Health & Wellness Program Course Description: Health and Wellness is an official part of the Air Force Junior ROTC program and serves as PE credit in the state of Texas. The goal of the program is to enable each student in achieving a national physical fitness standard based on age and sex. The wellness portion can be conducted with minimal space and with minimal climate dependency (e.g. the 1-mile run). The exercises develop all muscle groups and provide sufficient anaerobic and aerobic intensity. They require no equipment and use only body weight and common objects (e.g. chairs). Course Objectives: To motivate JROTC cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives. Course Materials: 1. The issued Air Force PT Uniform (AFPTU) consists of the AFJROTC issued shirt and athletic shorts and cadet supplied athletic shoes. 2. TX Cadet Handbook Assignments: 1. Mondays are designated Health & Wellness days. 2. Cadets will perform specific exercises or play instructor designed team activities. 3. Wellness education will be substituted on unsafe weather days as deemed by the SASI/ASI Community Service Requirements Course Description: Community service activities serve as the foundational component of building better citizens, focused on serving their community and nation. One of the ways we will achieve such a mindset is to get cadets involved in what s going on right in their own backyard. By giving cadets an opportunity to serve in their community we hope to motivate them to embody a service before self mindset. For School Year 2017/18, TX has partnered with Gizmo s Gift, Soldier s Angels, and a yet to be determined cadet corps selected community service project. Generally, while performing community service projects cadets will wear either the AFJROTC uniform or the AFJROTC polo shirt as designated by either the SASI or ASI.
4 Course Objectives: To motivate JROTC cadets to become more involved in the activities and well-being of their community by promoting activities outside the classroom. Grading: The AS 400 portion of the ROTC 4 course will be jointly graded by the SASI and ASI and the LE portion will be graded by the SASI. Cadet Health & Wellness will be evaluated by the ASI and at times, the SASI. Cadets are required to participate in all aspects of the ROTC 4 course which includes, but is not limited to, classroom participation, active participation in health and wellness activities, completion of drill and ceremonies, proper wear of issued uniforms as designated, and community service hours. Additionally, there will be a few mandatory events that will occur outside of traditional school hours. Graded Event Weight Quizzes, tests, drill, projects 50% Health and Wellness 20% Uniform Wear 20% Community Service 10% Academics Grading: Cadets are expected to be prepared for class and will be routinely evaluated through in class activities which may include; quick write assessments and quizzes. Additionally, students will be evaluated through section tests, oral presentations, and overall participation. Our goal is to achieve mastery of the evaluated topics and will allow any student to retake a test within 2-weeks of receiving their grade and the completion of re-teaching the topic area(s). Drill evaluations: Year End of Fall Semester End of Spring Semester AS 1 Able to execute static commands and memorization of the 30-step drill sequence 2 cadet AS 2 Able to command all static drill movements and ability to lead the 30-step drill sequence AS 3 Ability to teach and evaluate 30-step drill sequence AS 4 Effectively design and execute a change of command and semester awards/promotion ceremony. Effectively plan and lead the corps in community engagement parades Ability to effectively perform the 30-step drill sequence under the guidance of an AS Effectively lead a flight formation through the 30-step drill sequence without leaving the drill area Effectively teach and evaluate 30-step drill sequence Effectively design and execute a change of command, corps parade, and semester awards/promotion ceremony Uniform wear evaluations (normally on Wednesday): Properly wearing of the issued AFJROTC uniform is a key component in the development of personal accountability and discipline. Students are expected to be in uniform throughout the
5 school day on designated uniform days. Exceptions may be granted for classes participating in activities that may cause permanent damage to the uniform. Examples of such activities are; painting in art class, conducting combat arms training in theater. Additionally, students participating in athletics are to change out of their uniform and dress in appropriate clothing for that class period. Uniform inspections will be conducted at the beginning of class on designated uniform days by the cadet flight commander or cadet flight sergeant under the supervision of the SASI or ASI. Specific grading criteria is outlined in the TX Cadet Corps Guide. Students not wearing their uniform on the designated day will receive a zero for that event. With prior written approval of the SASI/ASI, students may be allowed to wear their uniform on a different day during week and receive full credit for their inspection. Students that fail to coordinate with the SASI/ASI will be allowed to make up the uniform inspection but will docked points for failing to follow guidelines. As senior cadets, the expectation is for the uniform to be worn correctly 100% of the time. Final determination of proper uniform wear and grooming standards are the responsibility of the SASI and ASI and will not be debated. Clarification of standards will be provided upon request. Note: If a cadet has a back to back repeat major discrepancy, i.e. hair not in regulations, the cadet will receive a failing grade for the second inspection for failing to correct a known discrepancy with mandatory personal appearance and grooming standards. Health and Wellness Grading: Cadets are expected to participate in each H&W day (generally Monday) and are required to wear the issued PT uniform and appropriate athletic shoes. Weekly grade. Medical excuses: Participate and dressed in issued PT uniform 100% Participates but fails to dress in PT uniform 70% Does not participate but is dressed in PT uniform 50% Does not participate and not dressed in issued PT Uniform 0% Dressed in PT Uniform with medical excuse 100% PE participation grade is based on following guidance and participation. Cadets that receive a failing grade can, 70% within the same week, improve their grade during either tutoring periods or WIN 1. Students will receive a grade of 100% if dressed in PT uniform and are able to partially participate in PT activities by supporting the instructors as a time keeper, a recorder of scores, or in other ways within the cadet s participation limits. 2. If the cadet is unable to dress and support the instructors, they will receive a grade of excused for that class. Note: At the discretion of the SASI, prolonged non-participation may lead to removal from the JROTC program.
6 Community Service Grading: Cadets are expected to complete a minimum of number of service hours, based on their AS year, per semester. The SASI reserves the right to excuse any cadet, with a legitimate excuse, from participation in community service activities. Students may obtain 20 service hours outside of AFJROTC, as long as they are verified by a legitimate entity managing the community service event. Hours are not cumulative. Cadets must obtain a minimum of 50% of required service hours during each 9-week reporting period. The minimum required hours per AS year are: AS Year AS 1 AS 2 AS 3 AS 4 Hours/Semester
