2 AGS by the Numbers: 1,610 people attended public events o Averaged 120 at the American Grand Strategy Lecture Series o Averaged 250 at the Von der Heyden Fellows Program Endowed Lecture Series o Averaged 1100 at the Ambassador Dave and Kay Phillips Family International Lecture series 240 students met in small group sessions with distinguished visitors 3 lectures in the American Grand Strategy lecture series 5 endowed lectures organized by AGS 4 experiential education opportunities o 1 International Strategic Crisis Negotiations Exercise: The South Caucuses (Organized by the U.S. Army War College) o 1 Virtual Staff Ride: OPERATION ANACONDA (Run by the American Enterprise Institute. 7 AGS Summer Fellows Program (Summer 2013) 1) Adrienne Harreveld, Intern at the U.S. Department of State (Press Office, Paris) My job description includes interviews, preparation of policy guidance documents, researching the French media looking for emerging trends in its economic, political, and cultural coverage, participating in US Government VIP visits, and managing the site s social media. The US State Department and its embassies are crucial components of America s Grand Strategy. Not only are they important resources for our citizens abroad, but also they help us to strengthen diplomatic ties and alliances around the world. France has always been an important ally to the United States and I am excited to work in our nation s oldest diplomatic mission. By working in the Press Office and being constantly emerged in French media, I will be able to better learn international perceptions of current affairs and perceptions of the United States. I hope to work for the State Department after graduation so there is no better internship suited to my career goals. 2) Jordan Pearson, Senate Foreign Relations Committee I am in position to gain enormously from this internship, progressing towards my professional goals, and am uniquely qualified for the position. My extended international experience has given me a more mature and broader worldview than many of my peers, as well as language skills and a cultural awareness that will be invaluable in future foreign policy, considering North Korea s recent nuclear tests and the Obama administration s Asia Pivot. This internship will be an opportunity for me to expand the concepts I have learned through AGS events and give me current experiences in US foreign policy that I will contribute to the Duke AGS community. 3) Lawrence Nemeh, Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (Working in Palestinian Refugee Camp) CAMES will provide great foundational insight toward my interests in US-Arab diplomacy. On a personal level, I will ably understand effective US-Arab diplomacy once I garner a stronger understanding of Arabs stories. Forging relationships with refugee families from Palestine, Syria and Iraq will offer exceptional insights into varying living conditions throughout the region. I plan on conducting interviews with at least 30 different refugees to learn about their previous living conditions, general opinions of the US and their opinion regarding the roles of US and other rising nations to intervene in cases of human rights abuses abroad. On an academic level, furthering my study of the Arabic language is absolutely crucial to pursuing my passions for Foreign Service in the region.
