We had the joy of administering their oaths and pinning them with their rosettes during the Miles Hollowell grave marking ceremony on the 19th. And all three participated in the ceremony! You will find information about their Patriot ancestors on pages 2-4 of this newsletter. Enjoy these fascinating minibiographies! 2 LEONARD BOWERS - MARYLAND PATRIOT ANCESTOR OF TRAVIS MCCLOUD Leonard Bowers was born in the fall of He was a resident of Hagerstown, Maryland when he enlisted in the spring of 1778 in the 6th Maryland Regiment for a commitment of three years under Colonel Otto H. Williams. Shortly after enlistment he was marched to Valley Forge, where Washington had held his infamous winter encampment during the previous winter. The unit was rapidly marched to Monmouth, New Jersey, where Bowers fought in the Battle of Monmouth on June 228, After that battle, his unit was marched to White Plains, New York, then later to Basking, New Jersey, where they entered into winter quarters. The unit remained in the New York-New Jersey region throughout 1779 with no significant engagements. They entered winter quarters near Morristown, New Jersey, during the winter of In the spring of 1780 the regiment was marched to Trenton, then to Burlington, New Jersey, where the men were placed on ships and taken down the Delaware River, past Philadelphia, to Middletown, Delaware. The regiment marched overland through Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina until they were encamped just twelve miles from Camden, South Carolina, when they joined the army of General Horatio Gates and engaged the British in the Battle of Camden on August 16, The Patriot forces lost this battle, and Pvt. Bowers was captured by the British, but soon liberated by Patriot forces. He rejoined his unit and remained along the border of North and South Carolina. General Nathaniel Green assumed command of the American forces on December 2, Shortly after, Bowers regiment engaged in the Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781, and soundly defeated the British. Afterward, his regiment marched through Morganton and Salisbury, North Carolina, to Guilford Courthouse, where they entered Bowers final battle on March 15, He was discharged and returned home shortly after that battle. Overall, Bowers was involved in the following major engagements: Monmouth, New Jersey Camden, South Carolina Cowpens, South Carolina Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina After the war, he married Rebecca Nave on August 2, The couple settled in Carter County in the mountains of East Tennessee. He received a pension for his service in the amount of $80 a month on July 2, Bowers died in Carter County on October 5, PAGE 2

3 ROBERT MONTGOMERY - RHODE ISLAND PATRIOT ANCESTOR OF JERRY BURLINGAME Robert Montgomery was born January 8, 1740, in Voluntown, Connecticut. He was a gentleman and a family man in Voluntown. He and his wife, Hannah, had a large family and many responsibilities at home. But when called up for militia duty, he was prepared to answer the call. However, his young son, Josiah, volunteered to serve in his place. Ultimately, Robert Montgomery made an almost unthinkable contribution to the Patriot cause he provided his son as a substitute for active service. Thankfully, Josiah Montgomery survived the war and went on to claim a pension in his later years. Hannah Montgomery died in Connecticut in After her passing, Robert relocated with other members of his family to Shaftsbury, Vermont. He died there on May 17, Robert Montgomery s daughter, Sarah, married Thomas Burlingame, the son of Nathan Burlingame, who was also a Patriot, having served in the Connecticut Militia. PAGE 3

4 JOHN GEORGE OVERMEYER - PENNSYLVANIA PATRIOT ANCESTOR OF TONY DOTHSUK Captain John George Overmyer came to America in 1751 on the ship "Brothers." Overmyer served in the French and Indian War and later was a Colonial Militia Captain in the Revolutionary War. Assigned to Colonel Philip Cole's 4th Battalion of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania formed in Captain John Geo. Overmeier, Sixth Company was attached to Colonel James Potter's 2nd Battalion under Lt. Col. James Murray. Captain Overmyer discharged varied and arduous duties at times at the head of a company of men as Captain, leading them to battle and pursuit of the enemy, at other times marching in the ranks and doing battle under other officers. Commissioned for local frontier defense, sometimes for special campaigns, and still others for periods in support of the Continental Army and General John Sullivan. In 1805 Captain Overmyer died and was buried at Dry Run Cemetery, former Northumberland (now Union) Co. that was on the banks of Penn's Creek at Switzer's Run. Captain Overmyer had 4 children with Eva (Maria Magdalena) Rosenbaum who died at the sixth year of there marriage. He had then married (Anna) Barbara Vogt (Foucht) and had 11 more by the time of the Revolutionary War. His two eldest sons also served in the Revolutionary War while his youngest sons later served in the War of PAGE 4

5 NEWSLETTER OF THE COL. STEPHEN TRIGG CHAPTER - SAR MAY 2014 VETERANS HONORED Incoming member Dylan Lancaster (left) recently visited with veteran Jerry Swinford (right) in Cadiz. Mr. Swinford is a former United States Marine, and served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion of the 7th Marines in the Republic of Vietnam from 1966 to Dylan presented him with a Veteran s Appreciation Certificate and Veteran s Challenge Medal. Compatriot Glenn Greenfield (left) recently presented a Veteran s Appreciation Certificate and Veterans s Challenge Medal to Ray Aquino (right) of Cadiz. Ray is a retired veteran of the U.S. Army, serving twenty years from 1979 to He served in combat in the Grenada Invasion, Panama Invasion, and Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. Ray has at least two patriots in his family tree, and is a candidate for membership in SAR. If you see him, encourage him to join! TAX DEDUCTIBLE? YOU BET!! Cash is mighty handy. We can do a lot more if we have a lot more. Maybe you could consider giving above and beyond your regular dues to the work of our chapter! 6 VETERANS HONORED (l to r) Compatriot Jerry Burlingame, Veteran Tim Wagoner, Veteran Mac Barnes, Compatriot Glenn Greenfield Compatriots Jerry Burlingame and Glenn Greenfield recently presented Veteran s Appreciation Certificates and Challenge Medals to U.S. Army veterans Tim Wagoner and Mac Barnes. Mr. Wagoner was a WO-2 Helicopter Pilot/Aviator for six years, and continues to fly today in civilian aviation. He also operates his own farm. Mr. Barnes is a retired First Sergeant, having served his full twenty years in the Army. After his discharged, he continued his military career as a private contractor/operator and served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He now works in manufacturing. Both men are very involved in their church, Crossroads Fellowship in Cadiz. Chapter President Geoff Baggett presented the Veteran s Appreciation Certificate and Challenge coin to Brian Davis of Cadiz. Brian is an engineer at Transcraft Corporation. Brian served in the United States Air Force from 1987 until His job specialty was Avionics. When he left the service he was a Staff Sergeant (E-5). POSTHUMOUS AWARD William B. He has been active in our community events, was one of the first Compatriots to complete his uniform, and has recruited his sons to pursue their memberships! Thank you for your service, Travis!
