1 1 Central Station Newsletter San Francisco Police Depar t ment Inside this issue: Captain Paul Yep s Message Wednesday, May 3, 2017 Captain s Message 1-2 Pictures 3-5 Weekly Update 6-13 Officer of the Month 14 Press Releases/Events/ Info 15 Career Opportunities 16 Resource Information 17 Burglary as defined in California Penal Code section 459 states, Every person who enters any house, room, apartment, shop, warehouse, store with intent to commit grand or petit larceny or any other felony is guilty of burglary. The officers of are more determined and eager than ever to help prevent burglaries and to arrest any and all suspects. How can you help? Here are three general tips I encourage everyone to implement to prevent and limit burglaries in our District. First, secure your home and/or business. Check all of your doors and windows and their locking mechanisms. Reinforce or upgrade your locks and install a deadbolt. Consider installing solid and kick-proof doors and reinforced glass windows. Suspects generally go for the easier targets, such as open doors and windows, or one s that have locking mechanisms that can be easily defeated. Alarm systems and lighting are also great deterrents. Second, if possible, install a video surveillance system. Technology has made high resolution video cameras with simplified installation more affordable than ever. Video footage and photographs are essential for identifying suspects, assisting investigations and ultimately, successful criminal prosecution. I cannot emphasize how important quality video footage has become and will be for our future law enforcement efforts. Finally, start or join a SAFE Neighborhood Watch group for your block or business corridor. Neighborhood Watch groups are a perfect way to problem-solve and to help prevent crime. Captain Paul Yep Commanding Officer Central Station Next Community Meeting: Monday, May 8, :00p.m.-7:00p.m. Grace Cathedral 1100 California Thank you for subscribing to our Newsletter! Please follow us on Continues on page 2
2 2 Page 2 Continued from page 1 Neighborhood Watch strategies include analyzing and forming personal and home safety plans, and creating block maps and communication trees to ensure timely, correct information sharing. Together, neighbors can effectively observe and report suspicious activities to the police. SAFE Neighborhood Watch provides both the community and the police with more updated, focused and effective crime observation, information and prevention. Both the community and the police together form an ongoing partnership for effective crime prevention and public safety for your neighborhood. Start your SAFE Neighborhood Watch group today! Gather a few of your immediate neighbors Contact SAFE for a planning meeting to identify priorities and next steps Invite your neighbors to the first Neighborhood Watch meeting Create your action plan with SAFE and other resources SAFE will help you learn about crime prevention and safety Hold monthly meetings with SAFE and your neighbors until you are an official SAFE Neighborhood Watch group! 12 12 Page 12 Incidents of Note Robbery with Gun On April 23, 2017 at approximately 11:59PM, officers from San Francisco Police Department s Central Station responded to the 1700 block of Stockton Street on a report of an armed robbery. While en-route to the call, dispatchers at the Department of Emergency Management broadcast descriptions of the suspects and getaway vehicle. Upon arrival at the scene, officers located the victims, a 28 year-old male, Fresno resident and a 25 year-old female, San Francisco resident. The victims told officers the following: While walking westbound on Filbert Street towards Stockton Street, a group of males exited an SUV and surrounded them. One of the suspects produced a handgun and demanded both victims property. The victims were robbed of their property and suspects fled to a waiting SUV. Officers searching the area located and stopped an SUV matching the suspect vehicle description near Clay Street and Sansome Street. The victims were taken to the scene where they identified the vehicle and suspects involved in the robbery. The driver, Jacob Zamecnick, 20, from Vacaville and the passengers, Rodney Snell, 19, from Vacaville and Jaylen Douglas, 18, from Modesto were placed under arrest and booked at the San Francisco County Jail for the following charges: carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony, possession of stolen property, robbery and conspiracy. Zamenick was also booked for driving with a suspended license. Three of the other subjects involved were juveniles. The juveniles, a 17 year-old male, a 17 year -old female and a 15 year-old male, all from Vacaville, were placed under arrest and booked at the Juvenile Justice Center for the following charges: carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony, possession of stolen property, robbery, conspiracy and minor in possession of a concealable firearm. The 15 year-old male was also booked on assault for a person with force likely to produce great bodily injury after being identified as a suspect in the Richmond and Park District incidents. Several of the other suspects were also linked to the following incidents: April 23, :00pm 4th Ave and Cabrillo St Robbery with a Gun April 23, :19pm 4th Ave and Cabrillo St Attempt Robbery w/ Force April 23, :30pm 21st Ave and Cabrillo St Robbery with a Gun A firearm and multiple items belonging to victims were recovered from the vehicle.
13 13 Page 13 Auto Theft 225 Bay Street 04/28/17, 19:47 Plain Clothes Officers working in the area noticed a suspicious vehicle with two occupants. This vehicle stopped several times to park in different areas often sitting there for just a few minutes before taking off again. Realizing that this behavior was quite suspicious the officers continued to watch the vehicle. Eventually the suspect exited his vehicle and within a short amount of time broke the window of a vehicle grabbing several bags of luggage. Officers were able to recover the stolen luggage as the suspect fled the area and returned it the original owners.
