Great job and thanks again. We didn't do as well as expected. I had to close down the table at the BBQ Bash so we could cover the vacant openings due to the lack of volunteers. I hope next year will be better. We had a very poor placing at the Sea Food Festival also this year which accounted for the low donations. We need to keep Stuart, Wild Bill, Jim Ports, and by the way Jim with all his health problems battling cancer held down a post at the BBQ bash for several hrs. Thank you so much. Bill our Chaplain and all that are having health issues. Remember the Golf tournament is coming up at the end of the month also welcome home is still going on and we need people for Perry Point also. Please consider joining our Honor Guard. We can sure use the help in that area. 2 Page 2 All, The LASHUP Comments from the Sr. Vice Commandant The busy summer is winding down. I would like to first thank all of those who came out to help at the many events we had scheduled during the summer. The Detachment cannot function without its volunteers to keep it going. However, with the good there always seems to come the bad. In this case it comes in the lack of participation from almost 90% of the Detachment s members. I realize that it is hard for some members to come out for a specific event, but to never give any of your time to help out with at least one activity is discouraging to those of us who show up to most events. It would be ideal if every member could help out with events. This would help spread out the amount of time each person has to stand up for the Detachment and keep that 10% from burning out. This is your Detachment! Without participation and help from every member we will end up being a small group that sits around and wonders what happened. As you can see from the calendar below, there isn t that many activities upcoming. Please consider stepping up to the plate to help out your Fellow Marines, Corpsmen, Chaplains and Associate members in keeping our Detachment going. 3 Detachment 1198 Page 3 Comments from the Jr. Vice Commandant Recruiting is essential to any organization in order to keep it viable. The Department of Maryland has lost 67 members since June of last year, 19 of which were due to the death of the member. The fact that three of our members have reported to the Supreme Commandant in the last year means that we need to stay diligent with recruiting and maintaining new members. The Department of Maryland has asked all of the Maryland Detachments to form Membership Retention Teams (MRT). This team will be chaired by myself, along with two other members. It will be our responsibility to contact all detachment members at least once a quarter to check in and encourage participation in Detachment activities. The Department is hoping these teams will encourage members to come back into the fold and excite all members about local activities. 4 Page 4 The LASHUP Membership Report Per the June 30, 2014 National roster the Detachment Strength stands at 97 members with 7 of those members unpaid. 47 of the 97 are Permanent Life Members 11 of the 97 are Associate Members 3 are Dual Members RENEWALS: With the exception of Permanent Life Members each member must pay a $35 annual renewal fee each year. An annual membership runs twelve months from the month the member joined the detachment. Members who receive a renewal notice from National Headquarters should submit renewal fees to the detachment Paymaster, Dick Wischhusen at the next monthly meeting or mail a check to: To observe a Marine is inspirational. As they achieve the level of Eagle Scout we would like the opportunity to present them with a MCL Eagle Scout Good Citizenship Award certificate. The detachment is looking for members to present these certificates at upcoming Eagle Scout Courts of Honor. You continue to pay your normal registration fee at the time it is normally due. You must be a member in good standing and either the registered owner or co-owner of the vehicle. 7 Detachment 1198 Page 7 Military Order of the Devil Dogs Woof! Woof! First I want to congratulate new PDD Dave Franz! After many years as a DD and much cajoling he finally took the plunge in Charleston, WV! Great job, Dave! Also the Kennel donated $23,000 to the CAMC Women s and Children s Hospital in Charleston! Great job, Dogs!! My time as your Pound Keeper is coming to an end! I want to thank all of you dogs for your support in the past two years. It has been a lot of fun and I look forward to sitting among the masses and handing out bones for just being there instead of making mistakes in front of everyone! The next Growl will be on 6 September. We will be holding elections and installation for Pound offices. Make sure to let someone know if you would like to hold an office within the Pound, either elected or appointed. PDD Evie Remines Pound Keeper In the VFW Lounge Members of the League are welcome in the VFW lounge, but keep in mine that if you are NOT a VFW member you MUST sign the guest book upon entering the lounge! This goes for any friends or relatives that may accompany you. History Book Dave is always looking for photos from events and activities in which to include in the Detachment History Books. If you have any, please share them with him. 9 Detachment 1198 Page 9 Cell Phones for Soldiers We have supported our deployed troops by collecting 19 phones in the past month. To date that is over cell phones. These phones are sent to a collection point and exchanged for telephone calling cards which are sent to troops overseas. This enables them to call family and friends at no cost to them. 10 Page 10 The LASHUP VFW Post 8672 Dedicates New Pavilion to Purple Heart Recipients On 2 August, the VFW held an all day event to dedicate its newly completed pavilion to Purple Heart Recipients. Among those honored was Former Detachment Commandant, Don Benson. Don s story was shared with the crowd along with six other VFW Post Members, three of which received their plaques post mortem by their widows. This was a somber and joyous day as the pavilion was packed to capacity to celebrate.

11 Detachment 1198 Page 11 MCL Member Pens Another Book Dick Ellwood, a member of the detachment has written his third book. This time, he has shifted away from police work and crime to write a children s book. Dick and his wife Sharon, have eight grandchildren, so the pressure was on for the children s book. The book is titled, The Secret Zoo and was released in mid-august The book is about a group of young kids who grow up in the inner city. Next to the homes where they live is a zoo. The fathers of the children built a tree house that the kids can see into the zoo when they are in the tree house. The story follows the kids as they plan on entering the zoo after closing hours. They know that the zookeeper, a quirky character named Captain Corky has special abilities that allow him to talk to the animals. The story should appeal to any youngsters who have a fascination with a zoo. The dialogue and beautiful color illustrations make you feel like you are along on the adventure with the children. Dick has had success with his previous two books, Cop Stories-The Few, The Proud, The Ugly and Charm City s Blue Justice. He however, takes great pride in this new book and he has depicted his eight grandchildren as characters in the book. 12 Page 12 The LASHUP Department of Maryland News The next Department meeting and Maryland Pack Growl will be held on 27 September in Cumberland, MD. It will be hosted by the Mountain Marines Detachment 1071 at the Cumberland Outdoor Club - 31 Thomas Street. The Mountainside Marines Detachment has arranged to have a block of hotel rooms set aside for any Marine Corps League member staying either Friday or Saturday night or both nights. To reserve your room call The Marriott at The Marriott is located at 21 North Wineow Street, Cumberland. Hope to see you there! Jarrettsville Young Marines The Young Marines have been very busy lately as they were a force in getting the Heroes' Brick walkway prepared for the opening of the new pavilion. They also played an instrumental part in the dedication of the pavilion to Purple Heart Recipients by present the Colors and Charter during the ceremony. If that wasn t enough, three of my hard-chargers help with the food preparation and clean up at the end of the festivities. 13 Detachment 1198 Page 13 Toys for Tots Requests for toys are starting to come in already! The conference is in September and then it will be full speed ahead. Don t forget about the Rockin Around the Jukebox show with The Cruisers on 27 September from 7:00-11:00 p.m. at the VFW. Admission to get in is $15 with a new toy or $20 without a toy. A full page ad costs $40, half page $25 and a business card ad is only $15. All ads will run for one year. The ads help offset the cost of publication and postage for the newsletter. A Marine is a Marine. I set that policy two weeks ago - there s not such thing as a former Marine. You re a Marine, just in a different uniform and you re in a different phase of life. But you ll always be a Marine because you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico. There s no such thing as a former Marine. -General James F.
