6 USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC/JCC 201 Calendar year 2001 marked the 30th anniversary of active service for USS MOUNT WHITNEY, which was commissio January 16, Despite its age, the joint communications ship continues to prove its seawort year after year. In April, USS MOUNT WHITNEY underwent a successful inspection by the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) before participating in the first of two highly successful Joint Task Force Exercises (JTFEX). The second JTFEX took place August Both exercises saw MOUNT WHITNEY and the embarked Second Fleet staff get underway for two weeks, joining more than 24,000 U.S. joint service members as well as personnel and units from allied nations. The JTFEX replicated the emerging threats and operational challenges U.S. alitary forces may encounter around the world. The exercises provided the crew, staff and participating units with realistic, quality training to fully prepare our forces for joint operations when forward deployed. Participating forces used equipment and systems that incorporateid the latest advances in technology. While actively participating in these exercises, ZuNT WHITNEY1s crew also got the chance for some well- served liberty during three port visits in The firat came March in Nassau, Bahamas, followed by Mayport, Florida, May 11-13, and Halifax, Nova Scotia on Jwne e The reigns of command changed hands on July 17, wh n CAPT David W. Prothero relieved CAPT Martin E. Jenkins I11 to become MOUNT WHITNEY1s 1 8 Commanding Officer. Following a Systems and Engineering Material Assessment Team (SEMAT) visit in November, USS MOUNT WHITNEY closed out tde year in the shipyards at NORSHIPCO in Norfolk, Virginia ta make preparations for a very busy 2002.
