for the merit badge. Parents and Scout leaders should remind the Scouts that they should take notes and pay attention to their class work assignments. Merit badge worksheets should be filled out during class and the counselor may ask that they be turned in at the end of each session to get credit for work completed. D. Partial Completion If a Scout is unable to complete the merit badge, the PARTIAL completion will be noted in our records. The MBU counselors are seldom available to serve as counselors after MBU ends, unless arrangements are made before which are acceptable to the Scout, their parents, and the counselor. Remember that TWO deep leadership is still required to visit with a counselor. E. Trailblazer Program The Trailblazer program will focus on your new Scouts that are working on their First-Class rank. This program is designed for new or first year Scouts to participate in rank advancement. The Scouts will be placed in a group of other first year Scouts beginning on Saturday morning after breakfast. They will continue with the program throughout the day on Saturday and on Sunday morning. They will be released back to their troops on Saturday after Classes. F. Adult Leadership Training SM/ASM Leader Specific Training: This training is open to all adult leaders on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. There is no cost for this training. You can register for this training on sgcbsa.org.
5 5 G. MBU Results Results from MBU will be available after the event. It will take time to get all results added so please be patient. We are not a merit badge factory and would like to ensure that each Scout completed the requirements before we create the reports. We will have all results recorded within 2 weeks after the event. At that time, you may go into sgcbsa.org to print an event record. Please check there before calling or ing. Thank you in advance for your understanding. H. Attendance It is the responsibility of the Scout to attend the merit badge classes assigned. If the Scout comes into a class late, after attendance has been taken, it is their responsibility to let the merit badge counselor know that they are in the class. If they do not inform the counselor, they will be considered absent for that class. I. Bring to Class All Scouts should bring the following items to each merit badge class: Paper and Pen/Pencil Merit Badge Workbooks Prerequisites Bottle of water IV. Uniforms Scouts are encouraged to wear the official field uniform for this event. V. Health, Safety, and First Aid Emergency Information 1. The MBU Health and Safety Staff will be available in the Copeland Center if the need arises. 2. Please have a BSA Health form on hand for each Scout attending the event. VI. Lost and Found The MBU Lost and Found is in the Copeland Center. VIII. Camping 1. This is an overnight camping event, come prepared!! 2. Scouts are required to camp with a TROOP. Any lone Scouts will be assigned to a unit. 3. Troops must provide 2-deep leadership. 4. Leave No Trace Camping will be practiced. 5. Campsite set up is the responsibility of the TROOP, we will not provide tents. 6. The Guide to Safe Scouting is strictly enforced as well as all other camp regulations. 7. Remember a Scout is clean; please treat camp as you would your personal property. Leave camp better than you found it.
6 VII. Conduct and Discipline As a participant of the Merit Badge University please remember to: 1. Guide to Safe Scouting policies apply and are enforced on Camp Property 2. Observe the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. 3. NO drugs or alcohol. 4. NO firearms. 5. NO youth or adults are to ride in the back of pickup trucks or trailers. 6. Park in designated parking lots only, DO NOT park in the camp sites. 7. NO open toe shoes or flip flops, except to or from the Shower. 8. NO walking around the camp barefoot. 9. NO running allowed in the camping area. 10. Always use the BUDDY SYSTEM, no exceptions. 11. NO flames in tents, open or otherwise. 12. Stay on Camp Patten property, DO NOT venture off. 13. DO NOT leave campfires unattended. 14. Leave what you find or see on the ground, DO NOT throw rocks, pines cones, sticks, etc. 15. When you get ready to leave, place trash in the dumpster across from Vulcan Pavilion. 16. Make sure bathrooms are clean and better than you found them. 17. Before you leave, pick up paper and other trash. LEAVE NO TRACE!! 18. Speed limit is 5 MPH throughout camp. 19. Remember this is a wooded area. Watch out for snakes and other wildlife. 20. Youth protection guidelines must be followed at all times. 21. Must be 18yrs of age and have a valid driver s license to operate any vehicle on camp. 22. ALL VISITORS MUST CHECK-IN & OUT AT THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING!!! 23. Wear official uniform when requested. 24. Attend the classes assigned. Do not wander around or into class areas as this may distract others from their class. 25. Be personally responsible for breakage, damage, or loss of property. 26. Be courteous to other Scouts, counselors, and staff. 27. Clean up classroom at the end of each session. 28. Clean up trash after eating all meals. 6
