3 Phase 1- Prevention / Mitigation Mitigation... encourages long-term reduction of hazard vulnerability. -- FEMA, 2002 Mitigation/Prevention addresses what schools can do to reduce exposure to risks and hazards and lessen the potential impact of an emergency situation. Mitigation efforts can occur both before and after emergencies or disasters. 3

4 Facilities / Mitigation Mitigation assesses and addresses the safety and integrity of the following types of hazards to minimize or prevent adverse impacts: Examples of securing nonstructural hazards would be using straps, latches, Velcro, brackets, are some of the ways to secure a wide range of objects to avoid loss, damage and injury during an earthquake. 5 Facilities Mitigation / Security SECURITY - functioning locks, controlled access to the school, metal detectors 5

6 Physical Threat Assessments Threat assessment considers potential hazards in school neighborhood such as high voltage power lines; facilities containing toxic or chemically reactive materials; transportation routes of trucks and trains carrying hazardous materials; underground gas and oil pipelines and tanks. 6

7 School Environment Determine who is responsible for overseeing violence prevention strategies in the school, and disseminate information to staff regarding the early detection of potentially dangerous behaviors. 7

33 Student / Parent reunification Parent Reunification Post Each School has a preplanned student / parent reunification plan. At the beginning of each school year; parents fill out Emergency Contact information for each of their children. The students will be released to the people listed on the emergency contact card. Parents / other contacts must have photo identification with them in order to retrieve their student. 33

35 Phase 4 - Recovery Recovery refers to the follow-up measures taken after a disaster to return the affected school site or district to normal operating conditions Repairing or rebuilding damaged utilities and infrastructure Re-establishing a sense of emotional safety and returning to the learning environment as quickly as possible after a crisis 35
